Refined sugar in the East declined lOccn
barrels and 13c on racks. Pacific Coast -markets
were not affected yesterday by the change.
The New York Journal of Commerce of Jan
uary 31 quoted an authority on sugar as fol
lows: Sugars have been accumulating rapidly at
the Cuban seaports, nt come of which there
are very limited storage facilities, and many
planters are obliged to realize on their crops
to obtain funds. The qnestlon Is now one of
supply and demand. The refiners have full
stocks, while their requirements for meltings
are smaller than at the same time last year,
and a further reduction In meltings will be
necessary next week.ln consequence of the light
aemand for refined. If offerings continue, as
St present, in greater volume than the refiners
can care for. we may expect a further moder
ate decline. It would seem, however, that the
cedlno should soon be checked, otherwise It
would pay to ship the Cuban and West Indian
sugars to -England It the European markets re
main steady.

REVIEW OF TUB IRON' TRADE.
Steel Trust's Orders' tbe Larirestt n
Its Illatorr.
NEW YORK. Feb. 6. Referring to the Iron
and steel situation, the Iron Age says:
Preliminary meetings havajeen held by Inde
pendent .Lake ore, producers which Indicate that
there will be an advance possibly on Mesaba
ores' to 33.50 for non-Bessemer and to 34.50 for
Bessemer, and on old-rango ores to 34.75 for
Bessemer and 34 for non-Bessemer. Tho scale
has not yet been definitely fixed, however.
In the foundry iron markets, buying; continues
on a moderate scale, consumers adhering to
the belief that they can only gain by waiting.
Still there Is tbe very Important fact that con
sumption does not seem affected by. the higher
cost of Iron to the founders, who generally
represent business very active.
Advices from abroad radicate a strengthening
all along the line, the amount of business In
Germany particularly being on the Increase.
Some cargoes ot Mlddlesboro have been pur
chased by Importers but this Is due to shifting
caused by disappointment In deliveries from
other foreign producers.
At home the freight blockade Is still aa se
rious as ever. It Is understood that conferences
are taking place In the Central West between
some of the leading producers and the railroad
officials.
The first weekly report of the constituent
companies ot the United States Steel Corpora,
tlon shows an Aggregate of orders of 8,608 000
tons, the largest In the history of tbe organ
ization. Tbe bookings In structural material,
plates, rails and wire are very heavy as is
well known, but It Is Interesting to note that
the movement In tlnplate. too. has been heavy
during January.
In the pipe trade two rather Important lines
are tote equipped In the Pittsburg district this
year. Each calls for about 15,000 tons of pipe.
It may be noted that some of the independent
manufacturers of merchant pipe have been
withdrawing the lowest figures and the line Is
better.
The foreign steel markets have decidedly stif
fened up during the past week. Importers are
asking I2S828J10 ex. ship, and moderate sales
at that range have been made. An order for
10,000 tons ot steel rails for a large delivery
on the Pacific Coast has gone abroad because of
the Inability of the domestic mills to make the
desired deliveries.
An Interesting movement has been the buy
ing of several thousand tons of foreign three to
eight-Inch rounds for shafting manufacture.
The Imported material Is sold at practically
the regular base price, but without extras. A'
good deal of this material goes Into W Eng
land. In the sheet trade there are sUIl complaints
of cutting prices, and to some extent' this Is
true also in tlnplate.

