THE MORNING OHEGONIAN, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1904. CAUGHT IN A TRAP The Meier (& Frank Store PORTLAND'S LARGEST AND BEST STORE Christmas Delineator on Sale at 1 5c Copy We are Portland Agents for Biitterick Patterns We Do Artistic Picture Framing to Yonr Order at Reasonable Prices Second Floor Our Annual Doll Show Dr. Clarence Loneberry Meets the Wrong Young Lady. Takes Place Next Saturday ARRESTED ON THE STREET Asked at Police Station, He Explains Why He Attempted to Make En gagement With Fourteen-Year-Old Girl. Stepping: up to address a girl whom he had never seen hut had made an engage ment -with by telephone. Dr. Clarence Loveberry, Inspector in charge of the United States Bureau of Animal Industry, was arrested last night on the corner of Fifth and Washington streets at S:45 by Officer Kay. Immediately afterwards he was confronted by an Indignant older sister and a little later harangued out the whole affair before Captain Moore. Iove berry in the end gave bail for $200 o ap pear before tfudge Hogue this morning. Loveberry explained that a woman, a trained nurse, whom he knew slightly, had telephoned him during the afternoon asking if he wished to meet a young lady friend of hers. He took the name and telephone number but did not make use of the information till later on. He was told to call her up, he said, and it would be all right. When he called up the girl, at the num ber indicated, he asked, he alleges, for Florence G.ould. The sisters said he asked for Blanche. Florence is 26 and Blanche It. Blanche, explained Miss O. Gould, the oldest sister In the family, to Captain Moore, came to her during the evening at their home on West avenue and the Base Line road, telling her that Dr. Snow, a friend of the family, had called her up and asked to meet her over town, and asked If it would be all right. Miss Gould knew no Dr. Snow and It took little time for the older sisters to get the story out of the girl as to how she was to dress, and to dress Florence in that manner, when the two sisters, leaving the little one at home, appeared in the police station and asked for an officer to accompany them while they trapped this Dr. Snow. When Loveberry saw a slender girl standing in the middle of the car tracfts at Fifth and Washington, dressed as he expected, he walked up to her and ad dressed her. calling her by name. She seemed pleased enough, but Officer Kay looked far otherwise when he took Love berry by the arm and marched him off to the expectant Captain Moore. It took about 15 minutes to make clear to Loveberry that he had picked up with the wrong girl. He believed he had been trapped for one purpose or another, and he did not see wherein It was criminal to pick up with a girl as old as the one he had met. He then explained that he had never seen either of the girls, and that he thought he made an engagement with a woman, not a child. He expressed surprise -when told that ho had been speaking over the telephone with Blanche, saying be believed he had made the engagement with Florence, and produced a paper bearing the telephone number and the name "Florence." This did not exonerate him in the eyes of Captain Moore, 'however, who set his ball at $200. which Loveberry secured. "NEW TRANSFERS IN EEEECT. Street-Railway Patrons Experienced but Little Trouble With Them. The new transfer system inaugurated by the Portland Consolidated Hallway Company went into effect yesterday morning and gave but little trouble either to the public or to the employes of the company. A few mistakes were made and some wrong transfers were given, but it will be but a short time until patrons of the company learn the new rules and the system will work with great smoothness and convenience. The management of the company Is very much gratified at the ease with which the change from the old plan to the new was made, and is confident that It will be less than a week before there will be no fur ther misunderstandings- on the part of anyone.
