GROWING FAST AS EVER
GREAT PROGRESS OF EASTERN
SUBURBS OF PORTLAND.
New Factories at St. Johns, Sellwood
and Montavilia-Nccd of Mora
-. School Room on All Sides.
"While there Is no authentic record, It
may be said that Portland suburbs are
building- up faster so far this year than
ever before. Inside the city limits build
ing' permits are Issued and a record of
tho dwellings erected can be kept, but
not so with the suburbs; which frlngs the
southern, eastern and northern boundary
lines, and cover thousands .of acres of
land, all of which is really part of the
city and should be so credited. Naturally
jrrowth closely follows the lines of su
burban railways which give 5-cent faresr
Examples of extraordinary suburban
growth Is found along the Mount Scott
line, between Powell Valley road and
Lents, Including Woodstock, Tremont and
Lents. Since last August over 2000 acres
has been cleared and over 200 dwellings
have been built in that district. So great
has been the Increase in these two school
districts that the buildings are over
crowded, even the new building at Lents
being taxed to its utmost capacity. ,A
new school district has Just been carved
out of the territory between Woodstock
and Lents, and a new schoolhouse is to
be built as soon as the arrangements can
be made. At the rate dwellings are go
ing up now in the direction of Lents, Ave
miles from the Courthouse, Portland will
soon bo built up 'for that distance with
residences almost solidly.
Building on the Peninsula.
At St. Johns dwellings are springing up
in every direction, and yet there are no
houses for rent. One hundred and twenty
seven were counted within half a mile of
the electric railway station, and this
number does not include all by any
means. Councilman Monahan a year ago
predicted that St. Johns would have 2000
people by the end of 1904. but there are
probably that number now. The school
directors, who made provisions to build a
two-room annex to the present four-room
building, have about concluded that an
elgbt-room building will be none too large
lor the next school ybar, and the full
plans prepared by Architect Chappelle
Brown will probably be adopted and at
least an eight-room structure built
On the bluff along the Willamette
Boulevard some large dwellings are be
ing put up, and the foundation of a boarding-house
for the Peninsular Lumber
Company has Just been laid. Between
the boulevard and the edge of the bluff
overlooking the river a large number of
residences have been erected for men
employed in the Industries scattered along
the river.
Tho Peninsular Lumber Company Is
doubling the capacity of its plant and Is
erecting a planer building about 100x150.
It is estimated that the company' is
spending $50,000 in improvements.
Just on the north side of this plant the
Green Bay Lumber Company will put up
its great plant, including a box and fin
ishing factory. It will take about a year
to build.
The Acme Lumber Company has com
pleted a large lumber-yard on "the bluff
overlooking the Peninsular Lumber Com
pany's mill, to handle locally the output
of this and the Green Bay Lumber Com
pany's plant. It has already completed
several buildings, and Is now building a
tramway 'down from the bluff to the O.
JL & N. spur. This will be operated by
a stationary engine placed at the top,
for which the foundation of piles is now
being built. It Is proposed to pull up the
loaded wagons on cradles as boats are
lifted out of the water at shipyards. At
present the output for the retail business
is pulled up the bluff by means of a
winding road.
At the water front the foundation for
the new gristmill is being laid. Owing to
high water no progress "has been made on
the boat plant of the St. Johns Lumber
Company. It is expected that work on
the new plant for the Portland Woolen
Mills, which will give employment to
more than 150 neonlft. will snnn ho nnilor
way. Plans have been prepared and bids )
will be received this week. The main
structure will bo two-story, in the shape
of an L, and cost $100,000outslde of tho
machinery. President W. P. Olds says
the machinery will be the latest and best
this country affords, and by the time the
plant is in operation It will have cost
. $230,000. Most of tho old hands, who aro
now employed In the Bannockburn mill
at Albany will be engaged again.
Sellwood Cigar Factory.
At Sellwood the building for tho Port
land Cigar Factory Is completed, the ma
chinery in place, and work will be started
this morning. The building is two-story.
100x50 feet, and well lighted. It cost
about $3500. Mainly local capital Is In
terested In tho concern. Employment for
50 hands, mostly young women, will be
given at the start The company will as
far as .possible employ local help, though
at first mainly skilled hands will be em
ployed. Tomorrow night the Sellwood Board of
Trado will hear tho proposition of some
parties whd wish to start a factory. D.
M. Donaugh has asked every member to
attend.
In the Mount Tabor Districts.
The building at Montavllla to be oo
. cupled by the broom factory Is nearly
completed, and represents an Investment
of about $10,000. Employment for 30 hands
will be Elven. and about 100 dozen brooms
per day will bo turned out By another
year Montavllla hopes to have a fruit
cannery and other industries. That sub
urb Is experiencing a building boom. It
has spread northward till It has reached
the O. R. & N. track, and south to the
Section Line road.
The public school building Is over
crowded, and the directors will have to
provide at least two more rooms for next
year. Principal Bowland reports over 400
pupils this month.
- Iu Mount Tabor district No. 5, where
there are two schoolhouscs. the attend
ance was 525 during the latter portion of
the year, and the directors will have to
provide moro rooms. Toward the north.
In Center Addition, more than 50 new
houses have sprung up the past year, and
tho new famines there havo swelled the
attendance materially. It is considered
probable that a two-room building will
havo to be put In the north end of the
district this vacation. In both Mount Ta
bor and Montavllla It was expected that
the two districts would be annexed to
Portland, and thus solve the schoolroom
proposition, but it is now realized that
the people will havo to help themselves
as best they can. A movement is on foot
to Incorporate Mount Tabor district No.
5. and a bill for this purpose will he pre
pared for presentation to the Legislature
next Winter. The object Is to obtain au
thority to build sewers, open streets and
provido more water. It Is also possible
that the same steps may be taken In
Montavllla, especially to get more water
In the Sstrict between Sunnyslde' and
West avenue the need of sewerage is
"pressing.

Miners Deny the Ambush.
BOCKVALE, Wyo., June 12. Coal
miners who were In the - skirmish at
Dunnville when John Carley, one of the
Cripple Creek miners' was killed by the
militia, deny the published report that
tho miners were first to fire. Neither
were they entrenched behind rocks wait
ing for the militia, accoraing to their
statement, but they appeared on the
scene, and fled Immediately they were
fired upon.
The miners deny having fired a shot.
They say, it would have been easy ior
them to have completely anmanated the
small squadron of militiamen had they
so desired.
