Speculative Operations la Grain Somewhat
Sestricted.
SAN FRANCISCO. Nov. 25. Special.) Lo
cal speculative operations in grain were of re
stricted volume. Wheat fen oft soon after the
opening, but strengthened later, the May- op
tion being chiefly is demand. . Barley. was'
steady, but lacked animation. O&is 'were
quieter and easier. Bran and rolled barley
were firm. Dry .weather talk, waa frequent;
and served to prevent any marked weakness
in cereals and kindred products. Rain is bad-
ly needed in the South, but the Northern andJ
Central sections can ao witnout it several
weeks- before the situation becomes serious.
Hay dealers assert that. If the preeeat dry
weather continues well Into December, the hay
market will advance materially. Los Angeles
continues to draw heavily en the North for
hay. , .

Hlmcs letter and your editorial Indorsement
of the plan to change the name of Mount Pit
to Mount McLoughlin have been read with a
great deal of pleasure. As expressed to me
by Mr. Gannett, of the Board on Geographic
Names, In .a letter recently received, "It Is
up to the people of Oregon to move In the
matter." The decision of the board at present
is "Pit," but If good reasons can be shown
for a change, backed up by a desire of the
people for such change. It will be made. Mr.
jumesWfa the best of reasons, but we need
niage and Intelligent action. First, let us quit
using Pit. Let The Oregonlan set the example.
supported by the press) of the state and writers

call it McLoughlin. without parenthesis or
other explanation. .Let the Legislature take
Kup the matter and officially declare the name
to be McLoughlin, then let the Oregon. His-
