THE MORKJSG OREGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 53, 1904. 15 GREAT TURKEY DAY Strongs Demand for All That Were Received. NO PRICE SLUMP EXPECTED Quatfty, on the Whole, Is Better T'lan Usual Reports From the East of Short Crops and High Prices. " Yesterday' was the big day In the wholesale turkey market, as today will see the rush with the wholesale trade. It is estimated that over 5000 turkeys were received on Front street, but this was not the total receipts o the city, as many of the local markets re ceived their supplies direct from the country. Stocks on Front street moved promptly, and aa lighter receipts are looked for. today, the market & likely to remain in food condition up to the1, end. Prices ranged all the way from 15c to 21o. A few extra fancy birds brought 22c The lowest price was for culls. Some dealers com plained ot receiving more than the usual sup ply of poor turkeys, but on "the whole the quality was very good. It may be of some interest to the trade to know that reports from the Eastern states all pointed to a shortage fa the turkey supply, and high prices in consequence. The Chicago Packer collected a mass of statistics from the East and Middle "West that indicated a marked scarcity of turkeys. In many sections there was general complaint that the severe weather last Winter damaged the broods to a considerable extent. Prices quoted In the East range all the way from 20c to 2Sc for choice. In the market for general produce, dreesed tur keys were the leading feature. Including three carloads that arrived from Oregon late yesterday, about 250 tons of new stock came upon the market up to this afternoon, and two more carloads of chilled turkeys from Texas were close at hand. The latter stock is of fered at retail at 25c, and is hurting the wholesale market for good California and Ore gon turkeys, which opened at 23c to 26c, and closed weak at 20c to 25c, without cleaning up. Liberal receipts are expected tomorrow. The fruit market was quieter, as turkeys absorbed most attention. Oranges were weakN under heavy supplies. Six carloads arrived. Apples also were easy, with stocks large. Choice grapes were scarce and firm. Bananas and pineapples were active and steady. Receipts of river potatoes were heavy, and the market quiet and easy, except for fancy tock, which sells readily at full prices. Sweets were easy. Onions were firm. Moderate ar-1 rivals from Oregon are dally expected, and will eell well If fancy. Wheat options opened higher, but lost roost of the gains. Barley was stronger In all posi tions, owing to the light supply and dry weather talk. Oats were dull. Feedstuffs wee Arm. Hay was steady. Fancy butter and eggs are cleaning up bet ter, owing to the holiday demand. Cheese is easy. Receipts, 60,000 pounds butter, 36,000 pounds cheese, 18,000 dozen eggs. Hops are very firm. Immediate Cause Is Placing of Large Pennsylvania Bond issue Leads to Break in StocRs. NEW YORK. Nov. 22. The opening dealings In the stock market today gave indication of an upward movement. Prices were generally higher, and the volume of buslntes was above that fcr several days past. It was evident that advantage was taken of the higher level of prices to market stocks. This has so fre quently been the action ot the market, through the recent period of its advance, that not much apprehension was caused, especially as new points of strength were developed and large buying orders passed from one to another. The fact that only 'one or two stocks were strong at a time aroused the suspicion that the market was elng supported for the pur pose of realizing. The existence of this sus picion made the market vulnerable, and when the rate for call loans flurried to 4 per cent In the afternoon, stocks came out freely from all quarters of the room, and prices broke rather J precipitately. Some of the features of strength had nominal explanations for their advance, but the subsequent market caused the Impres sion that the advance had been manipulated for purpo6es of sustaining the market. There was enormous absorption both of United States Steel preferred and of the sinking fund bonds, and the operatlond were attributed in large degree to the operations of a pool. Colorado! Fuel was the only one of the Independent steel stocks to show marked sympathy. The move ment in Brooklyn Transit and Manhattan was paralleled by that In Interbo rough Transit on the curb. On the other hand, the persistent heaviness of the Pacifies on .the Stock Ex change had Its counterpart In the declines ot Northern Securities on' the curb. The motive seemed to be a disappointment over a further postponement of the decision ot the Northern Securities case. - The special cause of the flurry In the money market was said to be the placing of over $10,000,000 of Pennsylvania Car Trust bonds. But many larger transactions than that have been conducted in the money market In the last few weeks, without disturbance. It was perceived this morning that some of the larg est recent lenders of money were not in the market, and those who-delayed filling their requirements until late bid up the rate to A per cent. There were no further engagements of gold, but the foreign exchange market con tinued firm. Last prices were only slightly above the lowest, and the closing tone was weak at losses generally of between 1 and 2 points. Bonds weakened at some points in sympathy with stocks. The total sales, par value, were $9,9S5,000. United States new 4s advanced on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing Sales. High. 87J4 ioa 07Vi 94a 134V4 60Vi 45 Low. Bid. STRONG WHEAT MARKET CHICAGO SCORES ADVANCE ON HIGHER PRICES ABROAD.' Leading Factor Is Report From Ar gentina Claiming Heavy Rains Have Delayed. Harvest. CHICAGO. Nov. 22. From Initial transac tions to the end of the seta I on. wheat exhibit ed remarkable strength. At the opening De cember wasT up llc. at $1.0S, to $1.C9, and May up c to lUc, at $1.09 to $1.09. The advance was nargely due to higher prices In foreign grain markets. Liverpool cables being up &d. notwithstanding the severe break here yesterday. The strength abroad was said to be a result of active buying caused by re ports from Argentina claiming that heavy rains had delayed harvesting in that country. From the start shorts were eager bidders tor wheat, but offerings at first were limited. A little later' there was some selling as a result of liberal receipts in the Northwest. There was also considerable profit-taking, which finally resulted In a slight reaction. At $1.08 for December, however, shorts again became active buyers, and prices started on another upward movement. Throughout the remainder of the day the tendency was toward a higher level. A number of reports were received from the Southwest, stating that rain Is great ly needed, and that much damage Is being done by drouth. Another bullish consideration was .a decrease in primary receipts. Strength of cash wheat was also a factor. The high point on December for ths day was reached at $1.09. May touched $1.10. The market closed with December at $1.09. May closed at $1.O901.O9. Strength of wheat, small country receipts and higher prices at the sample tables were factors that held corn . firm. The volume of trading was not large. December closed c higher at 49c May closed at 45846c In sympathy with the wheat market, oats were strong.
