The grain bag market la quiet, fanners hav
ing hardly begun to buy yet, but prices are
very firm, owing to the excellent crop pros
pects la Oregon, "Washington and Idaho and
the fact that the available supply of bags Is
cot heavy. Some figures on the supply and
demand for the present year year have been
compiled by the San Francisco Commercial
News. That paper says:

In the face of these figures. It does seem
absurd that the price of bags 6hould have de
clined from 5c to below Cc during the
past month. The cause Is undoubtedly at
tributable to the shrlnkago In the California
crop, bag dealers here not realizing what the
Northern country promises In the way of a
crop today. Estimates for a 70.000.000-bushel
crop are even now made by operators In tho
North.
It looks as If the North would come to Cali
fornia for every bag not required at home,
and etill be obliged to look elsewhere for a
further supply; and that Instead of selling at
present rates, a fair figure may be. obtained
In July and August'by those who" decline to
accept present rates, which are not remuner
ative. Salmon Market Is Inactive.
ASTORIA, June 30. (Special.) Samuel El
Xnore,wbo has returned to Astoria from an ex
tended Eastern visits etates that there Is lit
tle activity in the salmon market, and that
canned goods generally are not moving briskly.
The Alaska Packers' Association price of $1.30
on the Coast has placed Alaska fish In the
15c class with Columbia River salmon, and
the demand has been curtailed. Brokers are
buying from hand to mouth.
"It la evidently the Intention of the brokers
to make the packers carry stock," Mr. Elmore
pays. "Considerable Puget Sound fish has been
chipped around the Horn, and this Is being
consumed as the demand requires. Brokers
eeem to take little stock In the Columbia River
pack shortage, and usually regard statements
about the curtailed pack to date aa an effort
on the part of the Informant to force prices to
ft higher figure."
Heavy Ron of Salmon on Sound.
BELLINGHAM. Wash., June SO. (Special.)
-There Is now on the greatest run of Spring
salmon In the history of Puget Sound. Deputy
State Fish Commissioner Rteeland. returned to
day from the Spring salmon traps situated
around Deception Pass and the north end
of "Whldby Island, and sajs that taking 15
traps and averaging their catch It runs nine
tons of fish to the trap at each raising of it.
The big run of this species of salmon Is at
tributed to the prevailing high waters of th
Columbia River, which. Mr. Rteeland be
lieves. Is turning the fish from that stream
Into the waters of Puget Sound.

But Most Important Characteristic of
Market Continues to Be Its
Total Neglect.
NEW YORK, June 30. There was a slight
stirring In the sluggish pool at speculation this
morning, but the day's total trading was so
small compared with any period of average
Interest In the stock market as to make com
parisons from day to day quite meaningless.
The general surface of the market was bard
and unyielding and gave an Impression of an
undertone of confidence, even though attempts
to cut prices up provod futile. Attempts were
not determined or Important, and the charac
teristic of the market continued to be Its total
neglect. Canadian Pacific was still absorbed,
especially for London account.
The money market was entirely unruffled
by any preparation for the July settlements,
although & payment on account of the Japan
ese loan subscripUons, estimated to call for
over $12,000,000. was made today In addition
to the routine disbursements called for at the
tum of the half year. The sub-treasury made
a payment of $1,000,000 on account of Philip
pine revenue operations, and of $540,000 on ac
count of Klondike gold deposited at Seattle.
A transfer from Ban Francisco also figured
In the sub-treasury operaUons, and that In
stitution will begin the payment of Govern
ment Interest tomorrow.
The bond market was dull and steady.

were unchanged on call.

Chicago Wheat Market Rallies on Good
Baying Orders.
CHICAGO, June 30. More favorable har
vesUng weather In the Southwest took the
edge off the wheat market at the start. Not
withstanding an Improved tone in foreign grain
markets, sentiment In the pit here was quite
bearish. The opening on September was a
shade lower to c higher, at 8l74e81c to
81ic The principal feature of trading was
the liquidation of July holdings and the
changing from July to distant deliveries. Be
fore the decline was checked, September went
off to 80c Bullish advices regarding the
Spring wheat crop were received from the
Northwest. These rumors were accompanied
by enough buying orders to occasion a good
rally. September clooed at 81U81t4c
Liquidation of July holdings was the fea
ture of trading In the corn pit. September
opened a shade lower to a shade higher at
48H4Sc and closed at 48Hc
The oats market showed slight losscx Sep
tember opened at 32Hc and closed at 32c
In spite of considerable liquidation, the pro
vision market ruled firm and finished the day
with fair advances for all products. Septem
ber lard closed "Vt&lOc up; pork was up 20c,
and ribs 12c higher.

