12? THE MORNING OKEGONIAN, THTJBSDAY, NOVEMBER- 24, 3904. IN THE QTY'S TROUBLE SHOP A QxieMlfm. ef KeliKleii Spcech les Frank's Close Call The Fate of a Flirt Bachelor BUI's TbamkKglrlaff Treat. MKS. MABSEIXO and her husband were probing complex theologi cal problems. Mr. Marcello argued from a strictly sectarian standpoint, contending that there is but one path to salvation. 2Irs. Marcello took the opposite view that the broad basic principles of Chris tianity characterize each and every worthy sect and accordingly sects are mere incidental Institutions emanating from different interpretations ot Chris tianity. Marcello scoffed her Ideas, telling her he objected to such nonsense. He added that should she ever dare at tend any church than the particular one to which they happen to belong he would disown her. Mrs. Marcello lost her temper and said it would bring a consuming Joy. into her life if he would effect the threatened desertion without delay. In fact she seized him by the collar of the coat and assisted him towards the door, saying she was going to go to every church in town next Sunday. Mr. Marcello thereupon announced he would decorate her face in such man ner that she could not attend any church whatsoever. H would save her from her folly, ho declared, even if he had to do so through the medium of the jamily ax. Just where the argument would have ended had it not been Interrupted Is hard to telL But it happened that lit tle Johnny Marcello, aged 5, had be oome alarmed and called upon neigh bors to arbitrate. The neighbors In t;urn invited the police department to serve as a committee on arbitration. The result was that Marcello was made a martyr to his beliefs a few moments after he had knocked his wife down and strangled her severely. Just to Impress it upon Mr. Marcello that this is a day of free religious thought Judge Hogue reduced the fel low's bank account $50 and added the amount to the city treasury. JOB STEPONISH seemed to be a very badly abused man. He had been arrested for fighting with Frank Dottmaun, whereas it seemed Frank alone should have been arrested. "When the pair was brought Into the trouble shop Joe quickly showed he was not to blame. "This man attacked me with a knife and beat me nearly to death," said Joe. "I was walking along the street when he jumped on me and I believe intended to kill xne, and !!" Joe poured forth his accusation in a great volume while Frank, the ac cused, stood silently and dejectedly by. His silence and his crushed manner he spoke of his guilt. Every one wondered how any policeman could have arrested both men when one was so clearly to blame. "Have you any reason to offer for at tacking this man in such a brutal man ner?" askod the court. "And have you any reason to give why you should not be given the maximum sentence?" Joe looked mournfully at the Court and slowly shook his head. "Since you admit assaulting this man with a knife, don't you think the more serious charge of attempting to kill him ought" to be placed against you?" asked Judge Hogue of the self-confessed assailant of Joe. Frank cast another of his beseech ing looks at the court. 'Tch kan nlcht English sprechen," he muttered in rich Teutonic accents. At these words the. other man turned pale and leaned against the railing for support. He knew that he was lost. For when an Interpreter was Infused into the proceedings It developed that Joe was really to blame for the fight. Joe paid $20 for the deception -and Frank went free but it was a close call for him. jJAY SMITH MERRILL had fallen 1 I a victim to the manly loveliness of the official flirt of the Police Depart ment. "With a view to discouraging a de cided tendency towards flirting which divers and sundry lonesome ladles aru known to have developed. Chief Hunt some time since picked out the finest looking man he could get hold of and bade him lure forward maidens into the toils of the law. As already stated, May Smith Merrill was one of these. Miss Merrill's flirt ing propensities had been called into action the moment she saw Police Ser geant Slover, and she gave her de murest smile and flaunted her lace handkerchief in his face as he was passing her. Then there was an ex change of pleasantries between them, followed by a stroll which wound up at the police station, to the horror of tho young woman, who had expected a small bird and a cold bottle Instead of a small cell and a cold reception into Jail. Upon her promise to be less suscep tible to manly charms in tho future, May Smith Merrill was let go, how over. WILLI AM SHIELDS lives out in the woods and chops trees. Only once every four months does Bill come to Portland, and that is when he has succeeded in compiling a wad of currency amounting to $100. It is ab solutely necejsary for Bill to have that much money, for no smaller sum could possibly suffice to carry out his idea of a good time. For Bill must have cham pagne and plenty of It. His stays in Portland are generally of about eight hours" duration but such an eight hours! At the end of that time Jie Invariably lands in cold stor age, but invariably manages to spent every cent first, so that It Is necessary for him to do a five-days turn on the rockpile before he Is able to get back to his lonely bachelor's cabin In the woods. "When Bill made his third annual ap pearance in the Trouble Shop yesterday morning Judge Hogue suggested a new system for Bill which may save him lots of trouble in the future- IkQ. court told him he should hereafter save $125 before coming to town, and when he arrives should leave $25 at the police station. That would bo enough to pay his fine and would do away with his unpleasant days on the rocrrplle. Tho logic of this remark "brought a gleam of intelligent acquiescence in Bill's manner, and he assured the court he would always follow that course in the future. Just as a sort of Thanksgiving sur prise Judge Hogue suspended tho usual sentence and gave Bill 15 minutes to get back into the woods. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND, Nov. 23.
