Several counties were car rled for Prohibition, among them Ben ton. Coos, Curry, Gilliam, probably Jack son, Tillamook, and perhaps Wheeler. Prohibition was evidently defeated in Douglas. Linn, Union, Wallowa, Wasco and Washington, and was badly beaten in Multnomah where It carried perhaps four precincts, and In Marion, Columbia, and Umatilla. Mead has carried every- county in Western Washington, and he has broken into the Turner strongholds In Eastern Washington. Aside from the surprises shown In Western Washing ton by the gains of Mead over the es timated majority of Republican work ers the result in Thurston County where the "blxers" cut deeply into Mead'3 vote furnishes the upset to po litical figures. Mead was expected to carry Thurston by a plurality of 500 or better, though inside Information of the bitted fight there should have indi cated a close vote. The tremendous vote for Roosevelt un doubtedly contributed heavily toward Mead's showing, but the result shows that Mead won nearly as much by the hard personal fight he made. It Is significant that where local county fights entered into the situation Moad ran ahead of the Republicans under fire on the local tickets. The. fact that C. E. Coon?
