1QNG-MARGH TO-FAIR
large garty Will Walk
; From California,
Here
PREAGHER TQ LEAD CORPS
Rev;: Franklin Baker, of Eureka,
Wrljtes That Cadet Corps of Con
gregational Church Will Make
Trip Next Year.
In order to see the Lewis and Clark Ex
position 100 boys and youns men are going
to walk a distance of several hundred
miles from. Eureka, the metropolis of
Humboldt County, California. No greater
evidence of enthusiastic support of the
Fair has yet been received than the an
nouncement which reached Exposition
lioadquarters yesterday of the intended
pilgrimage of the Californlans.
The cadet corps of the First Congre
gational Church is the organization that
will make the long march. The expedi
tion will be headed by Rev. Franklin Bak
er, pastor of the church. The "corps ex
jects to start on the long journey late in
the Spring, after the close of the school
year. It is estimated by Mr. Baker that
"a'-month's time will be required to com
plete the journey, the route of which will
lead through much mountainous country
in Del Norte County, California, and Jo
.sephine, Douglas and other counties of
Oregon.
In his communication to the Exposition
management Mr. Baker says the Idea is
meeting with the enthusiastic support of
"both cadets and their relatives, and that
lie already has the assurance, of an at
tendance of 75 young 'men and boys rang
. ing' In age from 12 to 18 years.
Many of those who will cdme could not
afford to defray the expenses of a trip to
the Fair by the ordinary route, and it is
for the benefit of these that the march
has been determined upon, as it is Mr.
Baker's idea that none of the youthful
members of his corps can afford to miss
the hlg World's Fair of the west Aside
,lrom the ultimate purpose of the march,
it will afford unequaled advantages for
seeing the intervening country, and as a
. producer of health and brawn will "be of
inestimable benefit to those who accom
pany the expedition.
The corps will wear rough-rider uni
forms and will be well prepared for their
Iqng trip. The details of the journey and
the exact route that will be taken have
not yet been settled upon.
While the walk to Portland will be full
of novelty, the return trip would be more
In the way of a hardship, as the novelty
..vould have worn off. It Is intended to
return to Eureka by steamer. To raise
the necessary transportation funds Rev
3Ir. Baker intends to arrange for a series
of entertainments at the different settle
ments along the line of march. Having
considerable talent in his corps. Rev. Mr.
Bakex believes a considerable fund could
be raised in that manner to supplement
the fund to be raised by subscription be
fore leaving.
D. C. Freeman, secretary to President
Goode, will communicate today with' the
cuuiuaiELaiii; ouering mem
the good wishes of the Exposition man
agement and assuring them of a hearty
reception upon their arrival in Portland.
Morrow County intends to enter the
race of the Oregon counties for first place
me Lewis and Clark Exposition, and
J3l-thl? idss.' in. view is now DreDarlnsr
ttor the county exhibits. Henry Black-
ourn, a well-known resident of the coun
if, was a. visitor in me city yesterday and
he stated that his county is going to
make a strong race to lead In the matter
of fine agricultural exhioits. A substan
tial county appropriation has already been
made, and if the interest of the residents
in the Fair Is any criterion. Mr. Black
"burn says, there will be no trouble about
raising all necessary funds for an exten
sive representation of Morrow County's
proaucis.

The passing from this brief earthly, ex

a man as Otto Martin Rosendale at th
early age of 44, causes us to pause and
marvel at tne lnscrutaoie ways of .Provi

mining engineer, having been frequently
summoned as an expert by the United

master of the German, French, Spanish
and English languages, and his papers
and addresses commanded attention
wherever presented. His death came sud

from the French service he conducted
exploration work for an English company
in Japan, and In 1885 came to the "United
