Ml
A Safe Christmas Shop
In a local paper's "3sTote and Comment" column
recently reference was made to an immense
water tank that shut off the view from the win
dows of their editorial rooms of the snow-capped
Mount Hood. That big water tank forms the
Spex of our new five-story steel fireproof store
structure, known as the big Sixth-street Annex.
It holds 15,000 gallons of water that could be
poured through the automatic fire-sprinklers
that form a network on the ceilings over every
floor throughout the three great buildings that
go to make up Ihis, Portland's largest store, and
an instant- would suffice for extinguishing any
inaiffient blaze that might ever get a start in
these -stores. Again, not only is our building of
steel, but also of fireproof cement that you
couldn't set on fire any more than you could the
Pacific Ocean. There's not an inflammable ma
terial in all its construction. Great fire-doors of
heavy iron close at the touch of a button, shut
ting off one building from the other; and ele
vators of a hundred capacity run every minute
from top to ground floors. Now you see why
this building was so long in reaching completion
There's mighty detail in its construction de
tail and construction that have made it the only

during the congestion incident to Christmas

the schoolrooms; and it's "Liberty Hall," too.
Let them come as often and stay as long as they
like, and drink in to its fullness the wonderful
immensity of the surpassing holiday displays.
Be SURE that HERE they're SAFE!

Ekjnirk Ssirk Elected Governor of Provinces of Toy land and Dollville
HE ASSUMED OFFICE MONDAY HIS TERM LASTS UNTIL

He'll have some wonderful proclamations to make ere

where he has been engaged for years In fashioning toys and
games, and beautiful dolls and other things or all the chil
dren of Christendom, over whom he rules beloved and su-
fireme. He's a wonderful fellow this Ssirk. He's awful busy
ust now, but later on he'll come .out and talk to the chil
dren and the grown folk, too. We like him so well we've
decided to glvo him entire charge of the whole store until
the doors close on Christmas Eve. when he'll hie himself
over the mountains ana away wiinout leaving nis aaaress.
Until then he'll have power of attorney, as It were, to conduct the firm's business. What to buy for the chil
dren Is a matter he solves this way: "Get simple things." Remembering the story of the Empress of Ger
many, who found one of her royal babies surrounded by costly toys, but not amused by them. Take them
away!" she commanded. "What does he want of such things? Bring me the cheapest playthings you can

One of the largest, leading .makers of "Women s House "Wrappers approached our New York buyer
about two weeks ago with a proposition to turn over his entire remaining stock for cash at
just a fraction of its actual cost to him; 'twas his housecleaning time just before stock
taking. We are big year-'round customers, and he showed his appreciation or our trade by
bringing us this basket of plums as a complimentary dessert after the year's banquet. They
hit us at a bad time, however, for tha suit stores are all amuss from the workmen. Under or
dinary circumstances we might sort and -grade these wrappers to sell at three or four prices,
according to quality, but we've neither time or room for it now, so place them all, direct from
their packing cases, on a big table near the old elevator on second floor. Values ranging up
from L7o to $3.00 all at once price for today only, 89.
The wrappers are in flannelette and pretty percale materials, in floral, and conventional dotted
and striped patterns of interwoven colorings, embracing grays, blues from navy to cadet, reds,
blacks and "whites, etc. Some have deep flourices, yoke trimmings, Bishop sleeves and wide col
