15 . THE MORNING OKEGONLAN, FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 1904. IRON MARKET QUIET Lake Ore Interests Adopt a Schedule, STEEL TRUST NOT BUYING PIG Uow Prices Named for Pennsylvania Tunnel Castings Record Months for Wire Manufacturers Production of Ingots. NEW YORK. April 28. The Lake ore In terests made good progress, eays the Iron Age. In their efforts to save the Ore Asso ciation. The negotiations thus far bare led to the adoption of a schedule of prices on the basis of $3.60 per ton foe old range Bessemer ores and $3.25 per ton for Mesaba Bessemers, a differential, therefore, of only .25 cents per ton. Last year the base price was $4.00, "while for the preceding season It was $1.25. The Question of tonnage and allotments Is to be taken up at the next meeting at Cleve land May 3. It Is estimated that less than 3,000,000 tons In all are to be sold, -while the stock now on hand at lower Lake ports and at furnaces Is about 6,000.000 tons. It Is figured that less than 15,000,000 tons need be brought down for the coming season to the Spring of 1005. The Bessemer pig Iron market is exceed ingly quiet, and In the Pittsburg district Iron Is offered freely for May dolivcry at $13 at furnace, while basic Is offered freely at $12.75. There Is no truth In the reports that the "United States Steel Corporation haspurchased any Bessemer pig during the past week for May delivery. We understand that the cor poration Is now producing pig Iron at the rate of 175,000 tons per week, or more than ever before In Its history. From nearly all the main distributing markets comes the complaint of dullness In pig Iron, but with little actual pressure to selL The contract for the first lot of castings for the Pennsylvania tunnel has not yet been placed. Some leading founders have prac tically withdrawn, 'because they decline to meet the prices which it Is estimated have been named. Rumors have It that $27 a net ton for the finished tunnel sections has been bid. The cast iron pipe trade is quite busy. Among the larger work which Is being figured on is 15,000 tons for Cincinnati. Employment In the heavier lines of finished Iron and steel continues light, and yet the tonnage of steel which gooa Into consumption is enormous. It Is stated that the leading interest is producing from 185,000 to 187,000 tons of ingots per week, against a record In the boom days of rail, plate and beam con sumption of 21G.000 tons In one week. This Is due to the enormous demand in the lighter products. Wire has had some record months lately, and even though It is pretty sure to fall off, now that the Spring demand Is drawing to a close, it will take full work for two months at the mills to put broken stocks at distributing centers Into normal 6hape. The tonnage of sheet is much better than it has been, but prices are somewhat Irreg ular. EASTERN LIVESTOCK. Prices Current at Chicago, Omaha and Kansas City. CHICAGO. April 28. Exchange Brokers While Away the Time Playing Pranks-Erie's Earnings Decreased. NEW YORK. April 2& The listless dealing to which the stock market Is becoming accus tomed was again notably In evidence today. The boardroom was practically Idle during the latter part of the day and brokers were driven to while the time away with such pranks as brokers are prone to. With money to be had on almost nominal terms, there is no pressure on anybody to sell stocks to realize cash, and no one not forced to do eo would attempt to make the holdings In such a narrow market. On the other hand, there seems to be nothing In the conditions or pros pects that can Induce the buying of stocks. In spite of the abundant facilities to be had in the way of borrowed money. The conse quence is the deep lethargy of capital which the market is witnessing. with puzzled guesses as to how and when It may end. Indications aro plain that the outgo of gold will continue on a heavy scale, as supplies are redundant and Paris la calling home her capital from all available quarters. The sterling rate at Paris sank to 25 francs 10 centimes today, thus widening the margin of profit on gold shipments from New York, in spite of an easier tendency on sterling here The payment of the $10,000,000 to the Panama government was also announced from Washington, but no effect was produced in the local money market. Yet the market Is obviously sensitive to the offering of any fresh claims on capital resources. Projected capital Issues are known to be large, Includ ing the funding of much of the temporary not Issues now outstanding for railroad com panies. It Is believed that many of tho projected Issues will have claims on earnings ahead of those now outstanding, and this un doubtedly Is one of the most repressing features of the present Issue. The decrease of $670,000 in Erie's net earn ings for March weakened the stocks of that company and had a dampening effect on tho wbolo list of railroads. Amalgamated Cop per, which sold ex-dlvldend. was lifted nearly a point and Anaconda Jumped six points. Tho weather news was favorable to crop pros pects, but was of little effect on stocks. There was some pressure on United States Steel preferred, but the stock recovered to a shade above last night. Tho market closed stagnant. Bonds were neglected and about steady. Total sales par value, $2,075,000. United States bonds wero unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Sales. High. Low. Close.
