GIYES AFTER DEATH
Henry Weinhard's Wishes for
Charity Fulfilled.
WIDOWS ARE REMEMBERED
Checks for $100. to $5000 Mailed to
Worthy Institutions and Old Em
ployes Thanksgiving Week
Selected by Executors.
Following the wishes of the late Henry
Weirrhard, the executors of his estate
yesterday distributed among the former
employes of the dead brewer, and IS
charitable institutions In the city, between
130.000 and $33,000.
When Mr. Weinhard died he left nothing
In his will calling for this generous dis
tribution of his wealth for charity, but he
did express a wish, following the desires
of Mrs. Weinhard, that his executors,
Paul Wessinger and Henry Wagner, make
the donations as they saw fit. No time
was set for giving the money to prac
tically every charitable institution in the
city, but Mrs. Weinhard and the execu
tors of the will, believing that Thanks
giving week would be the most suitable,
forwarded the various amounts, ranging
from $100 to $5000, through the mails yes
terday, in order that they might gladden
the hearts of not only those who are at
the various heads of these institutions,
but to those who are dependent upon
them.
Cancels Widow's Mortgages.
Included in the moneys distributed by
Mr. Weinhard's heirs was the cancellation
of two mortgages which assures homes
for the widows of two former employes
of Mr. Weinhard. Mr. Weinhard, during
his life, advanced "snoney to the two cm
ployes In order that they might buy their
own homes. Before the money was paid
back, however, both men died, leaving
their wives unable to take up the mort
gages or even pay the interest. Mr. Wein
hard never bothered the widows for the
interest, which, with the principal.
amounted to quite a sum. Mrs. Weln
hard and the two executors of the will
knew of Mr. Weinhard's wishes in the
matter, and yesterday the notes. Interest
and all were canceled and will be mailed
to the two women. They are not aware
that the kind hand of charity has been
extended in their direction and will not
learn until the letters containing the can
celed mortgages are received by them
ithrough the mail.
This has been the case with all other
moneys received by the charitable OTgan
izations. Not a worthy institution of
charity in the city has been overlooked
and each has been remembered gener
ously. The money coming as it did at this
time of the year, the period of good cheer
and plenty, was a pleasant surprise all
the more so because it was -not solicited
and in a measure unexpected. To those
who had known Mr. Weinhard's great
charity during his long life in Portland,
the gift of the money does not come as a
surprise, for they knew he. giving with
lavish hands to the needy, did so without
.heralding it broadcast.
Charities Remembered.
The list of charities consist of St Vin
cent Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital,
-the Boys' and Girls' Aid Society, the
Public Swimming Baths, T. M. C. A.,
x. w. c. .A., salvation Army, the volun
tecrs of America. City Board of Charities.
Baby Home, Children's Home, Mount St.
Joseph's Home for the Aged, Patton
Home for the Aged and other kindred or
ganizations, all of which were handsomely
remembered. There are still a few other
organizations to be remembered, but the
checks will not be sent out until the ex
ecutors have thoroughly satisfied ' them'
selves that they are worthy charities.
