NEW YORK, March 13. R. G. Dun & Co.'s
weekly review of trade tomorr6w will eay:
Reports from all' sections of the country
promise a brick Spring and Summer trade.
Orders are examine forward on a large scale,
and frequent requests fdr Spring shipments In
dicate that stocks are low and requirements
urgent.
The statement has b&cn made repeatedly of
late that traffic blockades were' ended, but as
a matter of fact the relief was In every case
of a local nature, and was almost Immediately
followed by so much new business that con
Kestlon returned. At present, the "Western
shipments are fairly prompt, but freight Is
not coming East In a satisfactory manner.
Heavy distribution of wages makes retail
trade active and, prompt In the anthracite re
gions, yet dealers are carrying small stocks of
merchandise as' a rule. Activity In building
lines is bo great as to occasion frequent com
ments. Bad weather retarded retail business
&t some points, and floods added to the dis
turbed condition of the cotton market.
Railway earnings continue to exceed previous
years figures, roads reporting for the first
wtek of March showing a gain of 14.1 per cent
over last year, and of 1C.3 per cent over 1901.
It is already' almost certain that construction
will far exceed even last year's enormous fig
ures, and similar conditions exist as to build
ing and bridge operations; despite the higher
range of quotations prevailing abroad. Note
worthy strength again appeared In the minor
materials, and principally In copper, which
, rea. hed the highest point since 1801.
Failures this week numbered 130 In the
1'n.ted States, against 232 last year, and 22 In
Canada, against 3 a year ago.

CLOSE TO RECORD LEVELS.
Staple Prices Stroni? Under Active
Demand.
NEW YORK. March 13. Bradstrecfs tomor
row w:I! say;
Demand is active, with staple prices strong
at t'.ose to record levels, despite drawbacks In
the shape of bad roads, labor troubles East
and V est. and heavy rains, overflowing rivers
and backward farm preparations at the South.
The continued reports of slow and even poor
cil.ee t Ions noted ror some time past are ac
centuated, perhaps partly the result of the bad
condition of the country roads consequent upon
the change In the season. Labor troubles, pres
ent and prospective, especially harass butlding
trades costuming iron and steel in the metrop
olis. The traffic congestion, though Improved.
etUl affects the transportation of coke, lumber,
flcur and grain. Railroad earnings are-simply
magnificent for this time of the year, the coun
try receipts In February showing gains of 14
per cent In gross, the March returns being as
Javorafc'.e. Export trade showed a very notable
gain In February In many lines, -but particu
larly In the shipment of corn and cotton.
Retail business generally has been checked
by weather conditions, but this has not mili
tated against business with Jobbers. The lum
ber trade continues active the country over.
Prices are firmer at close to top quotations!
The much feared shock to trade, caused by
past heavy advances In staple prices, as yet
ias failed to materialize. The present level of
commodity rrtces Is at the highest point
reached In three years. February's movement
was very generally upward. New features are
the expansion noted in the demand for crude
and finished Iron, and steel, a very heavy ad
vance In the price -of copper, .higher quotations
for lead, firmer cotton and wide fluctuations
and w;de. steady cereal prices.

NETV YORK, March 13. Sentiment in "Well
street-took on a more cheerful tone again to
day, and aa upward tendency of prices was in
force. The movement did not display much vi
tality, and was mostly centered In a -few stocks,
especially "Wabash. It had tor Its particular
basis the fact that professional - traders found
that .they could bid up prices above the existing
level without being overwhelmed with offerings
brought out in consequence.
This evidence of the cessation of the pressure
to liquidate, which has been a burden on the
market for several days, led to the indulgence
of a hope that the' bank statement tomorrow
would be more favorable than has been expect
ed, la view of the continued heavy drain this
week upon cash resources. The quietness of
the money market forestalled this bepe It is
not unusual for the special demand for loans
Incident to the carrying over of stocks from
Friday until Monday to cause a flurry in the
call loan market on a Friday. Today It was
feared that the preparation for the payment of
the $20,000,000 of Standard Oil dividends on
Monday would aggravate this tendency. On the
contrary, the money market was notablyt calm,
until 7 per cent was paid In the last five
minutes. Traders were disposed to reason that
the position of the banks must be better than
supposed. It was considered possible, also, that
the proceeds of the Standard Oil dividend must
be coming into the market by anticipation.
Rumors were renewed of Intended measures
of money market relief by the Treasury De
partment, and it was alleged that the presence
in Washington of J. P. Morgan was for the
purpose of urging such measures. The pro
posed measure took form In the rumors of the
redemption prior to maturity for outstanding 5
per cent bonds of the Government. This issue,
of which there is $19,395,050, still outstanding,
matures February 1, 1904. The rumor met wltlj
denials In 'Washington.
Much .discussion was given also to a report
that both houses of Congress would be called
in extra session early In the Fall to ratify the
Cuban reciprocity treaty and also to act on the
Aldrlch financial bill or some similar .measure
The upward bound In Sugar was In response
to this rumor. The effect of these rumors,
which were all without foundation, was evi
dence of the primary Importance still attached
to tho money situation In the speculative out
look. A sharp reaction in the London market
after the recent violent advance was the occa
sion of some profit-taking In Amalgamated Cop
per. This was well absorbed, and did not cause
more than 1U decline In the stock at any time
The bringing of a suit by the Southern Pacific
pool Interests to enjoin the Union Pacific from
voting Its holding of Southern Pacific and the
granting of the injunction had little effect on
the prices of those stocks, but rather quieted
the speculation in them. The reaction in the
last hour seemed due to profit-taking on the
day's advance by room traders, although the
rise in the call money rate to 6tf -per cent
after noon was an added Influence. The bidding
up of the rate .to 714 per cent by belated bor
rowers Just before the close was not given
much significance.
Tho loss in cash to the Subtreasury tor the
week of $4,405,000 was offset by the receipt of
only a few hundred thousand dollars on bal
ance from the interior. If tomorrow's bank
statement accurately reflects these movements
In the cash Item there must have been a loan
contraction of more than $12,000,000 to have
pre-ented inroads upon the legal reserve re
quired of the banks.
The bond market was dull and Irregular.
Total sales, par value, $2,205,000. United States
bonds were all unchanged on the last call.
