12 THE MORNING OEEGONIAN, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1904. REVEL IN PROSPERITY RUSSIAN COLONISTS NUMEROUS IN WHITMAN COUNTY. They Bought Land Which Had Been Abandoned to Squirrels-Hate the Motherland, and Are Americans. ENDICOTT, "Wash.. Feb. 15. (Special.) It la safe to say that this city and" the surrounding country has been taken "by the Russians, as hundreds of them have settled here in the past five years. Ten years ago this country produced nothing but squirrels. It was impossible for the American farmers to raise -wheat, as the squirrels "would get'away with It before harvest time. The country was practi cally abandoned by the Americans when the Russians came over and began set tling it. They purchased the land at a very low figure and about that time the squirrels were exterminated by a disease that got among them and the Russians have had clear sailing. They raise from 25 to 35 bushels of wheat to the acre, and their land Is now considered as produc tive as any In Whitman County and com mands today from $40 to $50 an acre. But little Interest is taken here by the Russians in the war between" Japan and the mother country. jMany of them openly declare their hope that Japan will win. One of the more intelligent men of the colony said he hoped the Japs would give the mother country a sound threshing. He further said: "I at one time, when a small boy, saw my grandfather tied up by the thumbs in a public square, his cloth ing stripped off and his bare back hor ribly whipped with a knotted rope until he fainted from loss of blood. The blood ran down his back in streams and I had to hide my face and cry- This was the punishment my poor old grandfather re ceived because he did not happen to have the money to pay his taxes. An exorbi tant tax Is levied upon all Russian farm ers, and that Is the penalty Imposed on the man who is unlucky enough to be without the money to pay them when they become due. I was put in the Czar's army when but a small boy and treated much worse than an American would treat his dog. All Russian soldiers are treated that way. and for this reason they have no love for the mother country and will not fight, as you Americans would, or even as the Japs will, and you can tell your paper that the "Whitman County Russians hope the Japs will win in this war. Tou can -also say that the Russians are all taking out their naturalization papers and expect soon to be full-fledgea American citizens, and we will always be true to the American flag that stands for liberty." ANTI-TOXIN SAVES MANY. Chicago Death Rate Shows Reduction of Sixty-Three Per Cent. CHICAGO. Feb. 15. Proof that anti toxin saves hundreds of lives each year In Chicago is offered by the health depart ment in Its weekly bulletin. The use of anti-toxin In the treatment of diphtheria was oegun by the city nine years ago, and since that time the mortality has been GOSS, while during the! nine years before 11, 4SS persons died. The decrease has been 5400, or 47 per cent, while the population Increased nearly CO0.O00, or 52 per cent. Considering population, the decrease in deaths is given as (3 per cent. The recent action of manufacturers in creasing the price of the serum to 5L33 for 1000 units led the department to ascertain the cost of manufacture, which, It de clares, Is less than 20 cents.