STOCK MARKET CAMPAIGN
3IOVC rJEGUX TO REVIVE SPECULA
TION AT SEW YOniC
United1 .States Steel Shnrcs Advance
on Knvornble Decision Humored
Merger ot Hock Island and V. P.
NEW YORK. Feb. 6. The aggregate dealings
In stocks roe to above 750.000 shares. The
market was broad and at times very active,
and also gave a general impression of strength
and advancing prices. That this Impression
was to some extent illusory Is manifest from
the small and ragged showing of net gains for
the day. Whereas at one time a large number
of leading active stocks were a point or more
above last night's closing, the last prices for
tbe day were In all cases materially below
the best, while In many Instances the earlier
gains were wiped out. and finally prices were
below those of last nlghL Tho skilled leader
ship of the market may safely be Inferred from
this showing, and It Is not a rash assumption
that professional manipulation afso played a
part In the price movement. ' a
It Is evident, however, that operators In
stocks with large resources and with an exten
sive organization for the purpose have ven
tured upon a stock-market campaign for an
advance In prices. There Is no evidence yet
that the leadership thus undertaken has been
effective In attracting any large outside busi
ness. There was some Increase In commission
house business, and the later downward course
of prices warranted the presumption that the
professional operators were taking advantage
ot this demand to realize profits. The prevail
ing ease of money is the dominant motive for
the reviving ot speculation, although the low
rates to which call loans have fallen are. In
part, a result ot the recent stagnation ot specu
lative demands.
The leading feature ot today's market was tbe
announcement of the decision of the New Jer
sey court In favor of the right of the United
States Steel Corporation to convert a part of
Its preferred stock Into bonds. The preferred
advanced strongly after the decision became
known. Earlier, the Readings were the lead
ers, and their upward movement was said to
be due to the expectation that the first pre
ferred stock Is to be restored to the 4 per cent
dividend list and the voting trust dissolved,
now that the control Is definitely lodged In the
hands of the Lake Shore and the Baltimore &
Ohio. It was thought possible also that the
heavy liquidation of the minority Interest which
followed this fixture of control had resulted in
the creation ot a large short Interest, which
was driven to cover yesterday and today. It
was very noticeable that the- large concurrent
buying ot Erie and Ontario & Western resulted
In a very slight price movement.
The Pacifies and Southwestern moved up In
company, and this advance was attributed to
a belief that the agreement arrived at between
the Rock Island and the Union Paclflo author
ities would be a benefit to the whole railway
system In that part ot the country. Wabash
had the special benefit ot the perfecting ot Its
franchise to enter Pittsburg. I"roflt-taklng was
in evidence all day in Amalgamated Copper; In
spite ot the reported strength of other copper
stocks In the Boston market, and Sugar was
carried down sharply on the announcement ot
a cut In the refined product. Rock Island also
seemed to be under pressure most ot the time,
and did not share in tho early strength In the
grangers. The profit-taking became quite gen
eral at the last, under cover of the late strength
In Steel, and the closing was easy.
The bond market was active and quiet, but
there was some Irregularity In the price move
ment. Total sales, par value, 33,070,000. United
States bonds were all unchanged on the last
call.

CHICAGO, Feb. C Trading In wheat was
rather light, and local longs were disposed to
sell, offerings being quite liberal throughout
the day. The lower cables, both from Liver
pool and Paris, showing a marked decline, were
the chief factor in causing the depression. The
opening was weak, with May off HSHc, at
7887&HC and & further decline to 7Sc was
soon made A fair export demand caused a
rally later to 79!ic but local realising brought
about another decline, and the close was weak,
with May at the low point at 78c a loss ot
Xc
Com ruled steady, in spite ot the weakness
In wheat, but trading was extremely light, and
there was little change In prices. May closed
steady, a shade lover, at 44U44Kc
Oats were dulL A prominent long was a fair
purchaser late In the day, which caused an ad
vance, and May closed Ho higher, at 30ic
Provisions showed a moderate advance early.
Influenced by the .smaller receipts and higher
prices for hogs, but the market failed to hold,
and the close was easier. May pork and lard
closed Tc lower, and ribs were 12a down.

Exhausted Nerve Force.
Frequency; Classification,
Symptoms and Treatment.
Most medical men. according to their
taste and exnerience, come to have a
peculiar Interest In certain diseases; such
an Interest Dr. Talcott has long felt
toward functional diseases ot the nerv
ous system.
Nervous impairment is ono of the
most common departures.' from health.
Our experience is that popular Ideas, at
least upon the subject of remedies, are
vague and erroneous. The causes of
nervous Impairment are ot two kinds.
In the first class 'may be placed sur
roundings and heredity, and In the sec
ond all those countless forms of nerve'
waste which are so common In modern
life, and which may be pretty com
pletely summed up In tbe words "over
work and dissipation."
x Nerve Weakness.
The symptoms of uncomplicated
nerve weakness have lone been familiar
to physicians, but It is only in late
years that their full Import has come
to be well understood. Now, there Is
no other disorder whose history Is more
clear and symmetrical and none whose
treatment Is more clearly Indicated.
WE CURE YOU TO STAY CURED.
