IMPROVING OREGON LINES
SOUTHERN PACIFIC .BEGINS EX
TENSIVE WORK.
"Building Steel Bridges, Filling Tres
tles and Laying Heavy Rails
Faster Trains Will Result.
The Oregon lines of the Southern Pacific
Trill soon be in as good condition as those
in California and other states, and -within
a year; trains are likely to make the trip
between Portland and San Francisco
znuch faster than the present schedule
provides.
The "work now under "way is the erec
tion of steel instead of wooden, bridges In
many places and the filling of many tres
tles "with solid earth. Two steam shovels
aro already engaged in the latter work
and a third -will be added next -week. An
equal number is employed in filling and
ballasting the O. R. & Jf. lines.
E. E. Calvin, general manager of the
Harrimaa lines In Oregon, expects to ar
range to lay a considerable amount of
aew rails on the mountain sections of the
Southern Pacific in this state thl3 Sum
mer. The present rails weigh only 56 and
62 pounds to the yard, but the new rail
nvlll weigh SO pounds and will gradually
oo continued the whole length of the road
feetween Portland and San Francisco.
All these improvements combined will
tender it safe to travel much faster over
the Oregon lines than has been the cus
tom hitherto. It Is necessary to slow down
at all wooden trestles, and trains cannot
run safely at high speed on light rails,
especially In wet weather and on sharp
curves.
"With the pending Improvements com
pleted, the Harriman lines in Oregon will
have been brought up to the standard set
lor Western roads in recent years. Many
millions have been expended in such work
on the Northern, Central and Southern
Pacific roads, until the hauling power of
each locomotive has been immensely in
creased, the speed of trains increased, the
f omfort and safety of passengers en
hanced and operating expenses greatly re
duced. In fact the Western roads are fast
coming up to the high standard set by
those of the densely populated East and
this year's work In Oregon will bring her
roads up with her neighboring states.
HEAVY TRAVEL TO ST. LOUIS.
Exceeds Expectation of Railroad Men
and May Require More Trains.
The number of peoplo jvho have gone to
the St Louis Fair from the Pacific North
west at this early period in the season
has been a surprise to railroad men. It
was not expected that any considerable
number would go for at least a month
after the opening, as it was well known
that the Exposition was not completed,
but it is estimated that already 1S00 per
sons have gone from this section.
The indications are that there will be a
continuous increase in the number of peo
ple who go to the Exposition, and the rail
roads are already considering the proba
ble necessity of Increasing train service.
Eastbound travel is running pretty close
to the capacity of their present trains,
and if it should still grow as It does now
more trains will be needed to carry it.
THROUGH ROCK ISLAND CAR
Will Be Run Frorn Portland Over
New Line to St. Louis.
Another route to St. Louis has been
opened through the completion of the St.
Xouls, Kansas City & Colorado Railroad,
a part of the Rock Island system, which
has just been put in operation. It Is in
tended to run a through Rock Island car
over this line to St. Louis, beginning soon
after June 1, the car to start from Port
land over tho O. R. & N. and run over
the Oregon Short Line, either the Union
Pacific or Denver & Rio Grande as far as
ilenver, and tho Rock Island thence to St.
Louis. Through cars will also run from
Ban Francisco by the Central Pacific route
and. the Rock Island.
WESTERN ROADS MERGED.
Butte & Plumas Will Work With the
Western .Pacific.
STOCKTON, CaL, May 20. Fred M.
"West, of Stockton, one of the directors of
(the Western Pacific Railway Company, to
day received the following telegram from
President W. J. Bartnett, who is now in
Kew York:
TTou are authorized to announce the
merger of tho interests of the Butte &
Plumas Railroad with the Western Pa
cific Both interests will work in common
In future. Also that construction work
win begin from Stockton to Sacramento
as soon as necessary details can be set
tled." New Officials fop Short Line.

ft was announced at Oregon Short Line
headquarters today that David R. Gray,
of Salt Lake, will be appointed district
freight and passenger agent for the Ore
gon Short Line, with headquarters in this
ilty. Mr. Gray's territory will include
Utah, and tho "Union and Southern Pa
cific from Reno, New, to Green River,
Wyo. H. O. Wilson, of Butte, will be
Civen a similar title for Montana, and
F. iL Plalsted, of Boise, for Idaho.
CRAND REPUBLICAN RALLY TO.
NIGHT.
Some- of tho ablest speakers of Oregon
will deliver addresses at tho meeting of
Portland's people to bo hell tonight at
the Empire Theater. Hon. L. Soils Cohen
Trill ba one of tho principal speakers of
Xho evening. Every attention will be paid
lodes who may attend this meeting.
Re-Elect Entire Teaching Staff.
XEWBERG, Or., May 20. (Special)
Tho directors of tho Newberg public
school have re-olected unanimously the
entire corps of teachers for the next year,
as follows:
R. W. Kirk, principal; F. H. Buchanan,
assistant principal; Mrs. David Martin,
Miss Isora Edmuston, Miss Ina Gould,
fMlss Bessie Houck, Miss Ella Crawford
and Miss Margaret Inglis.
This Is considered a fitting tribute to
tho efficient work which is being done
under adverse circumstances. The school
Is overcrowded and the board is looking
about town for another room to rent next
year -until a new building is erected.
