BIG CROWD AT PICNIC.
Five Thousand People Make Merry at
Catholic Festivity.
A compliment Is due the cartrucks that
took 5CO0 people to St Johns to the Cath
olic picnic at Cedar Park yesterday after
noon, for they had a Job worthy of their
ateel. From the transfer station at the
tnd of the Upper Alblna line to Et Johns,
trains of three cars ran every 20 minutes,
and these -were so crowded that dozens
sat on the roofs of the cars. To the
orphans of three Catholic institutions,
which are to- receive the money made
from the picnic, there will be coming
about $3000 In consequence.
A Catholic fair was not In it for fun
compared with this picnic. There was
everything a man could want for a
Fourth of July afternoon. Strong drinks
werb barred, and as no fireworks wore
sold on the ground, what little were
brought along by picnickers were soon
shot off. But there were hundreds of
pretty girls and a place to dance, and
soft drinks with which to cool off, and
sylvan retreats in which to rest. All
these requisites for pleasure were made
use of, and the man who did not help to
give one or two girls a good time was
not noticed.
There were places In which to picnic
and eat for the more staid, and oppor
tunities for the agile to show their speed
In races. Food was -obtainable at booths
all day long. Many women worked hard
to help the orphans, and their success
was markeJ.
The athletic events, which were of the
holiday variety, were run in a narrow
path through the crowd. Some of these
were for speed, but most were freak
races. Prizes were offered by leading
merchants and keen competition was not
lacking.
The winners of events and prizes
awarded follow:
Fifty-yard -lash for boys, won by "Will
lam Munlcy; prize, suit of clothes.
Fifty-yard dash for girls, won by Hag
gle Miller; prize. $7 Jacket.
Fifty-yard potato race, won by Henry
Beckman; prize, first-class ball and bat.
Fifty-3ard egg and spoon race for girls,
won by Catherine Dooley; prize, pair of
shoes.
Fifty-yard sack race for men, won by
Edward Corcoran: prize, umbrella.
Fifty-yard three-logged race, won by
Duggan brothers; prize, two fancy shirts.
Hundred-yard dash, won by Tom Dug
gan; prize, J3 hat.
Seventy-five-yard race for young wo
men, won by Nellie Daly; prize, manicure
set.
Fat man's fifty-yard race, won by Er
nest Nehera; prize, box of cigars.
GEEAT GARBAGE PILE AETRE.
Multnomah Club Thought for a Time
to Be Burning.
A large blaze in a garbage pile back of
the Multnomah Club's field called out the
Fire Department at 3:30 this morning. A
sky-rocket fell on the refuse early in the
evening and orlgnated the fire. From
downtown. It appeared that the Multno
mah Club building was burning. It, how
ever, was never in danger. The main
tent of the carnival was only 100 yards
distant, and some fear was entertained
for a short time that it would bo de
stroyed. Disorder in the Lobbies.
LONDON, July 4. The government to
night carried through Premier Balfour's
closure proposal, under which business
will be transacted for the remainder of
the session of the House of Commons by
a majority of 80, despite the heated de
nunciations of members of the opposi
tion. Disorderly scenes took place In the lob
bies, which were Invaded by the public
and by deputations seeking to influence
members to vote against the government.
The policemen, who were reinforced, final
ly ibrced the crowd Into the courtyard
adjoining the House.
