THE BANKING HOUSE of Ladd & Bush was organ
ized byAsahel Bush, of Salem, in theyear 1868,
who furnished one-half of the stock or capital,
the other half being taken by the firm pf Ladd & TII
ton, at that time composed of the late W. S. Ladd,
together with A. E. and C. E. Tllton of New York
City. It was the first bank In the Northwest outside
of Portland, and was open for business early in 1869.,
or thirty-five years ago. The first depositor was
Dr. H. Carpenter, who was well known over Oregon,
and the signature books of the bank, so to speak, are
autograph albums of the pioneers and the early busi
ness men of the Willamette Valley as well as those
of the present date. The signature of many an old
deed or will has been verified by reference to their
pages.
In 1883 the firm of Ladd & Bush liquidated, Mr.
Bush continuing the businpss, however, under the
same name. In 1900 he took Into partnership his
son A. N. Bush. The growth of the bank and the
growth of the middle Willamette Valley are propor
tionally the same.
The deposits at the end of the first year were
about $100,000; they at this time run Into the mil
lions, an Index to the prosperity of Oregon and the.
confidence In which the bank is held by the people.
The management of the bank has been along conserv
ative lines. It has granted its clients all the courte
sies accorded by an obliging and carefully conducted
house. Even In 1893 and the subsequent years of
panic Its customers were not denied reasonable privi
leges, and aid was 'extended to a number of other
banks.
The bank from ts start has kept rank among the
substantial and strongest of the-Northwest.
