THE MOBNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER .13, 1904.
RECORDS AROUSE HIS IRE
MR. "WITTENBERG SAYS MISTAKE
WAS MADE.
Denies That He Made Motion to In
stall' Heating Plant for High
School Football Team.
Questions of veracity caused a quick
passage of repartee at a meeting of the
Board of Education, last night. Clerk
Allen teas reading the minutes of previous
meetings and came to that portion re
ferring to the installing of an additional
heating plant in the High School. The
record read, on motion of Mr. Witten
berg" the plant -was ordered Installed
"for the use of the football team."
"How Is that?" Inquired Mr. Witten
berg. "I did not make such a motion.
My intention was that the plant should
be for the use of all tho pupils, and I
would like to have the record so state."
Director Williams said the motion was
as the record stated, and that was why
he voted In the negative. Mr. Witten
berg didn't care why Mr. Williams voted
against it. He knew he did not make
any such motion as the record stated,
and he would Insist that It be corrected.
Mr. Williams insisted Just as strongly
that he did specify "for the football
team." White with passion, Mr. Wltten
berc appealed to the president of the
Board, but with a woman's tact, Mrs.
Litton evaded the question. The record
stands as read, but Mr. Wittenberg want
ed it publicly announced that "the heater,
was put In for all pupils, and not for
.prizefights and the exclusive use of the
baseball team," and the Incident was
closed.
Miss M. J. Wingate applied to tho
Board for the privilege of purchasing the
buildings temporarily used for tho Park
School as soon as the Board deslrod to
sell them. Her proposition was referred
to the committee on buildings.
Robert Krohn, who has been in charge
of physical training in the city schools
for nearly ten years, asked that his sal
ary be increased from $850 to $1200 per
year. There was some opposition to the
request, but after it had been discussed
and Director Warren had stated that
Brofesor Trohn had to spend about $14
per month for carfare, the increase was
granted.
Miss Myrtle Moffett, who is one of the
instructors in drawing, who visits all the
schools of the cits, was granted an in
crease of salary of $5 per month. Her
carfare bill Is also heavy
Miss Esther Wiest was ordered em
ployed as assistant supervisor of drawing
at a salary of $65 per month.
Director Warren called the attention of
the Board to the fact that some of the
Janitors have been turning the hose oa
the interior walls of the schoolrooms,
and thereby damaging the plaster. The
janitors will be Instructed to use some
different method In cleaning.
Director Wittenberg was Indignant over
a published account of the delay In re
pairing and improving the various school
buildings of the city. He stated to the
Board that there is not a school building
in the city upon which work Is being done
which will not be fully completed in less
than a month. The Park School, which
was burned last Spring, will be ready
by Monday, but the scholars are all to
take up their studies on Wednesday of
this week In the temporary buildings.
Eight rooms will be ready for use In two
weeks In the Atkinson, Brooklyn and
Clinton Kelley Schools. Every delay has
been caused by the lack of material and
strikes. It .has been almost impossible,
he 6aid, to get lumber. Two large ves
sels are loading here for foreign ports,
and the mill people say they must sup
ply this trade In order to keep up Port
land's reputation as a lumber-shipping
port, and the schools can wait.
Superintendent of Construction Jones
indorsed Mr. Wittenberg's statement, and
said the mills had been giving the rafters
and shingles, but had held back lumber
so that almost two weeks' work had been
lost. Only 90 days' time has been avail
able between the terms to do the amount
of work necesary, and had the lumber
been available and had no plumbers
strike occurred, all the buildings would
have been ready in time for opening the
Fall term.
Regarding tho Atkinson School. Super
intendent RIgler reported that scholars
will be accommodated in the portable
buildings at the Couch School, two
classes reporting each morning and two
in the afternoon. The building will soon
be ready for nil the classes.
SCHOOLS ARE OPEN.
Reports of City Superintendent RIg
ler Show Light Attendance.
School bells sounded yesterday, but hops
are ripe, and the usual number of pupils
failed to respond. This year the sessions
began ten days earlier than usual and
the poor showing in 27 schools reported
open Is attributed to this fact.
Twenty-eight of the 32 schools in the
city opened. Tho records show the follow
ing attendance: North Central 493, In
crease of 30; Central 565, decrease of 171;
Stephens 436, decrease 48; Brooklyn 262,
decrease 63; Clinton Kelly, not opened,
will begin next Monday; Midway IS, de
crease 14; Sellwood 269, decrease 21; Sun
nysido 445. decrease 21; East Twenty
eighth, new school, 76; Chapman 453, de
crease 38; Couch 623, decrease 61; Atkinson,
no report on temporary classes; Park
school, no report, opens tomorrow; Har
rison. 680. decrease 72; Failing 586, decrease
41; South Portland 200, increase S; Fulton
50, decrease 16; Fulton Park 72, decrease
S; Alnsworth 9S, decrease 26; Marquam,
opened but not reported; High school S60,
increase 117; Woodlawn 254, increase 14;
Portsmouth, not opened; Peninsular 75.
decrease 30; Ockley Green 137, increase
36; Highland 493, same as last year;
Thompson ESI, decrease 96; Alblna Cen
tral 147, decrease 52; Williams-Avenue 650,
decrease 43; Holladay 663, increase IS;
Fernwood 11, decrease 1.
The High School opens with the great
est attendance in the history of the city.
The total reports show 920S scholars en
rolled with four large schools' to hear from
and the hopfields to send back their
pcikers. Xast year the total attendance
was 14,909. Superintendent RIgler expects
those figures to bo passed inside of two
weeks, by several hundred, as the enroll
ment In some of the schools shows con
sfiderablG growth in many districts.
He Also Blames the Stoker.
PORTLAND, Or., Sept. 12. (To the Editor.)
T notice there has been much cold about the
actions of tho fireboat at tho big water-front
nre of some days ago and in order that the
rial facta may bo known, I will make this
statement, as an unprejudiced member of the
boat crew who is familiar with the facts in
the case.
From what I know of the affair I believe no
Injustice was done Stoker Brown in throwing
the blame on him, and the ether members of
the crew will bear me out. Stoker Brown was
given every chance by Engineer Kellogg. That
his furnace iirea -were put out, thus destroying
the power of the engines, was due to the large
quantity of water which the stoker had la the
boilers. Had the water come from the ex
haust, as he claims, he could have protected
his fires from that source by simply pulling a
chain which would have thrown the water from
the exhaust into the air. Those are the facts
in the case, as every member of the crew
will testify' and the blame has not been un
justly placed upon the shoulders of the stoker.
