The proposed $10,000 cable suspension bridge across the Cowlitz River, between Kelso and Catlin, formed the subject of a conference yesterday in the offlce or Major William a Langfltt, United States Engineer Corps, and Captain Amos A. Fries, of the same department, presiaea. About one dozen people were present, representing the Kelso Bridge Company, the citizens of Kelso and Catlin, and vari ous steamboat interests. Very little oppo sition was reported against the bridge. Captain S. V. Short, of the Oregon Lum ber Company, wrote: "The proposed draw is not wide enough. It should not be less than 123 feet In the clear, as there is heavy logging business transacted along the river, and the boats must have room enough to work. There is no neea ior bridge at Kelso. There ought. Instead, to be a ferry." H. E. McKenney, secretary of the Kelso Bridge Company, said In part: "We pro pose to build a wagon bridge 500 feet In length, with an SO-foot draw, the highest part of the bridge measuring SO feet from the water. The main span win De svj feet long, and we will place the draw near the Kelso side, as the channel Is there. Wo arc not merely In the proposition to make money or profit. Our company Is made up of people who reside in the vicin ity, representing a population of about 300t people, and only two of our citizens re fused to sign the petition for permission to erect the bridge. A ferry would not be suitable, on account of low water. Ag ricultural and lumber Interests make a bridge necessary between the two towns." Speeches favoring the bridge were also heard from Captain E. "W. Spencer, J. N. Ayres, William Lyons, F. B. Jones and A- H. Morrill. To the same effect, letters were read from the Columbia & Cowlitz River Steamboat Company, Shaver Trans portation Company. Gentlemen and Friends: Your favor of the 8th is be fore us, and in reply beg to say that we carried off the honors and received the highest awards of any corset manufacturer who exhibited at St. Louis. The honors conferred upon us" came to us without wining or dining any of the jury. This makes 13 medals that we have received at various times from bronze to ruAweLOjj's. gold. Yours very truly, Nuaswo MESfuti president. We are selling agents for this celebrated -corset, and Mil and fit every one with our positive guarantee. The Bridgeport Evening Post, October 28, 1904, commenting on the award, says: The famous house of George C. Batcheller & Cov successor to Langdon, Batcheller & Co., the oldest corset manufacturers in the United States, with branches in London, Chicago and San Francisco, and whose goods are world renowned, have been successful in obtaining the gold medal and grand prize for their cele brated Thomson's Glove Fitting Corsets and "Waists. This high mark of award by the jury only corroborates what has been so universal in all the great exhibitions of the world, London, Paris, Centennial, New Orleans, Cotton Centennial, Nashville, and the American Mechanics' Fair at New York. This is a matter of special congratulation for the reason that ony one gold medal is given, while grand prizes are numerous. The firm of Batcheller & Co. has thus added to Bridgeport's fame and import ance. Anticipating the result of the corset exhibits at St. Louis, being fully aware there was no otter corset manufactured tke peer of the Thomson Corset, we purchased heavily of all tke latest 1&4-5 models.
