10 THE MOENUN0 OREGONIAS, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2S, 1904. DX. JCLOUGICOTS. SERVICE. What He Did for the Early Oregon Ptaieers. Victoria (B. C.) Colonist. Mr. George Himes, assistant secretary -Oregon Historical Society, In a letter to The Oregonlan of Portland, advocates strongly the doing of something to per petuate the name of Dr. John McLough lin in Oregon. Dr. Mclxmghlln was the first representative of the Hudson's Bay Company on the Pacific Coast, -with headquarters at Fort Vancouver, on the Columbia River, and his Jurisdiction ex tended throughout a vast territora: known as the "Western department, -OTaeh In cluded practically the whole of the Pa cific slope north of Mexican territory, exclusive- of Alaska. Kls successor was Sir James Douglas. Owing to what was really a quarrel between Mclaughlin and the Hudson's Bay Company, he sev ered his connection, remained on the American side after the boundary ques tion was settled and founded Oregon City, some 12 miles from the present City of Portland. He was in rather an unfortunate position for some time. By the Hudson's Bay Company he "was re garded as too friendly to the United States settlers coming Into Oregon, and by the settlers he was regarded with suspicion on account of his relations with the Hud son's Bay Company, although he befriend ed them as no other man ever did. In fact, after the settlement of the boundary question "he had difficulty In retaining his title to real estate, which had been at tacked by speculative settlers. By and by, however, he came to have very friend ly relations with the people over there, and he is now most frequently referred to as "the Father of Oregon." Mr. Himes wants the name of "Mount Pit," or "Pitt," in Southern Oregon, changed to Mount McLoughlin. He cites a great many authorities to show that Mount Pitt was originally known as "Mount McLoughlin," and that It was applied four times to that mountain be fore 1S48, the first date the name "Pitt" "was used. On old maps altogether, up until 18C6, it was used seven times to five times as against "Pitt." Mr. Himes does not know how the name "Pitt" came to "be used, and .asks for enlighten ment. It Is interesting, because we have a Pitt River in British Columbia, a trib utary of the Fraser. He says: "My understanding of the word is that PIf is the proper spelling for 'Pit River, or Pit River Indians,' the name originat ing on account of the custom of the In dians along the river had of digging pits about six feet deep to entrap game," 'and ho quotes his authority for the same. "We wonder if our Pitt River was named for a similar reason, or was It named after Pitt, the great statesman? However, to return to the original sub ject, it seems very proper that one who has figured so conspicuously In the early annals of Oregon should have his name perpetuated In some conspicuous way In that state, and if "Mount Pit" has been substituted for "Mount McLoughlin," the United States geographical authorities should do justice to the memory of one who certainly was the best friend the early settlers of Oregon ever had, by re storing it to its former name. In truth, it is even quite certain that the United States owes Oregon to the assistance of Dr. McLoughlin to the early pioneers who came over the mountains and who would otherwise have starved or been slaught ered by the Indians. A Definition. New York Evening Sun. Chancery Lane, London, Is occupied al most entirely by lawyers and the trades men who cater to their needs. During the "long vacation" there is hardly any traffic upon it. A gentleman riding on a 'bus remarked upon this to the driver JYes, sir." he replied; "it's 'ell with the" fire out."
