HIS GIFTS SURVIVE
Life Work of One Man Do
nated to Portland.
MEMORY WILL BE CHERISHED
The Late Benjamin Roop, by Pre
senting the City With His Orni
thological. Collection, Formed
Nucleus of Free Museum.
In the recent death of Benjamin Roop,
which occurred at the home of his daugh
ter, Mrs. Frank Drake. Oregon, lost a
valued citizen and one who has left be
hind him something of educational benefit
to the public at large and -wrhtah will
cause his memory to be fresh for many
years when others have been forgotten
Mr. Roop donated his life work to the
city of Portland when he placed his fine
collection of birds and animals In the
City Museum, forming the nucleus of
what has become a splendid ornithological
collection. He spent many years In gath
ering his many choice specimens from the
four corners of the earth, and after its
completion he declared that the thousands
of dollars which he had put Into it bad
been fully repaid by the pleasure derived
from his work, and without compensation
presented the city with his collection.
Colonel L. Jj Hawkins was largely In
strumental in obtaining the donation from
Mr. Roop and went to great expense In
having the rare specimens properly
mounted and placed on exhibition In the
City HalL
His Eariy Life.
Mr. Roop came to Clackamas County
when a. boy and spent many years of his
life In that locality. Those who knew him
at that time have many Interesting remi
niscences to relate concerning his natur
al tendency toward all branches of nat
ural science. At one time he was deeply
interested In astronomy and used to lec
ture on that subject to his townsmen.
Birds, animals and fishes had a deep at
traction for him and he studied them
closely. On leaving Clackamas County he
went to San Francisco and took charge of
the Woodward Gardens at that place,
which position he retained for 20 years.
It was during this incumbency that he
began his collection of birds, which was
soon complete with all the specimens of
the United States and Canada. He then
turned his attention to the feathered pop
ulation of other countries of the world,
and during the years spent In San Fran
cisco the fever of collection never ceased
to burn In his veins. The opportunities
in the Zoological gardens to come in con
tact with people from all countries was
great, and In addition to obtaining many
specimens In this manner Mr. Roop sent
a man first to Africa and later to South
America, where many rare varieties were
obtained.
Birds from Borneo, sacred bronze pheas
ants from India, tiger pheasants from
Macedonia, birds of Paradise from Aus
tralia, lyre birds and a wild fighting
rooster from the Vlca Islands In the
Baltic Sea (a species now extinct) are
among some of the unusual specimens he
obtained.
One specimen of the duck-billed platl
pus cost Mr. Roop $260, and a number of
others range as high as 5100 each. He had
42 varieties of parrots and 12 different
kinds of birds of Paradise.
History of the Grizzly.
Perhaps the many people who visit the
City Museum dally do not know the his
tory of the great grizzly bear which
stands in the basement always reaching
for the coon In the tree above him, but
It Is one which a Spanish bullfighter might
be proud of. "Pompdy," as the bear
was named, belonged to Mr. Roop from
the time he was a harmless, playful little
cub, and was raised In San Francisco
In the Woodward Gardens. Once he was
sold, and before Mr. Roop got possession
of him again he had been converted Into
a professional bullfighter, and In 21 bat
tles In which he was matched with in
furiated bulls ho came out victorious.
killing his opponent in every case. He
died at the age of 20 from the effects of
this fighting. His skin was Immediately
mounted, and, eventually he found his
way Into the City Museum of Portland
where he is the delight and awe of every
child in town. The large Bengal tiger
which also stands in the basement of the
Museum, was another of Mr. Roop's life
long pets, he having owned him from a
kitten until his death.
While the museum has been enlarged by
many additional collections and speci
mens, colonel Hawkins says that fullv
one-fourth of the rare birds now exhibited
there belong to the Roop collection. The
many classes of school children which are
brought to the museum weekly testify to
tne great educational value to a com
munlty such a donation has proven. This
beneficial culmination of such a work as
Mr. Roop's and the noble and generous
spirit which prompted him to give the
public full measure of it, cannot be too
highly commended. Through It the name
of Benjamin Roop will live with the com
ing generation as It has with the past. In
nonor and respect.