IRON TRADE REVIEW.
First Half of Year Ends With Restrictive
Trend Under Way.
CLEVELAND, O., June 30. The Iron Trade
Review has this to say concerning market
conditions In its current issue:
The first half of 1904 ends with a restrictive
movement under way In the Iron trade that
promises to bring plglron production back to
the February basis, when the output was at
a yearly rate of less than 15,000,000 tons.
The extent of shutdowns of rolling mills and
steel works on July 1 and tho length of the
Idle period cannot be fully determined at this
writing, but will be considerable.
Scale disagreements will cause some Inter
ruption, particularly In sheet and tiuplate
mills, and to some extent in bar mills. But
there Is a disposition among blast furnace
operators to prevent the accumulation of their
product so that the Idleness of the mills will
not necessarily mean further weakening In the
plglron market.
A scale agreement was reached by the
American Sheet and Tinplate Company In the
week on a basis of 18 per cent reduction from
last year's scale, which leaves wages as they
have been since the special April conference.
The rebate Question is still undecided, bow
ever. Independent sheet manufacturers want
a 20 per cent reduction, and are still In con
ference with the workers. The nonunion mills
of the leading Interests are the disturbing fac
tors, and the possibility of tho Idleness of all
union sheet and tinplate mills for some weeks
Is not remote.
The Republic Iron & Steel Company will
close most of Its mills for a part of July at
least. At Jollet, 111., the rod mill department
has closed down, and further suspensions
there are expected. The National Tube Com
pany will close down some of Its mills for
urgent repairs, but has plenty of orders. A
number of American Steel & Wire Company
plants, as well as Independent wire plants In
Pittsburg and Ironton districts, will be out
early In July.
The hoop and bar mills of the Carnegie
Steel Company are expected to be off for a
time, the scale being still unsigned. With
not a few mills there Is no pressing necessity
for running until midyear, when repairs are
needed. In the Central West a few mora
blast furnaces have gone out, and there Is an
evident adjustment to the requirements of a
quiet Summer.
In spite of these general preparations for
curtailed output there has been more than a
fair volume of Inquiry for plglron and for steel
products In the past week. If anything like
the full tonnage represented In Inquiry were
realized In orders the activity would be
marked.
The plgiron situation gives token of more
life, and the proportion of Inquiry resulting In
business Is probably greater than In finished
material.

New-Crop Grain Coming In Slowly
and Shippers Doing but Little

SAN FRANCISCO, Cal.. June 30. (Special.)
The deadlock in the local grain freight mar
ket continues. The last vessel to. load old
crop cleared yesterday, leaving on the engaged
list only one vessel, which will load new
crop barley. The new crop, of grain Is not
coming In freely and shippers are doing but
little buying. Frolght rates aeked by the for
eign Shipowners' Union make it impossible
to do any chartering with grain at current
prices. Engaged tonnage In port, 1581 tons;
disengaged, 70,000 tons; on the way, 261,000
tons.
The grain market Is rather firmer, but In
active. Wheat options were strengthened by
the Chicago advance. Cash barley was stiff
on small available supplies, today's arrivals
being mostly sold ahead. Oats were quiet.
Fcedstuffs were easy. Flour was steady and
more active. Hay was dull, with reports that
farmers are combining to raise prices.
New features of the fruit market were ar
rivals of the first Bartlett pears and nutmeg
melons of the season from the Sacramento
River, both bringing premium prices. Nearly
all deciduous fruits were in ample supply
with an easy tone pre ailing. Cltrue and trop
ical fruits were quiet and unchanged.
Receipts of potatoes Tcre light. The demand
was active and the market fully as strong a
yesterday. Yellow onions declined eharply un
de large arrivals. Red onions were steady.
Miscellaneous egetables were In ample supply
and easy.
Butter Is still held at high prices despite
large stocks. Cheese Is firm. Eggs are
easier. Receipts, 81,000 pounds of butter;
34,000 pounds of cheese; 38,000 dozen egga.

FUHERAL OF CHAELES 0HLE.
Was an Old and Well-Known Resi
dent of Oregon.
Charles Ohle, an old resident of
Portland, died at the Good Samaritan
Hospital "Wednesday, and -was buried
yesterday at Greenwood cemetery be
sldte the remains o his wife. In the
'70s when Ben Hblladay was the rail
road king: in Oregon and was also con
ducting' steamship lines, Charles Ohle
was one of his trusted employes. Ohle
for a number of years conducted tho
Seaside House, at Clatsop Beach, for
Holladay, and afterward he worked as
timekeeper at the Willamette Steam
Mills, Lumbering & Manufacturing
Company for Joseph Holladay. Recent
ly he was employed at the Belvedere
Hotel. Ohle was born on February 21,
1835. His funeral was held from Hol
man's undertaking parlors and a num
ber of old-time friends of the deceased
acted as pallbearers.
Sheriff Goes for Ira Connett.
ALBANY, Or., June 30. (Special.)
Sheriff Huston left this afternoon for
Prlneville to get Ira Connett, wanted here
on an Indictment for forgery. Connett
broke Jail at Sodavllle and went to Priner
vllle, where he was arrested when an
indictment wa3 found. He Is alleged to
have forged a check for $12. He will be
returned here Sunday.
