10, THE MOKKING OKEGONIAN, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1904. ? GREAT STOGK SHOW Prize Cattle and Sheep of the Whole Continent Coming. ATTRACTED BY BIG PRIZES Conjmlseloner Scott Brings Good News From St. Louis Canada Will Be Well Represented Oregon's Prizes for Dairy Products. - j Stockralaers all over America are dis cussing the big livestock exhibits to be made at the Lewisand Clark .Exposition next year and are planning for active participation. This intelligence was conveyed to Lewis and Clark headquar ters yesterday by State Commissioner Richard Scott, -who has just returned from, St. Louis after spending several -weeks there in the Interests of next year's stock display. Not only will the States, be largely represented but there is much activity among Canadian stockgrowers and those of Mexico, says Mr. Scott. With their experiences at St. Louis to profit by, the stockmen will have a better Idea of the standards of excellence they mus"t meet and will exert themselves towards that end". "The fund, -of 540,000 set aside by the Lewis and Clark- management," said Mr. Scott, "is known of by every stock raiser I met and all think the offer a liberal one. There is no doubt but that It will attract many exhibitors and the stock exhibit Is bound to result in much benefit to the stock industry of the Pacific Coast and "West generally." Sheep and hogs will compose the principal part of the Canadian stock exhibit. Mr. Scott states. "Some of their hogs at St. Louis." he added, "weigh as much as 1100 pounds and are as big as horses. Wisconsin will probably be the banner stats for cattle and sheep at Portland next year and Western rais ers will have to show their very best stock and take great care to get them Into condition if they expect to make away with premiums over Wisconsin, or other of the big farming and stock districts of the Middle West." Regarding the awarding of prizes for stock and dairy products, Mr. Scott stated that Oregon is lining up in ex cellent shape and that previous an nouncements regarding the dairy products of the state are by no means exaggerated. The making of awards - was nearlng completion when he left St. Louis and Oregon's stock Interests appeared to be well in the van of the race, he said. The exploitation division of the Ex position Is using every means to bring the Lewis and Clark stock exhibit to the attention of the stockgrowers of America. Communications have been sent out by Secretary Reed to every stock paper in the country and the ex changes reveal that the matter is being generously taken up i-y these period! calfi. The apportionment of the $40,000 fund, as recently made by the executive committee is as follows: Horses, class A . J 12.000 cattle, class li 10.000 Sheep and coats, class C 6,500 Swine, clasa X) 3. MX) Poultry and pets, class E...... 1,500 The conditions governing the. exhibit and the classification of awards are now in preparation. FOR GOVERNMENT EXHIBITS. Preliminary Work for Buildings Be gins and Bridge Is Nearly Finished. Preliminary work on the Government buildings is progressing rapidly, the nec essary excaations and clearances having been nearly completed by the force of men placed on -the grounds by J. E. Ben nett. the contractor. The actual work of construction will shortly be gotten under way and the assurance is given that the building will be ready on contract time April 1. The bridge connecting the main Expo 8itSon grounds with the Government ex- hibit on the Peninsula will be ready for eenice within another ten days. The pil ing work is practically finished and the superstructure will be under construction by the end of the week. A first inspection of the pumping sta tion and water system at the grounds was made yesterday by Director of Works Huber. The system was found in excellent condition and only a few minor changes will be necessary to place the water department in shape to supply the entire Exposition with water. Lake water will be used for irrigation and cleaning purposes, while Bull Run water will flow from drinking fountains and taps. MAY HAVE AIRSHIP CONTEST. Lewis and Clark Officials Negotiate jWith Aeronauts at St. Louis. It is more than probable that there will be a series of airship contests at the Lewis and Clark Exposition. While in St. Louis, President Goode and his assistants will confer with a number of aeronauts. It is regarded as prob able that T. S. Baldwin, the California Inventor, whose ship California Arrow has won the attention of the world by its recent flights at St. Louis, may be induced to come here. Other distin guished inventors of air craft will bo consulted. About $10,000 is available at this time for apportionment as an airship fund, but it is thought this