of the Government crop report, showing the
present average condition of . cotton to he
74 1, compared with 95 last year, the cotton
market here was thrown into a great state
of excitement. The Immedate effect was an
advance of 0 to 10 points, after -which the
market become easier tinder realizing.

Government Cotton Crop Report.
WASHINGTON', Jaune 4. The cotton bulletin
of the Department of Agriculture was issued
today as follows:
"The statistician of the Department of Ag
riculture estimates the total area planted in
cotton in the United States at 27.007.000 acres,
an Increase of 1,029,000 acres, or 3.7 per cent
upon the acreage planted last year. The aver
age condition of the growing crop on May
23 was 74.1, as compared with 05.1 on May
26. 1002; S1.5 on May 20. 1001, and a ten
year average of 80,0. The condition now re
ported is for the cotton belt as a whole and
forthe States of Georgia, Alabama and Texas
In particular, the lowest condition ever report
ed at this eeason of the year. The crop almost
everywhere is from ten to 21 days late.

"Will Replenish Montana Ran,scs.
WEISER, Idaho, June 4. (Special.)-About
1000 head of cattle were shipped from Welser
to Montana yesterday. They were purchased In
this county by M. K. Tarsons. of Salt Lake
City. They are to replenish the ranees of
Montana, where the losses were so heavy.

Review, discussing market conditions In Its
current issue, tcys:
A quiet week in iron and steel has followed
the United Bessemer pig Iron offered by
merchant furnaces on a basis of $18.50 at fur
nace. Whatever activity in foundry Iron might
have corne from this impulse was lost In view
of the pending meeting of the Associated
Southern furnaces at Birmingham. A two days'
conference ended on Thursday with the an
nouncement that the following new prices
had been agreed upon by a reduction of $2.50
from the schedule promulgated April 1: No.
1 foundry Birmingham, $15.50; No. 2 foundry,
$15; No. 3 foundo $14.50; No. 4 foundry,
$14; graytorge, $13.75; mottled, $13.50; white.
$13. The $1 differential was abolished and
Eastern and Western markets are now on the
same basis.
The furnaces represented were those of the
Tennessee Coal. Iron and railroad companies;
Sloss Sheffield Steel & Iron Company; Ala
bama Consolidated Coal St. Iron Company;
Virginia Iron, Coal & Coke Company; Repub
lic Steel Company; Roanoke Iron Company;
Citlco Furnace Company. Lacey Buck Iran
Company, and the Chattanooga Furnace Com
pany. The fact that so-called Independent South
ern furnaces in some instances have asked
from 50 cents to $1 above the $15 basis and
have recently booked business for most of the
thrd cuarter at prices scaling down from
$10.50 at Birmingham for No. 2, has evident
ly led association furnaces to believe that
buyers roust now come to them for the third
Quarter Iron. As compared with the contract
prices of a year ago, the new basis repre
sents an advance of from 25 cents to 50 cents,
comparing it with the contract price of last
Fall for iron for the first quarter of 1003.
It is a reduction of $1 a ton.
The continued 'heavy consumption of foun
dry iron and the full shipments under exist
ing contracts support the expectation of a
buying movement within the next month. An
othe'r consideration is that contracts for cast
ings which have been held up awaiting bet
ter prices for pis Iron may now be placed.
The labor situation has been cleared somewhat
in the week particularly, at Chicago, and this
may have some effect on the foundry trade. As
far as actual business Is concerned, the week
has been one of the dullest of the year In all
lines.

