E REVIVAL REPORTED.
etter Movement at "Western and South
western Centers.
JfEW YORK. May 20. Special advices to
International Mercantile Agency describe
general trade revival tbta week at proml-
tent Western and Southern centers. The
lmulus Is noteworthy, contrasted with con-
lUon existing during the previous month,
nd has Its basis In more seasonable weather
nd Increased orders for Spring stocks. Job
ing centers report a material addition to the
olume of "restocking business," with a ten
ency among many merchants to duplicate
rders previously given for Spring goods.
Nothing lines are reflecting improvement.
hlch is specially evidenced throughout the
outhwest. Boots and shoes are more ac-
ive.
The crop situation has been greatly bene-
ted by the warmer weather, which has ad
anced wheat In sections whore the backward
prlng did great damage. Although wheat
lered serious Injury by the setback en-
untered during the recent cold snap, a fair-
(zed crop can be counted on If normal con
ditions prevail. Most grains will be harvest-
two or three weeks later than usual. Win-
wheat is showing particularly well In some
eptlone.
Seeding In the Red River Valley district
las been retarded by unfavorable weather.
that the crop outlook in that section Is
oblematlcal. Elsewhere throughout the
lorthwest encouraging conditions prevail.

DEADLOCK IN STOCKS
CAPITALISTS REFRAIN FROM
BUYING OR LIQUJDATING.
Monetary Situation Shows Some Im
provementRise In Union Pa
cific Only Notable Movement.
NEW TORK. May 20. The narrowing and.
varying fluctuations In the stock market and
the small volume of the total transactions
each day are accurate reflections of the timid
and vaccllatlng temper of the speculative
mind. The great body of capitalists are evi
dently refraln(cg from either adding to their
holdings of stocks or liquidating. The con
viction is general that the condition of ab
solute deadlock in which the market Is now
held cannot last long. The new dlrectloh
to be taken Is a matter of profound doubt.
The midday rally today was principally due
to the heavy debit balance by the Sub-Treasury
warrant to J. P. Morgan & Co., the
fiscal agents of the Panama Republlo for the
-canal payment. The exports. Including to
morrow's, are the principal cause of the loss
of $13,691,000 by the banks on Sub-Treasury
operations for the week. The $2,500,000 ship
ment In gold coin as to bo reckoned In addi
tion. The movement of cash to the Interior
has been heavily in favor of New York again,
promising to reduce the loss to the Sub
Treasury by fully half. The extent to which
today's payment will figure In the averages
is expected, therefore, to decide the, complexion
of the cash Item by the extent to which It
will modify the cash loss otherwise Indicated.
The beginning of the hearing In the suit
to enjoin the Northern Securities distribution
was of some encouraging effect, owing to the
steps thus taken toward ending a condition
embarrassing to the financial world. As
stated by the counsel In the case, It Is de
sirable to solve a dispute by which dividends
of $40,000,000 are tied up. Union Pacific's
rise may have been due to the hope of win
ning its contentions in the Northern Securities
suit. It was the only noticeable movement
In the list. The market closed not far from
the best prices.
Bonds were dull and Irregular. Total sales.
$1,310,000. United States bonds were un
changed on call.

Chicago Market Again Firm In Spite et
Good Weather CoattiUoas.
CHICAGO. May 20. Under the Influence of
congestion in the May delivery, the wheat
market opened flrnt In the face of excellent
weather conditions. The smallest local" re
ceipts on record namely, five cars with little
prospects of any Increase In arrivals, caused
an active demand for the May option. Initial
sales of May showed a gain of t?2c at
99cS$L0L July opened c lower to c
higher, at 87g87c There was little May
wheat on the market. Shorts. In their anx
iety to cover sales, bid the price of May to
$1.01 within the first 10 minutes. Naturally
other options felt the effect. July advanced
to SSc early In the day. The market was
extremely erratic the entire session. During
the latter part of the day future deliveries
were subjected to a considerable selling pres
sure as a result of favorable crop reports.
May closed at 99c and July at S6SSc
As a result of a small movement and of
the strength In wheat, the corn market was
strong early In the day. Later the selling
became quite general and prices receded sharp
ly. The market closed firm, at 48c, a gain
of Sc for July.
The feature of trading in oats was the early
strength and later weakness of the May de
livery. May ranged between 41c and 43c,
closing at 42c July opened at 3SS3Sc
and closed at SSc.
Provisions were firm under the Influence of
the strength In grains. July pork closed with
a loss of 12c; lard was down 2c and ribs
5c lower.