amount may in duce a number of inventors to come. Some definite information on the sub ject is expected at headquarters from St. Louis within a short time. LANE HAS BIG POTATOES. Enters Fine Exhibit Which Will Be Hard to Beat. The agricultural district that intends to beat Lane County on potato exhibits will have to become exceedingly busy. From Junction City came the offer yesterday to ship at once 20 potatoes weighing over 60 pounds. One of the big spuds is reputed to weigh nearly five pounds. Secretary E. C Glltner, of the Commis sion, directed that the potatoes be for warded at once. The offer was made through Dr. Charles L. Williams of Junc tion City. COMPLETE ON OPENING DAY. Construction Far More Advanced Than St. Louis at This Stage. A recent visitor to the Lewis and Clark grounds directly attached to one of the State Commissions at the St. Louis Fair, was greatly Impressed with the progress of the work. "Your Fair is more nearly completed at this moment," exclaimed the visitor, "than was the St. Louis Fair the day the gates were opened. There Is no doubt but that your Exposition will have the great advantage of being complete to the minute, when the gates are thrown open In June." Rules Governing the Fair. A complete -set of rules governing the use of the grounds by exhibitors and con cessionaires will be issued In the course of a few days, being at this time in the hands of the printer. The rates of charge foflishtlng and power and other accora modatioEs will be lncluied in th public- THE PILLS THAT RESTORE FAILING STRENGTH Mrs. O. O. Smith, 56 Bewsm St., Nashua, N. Would Walk Across Continent. Henry K. Slanter wants to walk from New York to Portland n the interest of the Exposition. Ho says he intends to locate in Oregon, and is willing to walk the entire distance from New York dressed in the guise of an explorer and carrying a Lewis and Clark banner. The offer was placed on file. SMALL CHANCE FOE HEIRS. Mrs. Reed's Legal Residence Was .Portland, and Law Will Rule. No overt action has been taken by the heirs of the late Mrs. Amanda W. Reed to obtain an portion of the estate be queathed by her to 'furnish money with which to build an institution of learn ing In Portland. Some of the. heirs are in California, and some in Portland. Some of those resident in both states are sup posed to be dissatisfied with the will. But there is no possibility of breaking ' the will and their only hope is In protesting the distribution of the property 4wben ordered by the court. The grounds on which they claim a larger share than that allotted them Is that Mrs. Reed was living in California at the time of her death and the laws of that state do not permit of a testator leaving more than a third of his estate to charities when he has legal heirs liv ing. The disputants, saying that the per sonal property follows the person, claim that under the laws of California tho 5725,000 worth of personal property be longing to Mrs. Reed should be distrib uted according to the California law. Of this $500,000 is in Oregon, and under the jurisdiction of the Oregon courts. The only hope there seems to be for the contesting heirs is over the $225,000 worth of personal property in California. But C. A. Dolph, the attorney for the es tate, does not give them a hope of that even. He said yesterday, when asked about Mrs. Reed's domicile: "She never gave up her legal residence in Oregon. In all her papers she de scribes herself as a resident, of Portland, even In her will. She had only- been a temporary resident of Pasadena, and her personal property In California would come under the jurisdiction of the Oregon court, as her domicile has always been here." ' BOYS DRIVE JANITOR TO' BAY Bishop Morris Compelled to Quell the Disturbance. John Schonic, janitor and superinten dent at the reading-room for boys main tained by- the Episcopal Church at Twenty-second and Reed streets, acquired the enmity of the boys who frequent the room, and 'last Thursday found himself tho butt for checkers, books and period icals. He was driven to a corner and made to stand. The boys did not like his manner. Bishop B. Wistar Morris hearing of the trouble went , out there on Wcdnesdny night to pour oil on the waters. The ap pearance of the venerable bishop subdued the boys. Bishop Morris said yesterday: "It was a very small matter. The boys only threw a few checkers, I believe, and are now quieted down. I took a special officer with me and the boys understand Mhat they must behave. The boys wanted some boxing gloves and I would not let them have them, but I said they could have a punching bag and now they are perfectly contented." The lot of John Schonie is only to be determined by time. BUSINESS HEMS. If Baby Is Cutting Teeth.