NEW YORK. June. 4. Yesterday's late re
action was taken as a, demonstration of the
futility of the effort made earlier In tie day
to put up prices and professional operators
this morning proceeded to throw over such
holdings as they had taken on In the ex
pectation of an upturn of prices. There was
not much in the news of the day having a
bearing on values. The weakness of the mar
ket increased aa the day progressed and be
fore the elose took on the appearance t
forced liquidation when was In evdenee ear
lier n the week. A number of the Canadian
.group showed a tendency tto recover from
the extreme depression caused by the Cana
dian financial dlfficultes of Tuesday, but
there was Eome apprehension that after ef
fects of those troubles were to be feared at
other points.
The greatest selling pressure today con
verged in Amalgamated Copper, of which
thousand of shares were thrown upon the
market with seeming" disregard of what prices
tbey would bring. The stock touched 52 short
ly before the close, an extreme decline of 5
points for the day, and lVf points lower than
ever before in the history of the company. The
urgency of the selling without news affecting
the property gave, rise to dlsqulctng rumors
as to the necessity which could Induce such
heavy liquidation. Much of the selling was
ild to be for Boston account and rumors
were circulated of a process of loan con
traction at that center, following the collapse
in Canadians. American Smelting also showed
e-idence of pressure. The personality of the
brokers employed In this selling caused the
movement to be associated with the pool
which Is understood to have operated both in
Amalgamated and In the market for the metal.
Another influental factor In causing dis
couragement was the free selling of Pennsyl
vania throughout the day. The stock touched
1234. a decline for the day of 1 and 1
below the previous low record. This compares
with the subscription price to stockholders,
which has also been underwritten by a syn
dicate at 130. The liquidation of this stock
caused a bad Impression upon sentiment all
around. The flurry In the call money market
to 4 late in the day was evidence that there
was urgent requirements, to be met.
The incident of the day was the evidence of
support for the United States Steel stocks.
large buying orders being furnished fey houses
formerly acting for the steel syndicate. But
the reports from be iron 'rade had some in
fluence in depressing stocks generally. The
reports that the steel narket Is growing
easier were received with anxiety. The calling
of a convention of anthracite miners to con
sider a strike was naturally depressing. The
strength of thtr grain markets, an unfavorable
report from the Missouri Agricultural De
partment and the unprecedently low condition
of cotton reported by the Government were ef
fective influences in the weakness. The market
closed weak but active and practically at the
lowest.

DULLISH CROP REPORTS.
CHICAGO, June 4. Wheat ruled decidedly
strong and trading was active with a large
volume of business. The opening prices for
July were c to c up at 75c to 75K&
and after selling at 74375c shortly after the
opening, prices 5teadly advanced. The exclt;
lng causes were the strength at St. Louis
and the extremely bullish character of the
Missouri State crop report, which showed a
loss of 17 per cent In the crop during the
past month. Damage reports from Nebraska
and Kansas were also in evidence and helped
to create anxiety among shorts, while the
strength in com was another bull factor.
After selling at 76c July closed at 73c, a
nit gain of lc.
Heavy buying of July corn by prominent
commissions-houses and the generally bullish
sentiment among local traders caused an ad
vance of over a cent In that dellverr, while
other months were also strong, but the demand
was pot so urgent for the more distant mOnths.
Strong cables and. the bullish crop reports were
the chief bull factors. After selling between
47c and 49o. July closed llo higher at
4846T4c
The uncertainty of 'the crop prospects and
the strength In corn brought out a big com-mlsslon-house
demand for oats, while shorts
covered freely, resulting in a strong market.
Aside from the steady demand and light of
ferings the market was featureless. The close
was strong with July c higher at 35Jc,
after selling between S4Tc and 3frc
Heavy receipts of hogs, together with a de
cline In prices at the yards, caused provi
sions to start weak and lower, but the
strength In grains brought out buyers and the
market turned strong. There was a good de
mand for packers as well as a fair commission,
house demand. Fair realizing near the close
caused a slight reaction. September pork closed
2o lower, lard unchanged and ribs were down

Grain closed easier after an early advance.
The official statement of stocks of flour and
.grain remaining in California. Issued this af
ternoon, shows large decreases In everything
except barley and beans, which, increased
slightly over last year. Feed stuffs and
choice hay were firm.
Fruits were active. Choice cherries were
firm under good shipping demand. Apricots
were in ample receipt and easier. Southern
figs we.-e in less supply and steadier. Green
apples were abundant and weak. Some In extra
large boxes or bow arc arriving. The first
green Madelalne pears were received and sold
well. Strawberries were steady for best of
ferings. The first blackberries from Newcastle
arrived. Other berries and currants were plen
tiful and weaker. Good oranges were In light
supply and firm. Lemons were In sharp de
mand for Alaskan shipment.
Choice old potatoes were scarce and much
stronger. Oreion Burbanks, ex-steamer Elder,
sold up to $1.12 on the dock. Fine new po
tatoes were higher. Onions were quiet and
steady. The first new egg plant arrived. Cu
cumber were scarcer and higher. Tomatoes
and rhubarb were Arm. Other green vegeta
bles were' in good supply and easier.
Poultry was firm, except ducks and geese. A
carload of Eastern Is on sale. The butter
market was well protected by large dealers
and steady. Cheese was firmer. Eggs were
firm. Receipts. 104.000 pounds butter, "6,000
pounds cheese, 4S.000 dozen eggs.
