An Incident occurred in connection with the presen tation of the key of the city to the Queen of the Carnival by Mayor William which was very amusing, not to the Mayor, but to everybody who knew it. A large, hand some key, covered with gold (foil) had been prepare for the occasion and as the time for making the presentation ap proached and the key did not arrive, the Mayor became uneasy. City Treasurer "Werleln, who sat near him, told him not to worry ae the key would certainly arrivis in time. It did not, however, and the Mayor searched his pockets to And a gold key, or anything that could be. passed for one, but said he hadn't even a gold tooth pick. He applied to Werleln for assist ance and he dove down into his pants pocket after the big brass key of his treasure vault, but found to his sorrow that he had left his keys, knife and purse in his "other" pantaloons. The Mayor be gan to look as if he wished he had not shipped, when Werleln bethought him of his gold matchbox, and at once presented It to the Mayor as the only available eub stltute for the gold key. The time for the presentation having arrived, the Mayor collected his energies, and, saying to the Queen: "Now, I, as Mayor, present you. on behalf of the citizens of Portland, with . the key to our fair city," laid the match box in her hand. The Queen, who had seen the gorgeously gilded and berlbboned key intended for her, nearly fainted, but thinking that perhaps the golden case contained a golden key, recovered her composure and was able to listen to ftie reply of Mr. Werleln to the Mayor's ad dress without even turning pale. It was round that the chairman of the .com mittee appointed to furnish the key for the Mayor to present had gone "to see a man" and had stayed too long, and he now holds the key to this lair city. Peed s Hoas and Chickens on Brick bats. Of course everybody knows that poultry of all kinds have gizzards Instead of stomachs, and require to have access to gravel in their stomachs to help digest their food. Many, . however, are not aware that hogs have their digestion much 'benefitted by being fed on brick bats, and that pounded brick is also very beneficial to chickens. The brickbats are not to be Administered to the hogs in the old fashioned way x)f '"eave arf a brick nt 'Im," but a cartload at a time if the bats are to be placed where the hogs can get at them and they will not last long. E. Everdlng has been fattening hogs in an almost -exclusive diet of brickbats with great success and by mixing cracked bones with pounded brickbats has made chickens so fat that they could not walk. He says he secured the recipe from S. A. Stansberry. who fattened hogs for the Keokuk, la., market on brickbats and a little corn with such success that h'e lifted a mortgage as big as a 12-quarter blanket on "the old farm." Mr. Everdlng has found several persons who cannot believe that hogs or chickens will thrive and fatten on brickbats and he is fattening a large nock of chickens for these people Just to convince them that the theory is all right House Settles and Causes Repairs. A gang of workmen are employed on a handsome building, constructed only two or three years ago, taking the marble wainscoting along the halls of the upper stairs off, drilling holes for screws near the upper end and again fastening them to tne wooding studding. When asked what this meant they explained that the building had settled an inch or two, owing to the shrinking of the green timbers in the framework and studding. When asked jphy holes had to be drilled through the marble slabs to fasten them on, they said the architect had used concrete anchorage in construction. In this way the marble slabs were fastened to the studs by con cealed wires, one end of which was fast ened in a hole in the corner of the slab and the other In the stud. The workmen remarked that green timber and marble finish did not fadge welL To Float on White Wings. A man whose family are going to the coast was met by a friend yesterday, with a parcel In his hand and said: "What do you sup pose there is in that?" "Give it up," was the reply; "what la it?" In the production of which it "beat the world." The apples and the girls are as roseate and plentiful as ever, but Oregon now beats the world in so many things that they are not now so boasted about as they used to be. Among the many things in which Oregon beats the world are roses, strawberries, salmon, prunes, quinces, potatoes, in short all sorts- of fruits and vegetables, arid especially cherries. The Royal Anne has long stood at the head of .the cherries of the whole world and there are several other varie ties which surpass any other cherry ex cept the Royal Anne Now E. E. Mal lory, who has a fruit ranch Just east of town, has originated a cherry which it is not unlikely may surpass the Royal Anne It is away ahead of it In several good qualities, but has not reached its full development yet as the first fruit was picked from the tree a few dags ago. It is one of the prettiest and sweetest cher ries ever known, somewhat lighter col ored than the Royal Anne, but much more evenly colored and beautifully plump and glossy. The seedling tree grew up -under a Black Republican tree probably from one of Its fruit Mr. Mallory has not yet decided on a name for It and is as par ticular about this as some in naming their first child. He will spare no pains to de velop this promising seedling to full per fection. George A. Steel has also a new cherry brought from Colorado which is very fine in all respects, except that It is deficient in color, being almost white and so is not likely to be a good seller. People do not take kindly to colorless fruits, as the white strawberry and the pale -yellow raspberry which no one stops to look at If Mr. Mallory's cherry sur passes the Royal Anne and the hits on a good name for It he will be Immortalized. The weather is warm in Japan and Mr. Dosch eays he is living on a steamboat and does not find this Russian luxury very enjoyable when dressed. If he could go dressed, or rather undressed, as the natives do, it would be quite jolly. He says his mission, both commercially and diplomatically,- has been a success, at least is gratifying to him. whether pleasing to those who are to reap the results xf his labor or not Young's Cafe, corner Twelfth and Washington, two blocks north of Empire Theater, and one block east of Shields' Park, will be open for inspection today. Seated on a small board, which was the only thing be tween him and death, a work man yesterday morning renewed the gold-leaf covering of the great ball which surmounts the flagstaff on top of The Oregon ian building's tower. The height of the tower is 190 feet and the flagstaff, on the outer corner, Is 50 feet long. The workman "shinned" up the flagstaff, fixed the tackle which supported hte narrow seat settled himself thereon and with his legs en twined about the flagstaff,' calm ly went to work. The Job was a delicate one, requiring -nearly an hour to complete, during which time crowds gathered on the streets below and watched the bold workman with breathless interest The workman's name Is Frank Wiggins. He la a native of New Tork City. He was superintend ent of flagstaffs at the Columbia Exposition, and there made an international reputation. He did the difficult and dangerous work on the Masonic Temple, at Chi cago, and has performed marvel ous aerial feats in New Tork and other cities of. the United States. He has made his way across the continent enameling steel smokestacks and painting flagpoles. He ascends a pole and keeps himself in place while at work by a simple rope device,, which holds him securely. He says that at the present time he knows of but one other man on the Pacific Coast who makes a specialty of his line of work. Through Train Service and Cheap Excursion Rates Via the A. & C. R. R. Tickets on sale at 248 Alder street and Union Depot Value of a Good Reputation. As showing the benefit of having a good reputation to berry growers it may be stated that a housekeeper was seen yes terday looking about a market in search of berries- for canning. She was advised by the dealer to take a case of Logan berries. "Will I find them all right when I open the case?" she asked, "i'ou may depend upon that," was the reply. "The reason I asked," said she, "was because I saw ia The Oregonian that a woman who bought currants and raspberries by the case found some.of the boxes but lit tle more than half 'full, and In others many spoiled berries In boxes which had been used before and were not cleaned." "These berries," said the .dealer, "ore from the Magoon fruit farm, and he had a reputation for packing his fruit prop erly and never used boxes a second time." "That Is all right" said the woman. "I have dealt a great deal with Mr. Magoon, and always found him as honest as the day Is long and, although he Is gone now, I am willing to take the berries on the strength of the good reputation he earned and which his successors will. I have no doubt endeavor to maintain." This shows that the good men do does not always die with them. All fruit packers will find it beneficial to earn a reputation for honesty.
