PULPIT DECLAEED VACANT
But Congregation Will Probably Re
tain Rev. J. H. Gibson.
The action of the presbytery of Oregon,
-which met at Oakdale, Or., In declaring
vacant the pulpit of the Grand-Avenue
Presbyterian Church and thus deposing
Rev. J. H. Gibson, is seriously resented
by the majority of members of that
church. Accusations -were made against
Rev. Mr. Gibson some months ago -which
were the cause of much strife and con
tention between the two factions Into
which the congregation -was divided, but
the matter was finally settled and it was
supposed that the handshaking and bury
ing the hatchet -which ensued was m
good faith. It now appears, however,
that the still waters have been deeper
than usual and the old enemies have
never ceased to work on their plans of
ousting him from the church.
The large majority of the congregation
are determined to retain their pastor at
any cost, and they are In a position to
do so as the church Is maintained by the
Home Missionary Society ana not by the
presbytery. This will enable them to
disband and immediately reorganize, and
this will probably be aone. Both Rev.
Mr. Gibson and his wife are very popular
with the members of the church, and a
movement of this kind will not be a
surprise to any acquainted with, the con- j
aiuons. vev. jut. iiD3ou wuum not uut
for publication on his return last night.
Frenchman Sent to the Asylum.
HIIilSBORO, Or., April 15. (Special)
Ieger Fougeron, a Frenchman, was last
evening examined for insanity and sent
to the Asylum this morning. Fougeron
was picked up by the officers the other
evening and when searched, had $100 on
his person. He is subject to epilepsy
and Imagines he Is going to be hanged.
In conversing in his own language he
kept repeating tnat he was guilty and
that he was ready to die, and asked that
the rope be brought.
Fougeron carries a poll tax receipt
from Flathead County, Montana, bearing
date of May, 1903. He also has a medal
from the French Government hospital
service for the years 1895 and 18S6.
