The present port stocks of wheat and Sour do not exceed 1.C50.000 quarters, against 2.000,000 on December 1, while at this time last year the stocks were 2.130,000 quar ters. Nor Is the prospect for the next three months one to favor any Increase, but Is rather the reverse. "We can Judge fairly accurately what can arrive from all other countries than America, so that It may be useful for the trade In America to know how much wheat and flour we expect from there In these three months. Ton wilt see by this that if we are not to Draw further upon our stocks we must receive 4.125.000 quarters from the Atlantic ports of America and Canada In these three months, that Is to say. 2.500.000 bushels per week in - - . . UVUl. AMIS. VI UIUIK, UJI IC.CJO to the United Kingdom, and does not Include the requirements of Continental countries. All the other items in the above table may be re lied upon as being approximately certain. I have merely put 4.123,000 quarters as the quan tity which America and Canada must supply to cover our requirements for the three months. which are estimated at not less than 7.850,000 quarters. Is other words, just as the shipment xrom tne Atlantic ports of America fall below this total so will our stocks by next April de crease, and vice versa. I send this calculation because It shows how etrong the statistical position for the immediate future is. and to what a degreeTlhe making of prices is In tho hands of the holders of wheat in America. The decrease In the South Russian tiort stocks of wheat is attracting some attention. The stocks are now estimated at 750.000 quarters; on November 14 they were 1.1G3.000 Quarters. and on January 14 last year about jmnon quarters, in otner Continental centers the ua-nuur ul wbcai in Burnt is miA i -g so that we find the present European visible supply reduced to 6.875.000 quarters, against 8,610,000 quarters on December 1, which was the highest point of the season, and 7,975,000 Quaners on January i.- last year. FLOUR The market for flour and mlllstuffs of all kinds Is strong, both here and in the Interior. There is a steady local movement under a good demand. In the forelgn.sltuatlon there is nothing new to report. The Inquiry continues good, both from the Orient and the Southern hemisphere. The China steamer sail ing a few days ago carried out 40,020 barrels. worth 1130.084, making the flour shipments to the Orient since the beginning of the year SS.SC2 barrels, of a value of X2S8.800. about three times the amount shipped to that quar ter In the same period last year. There is also a steady movement of flour to San Francisco. HOPS The hop -market Is in a stagnant con dition, with no pressure to trade on the part of either buyers or sellers. None of the local dealers have any Eastern orders, and A. J. Bay, a Portland bopman, who was In Salem yesterday, says he visited every hop office there and found them likewise without orders. So far as can be learned, not a sale has taken place this week. The last business reported was in a range of 25826HC The New York Journal of Commerce of Jan- nary 28 says: Latest mall advices from London show that the imports Into England to January 1 were SO, 377 hundredweight from the Continent and 24.864 hundredweight from the United States. a total of 124,241 hundredweight, of which 432 hundredweight were re-exported, and the exports of British bops Mere 61S2 hundred- weight. According to the ofilclal figures re ceived from Washington, the number of bar rels of beer on which tax was paid during De cember was 3.205,528 barrels, against 2,652,410 barrels same month In J 901. The total for the calendar year 1902 was- 45.004.337 barrels, against 42.508.541 barrels In 1001 and 40,673,712 barrels In 1900. The average annual Increase in the production for the past few years has been S per cent, and should this average be maintained during the present year, the pro duction will amount to between 47,000.000 and 48.000.000 barrels: in fact, some of the trade are figuring on a production for 1903 of 48.000.000 barrels. Receipts of hops at New York continued light, the arrivals thus far this month being unusually small for the period of the crop year, and It was pointed out that the net receipts to date- at this port, etc, the ar rivals minus the exports and those for forward shipment amount to only between 21.000 and 22.000 bales. Latest mall reports from London say that It appears that the official estimate by the English Government of 311,000 hundred weight as the yield of the present English crop was excessive. German mall advices eay that the stock of hops In first hands In Germany and Austria will barely reach 10,000 hundred weight. WOOL-Of Western wools In the East, the American Wool and Cotton Reporter of Jan uary 29 says: Oregon wools continue quiet and without fea ture, although quotations are nominally un changed and firm. Good staple wools are worth about 55c. dean, or 1819o In the grease. California wools are only raoderalsly active, and the business of the week has been confined chiefly to the sale of a few Northern wools at a clean cost of C2S53c Some middle county wool has chanced hands at 4764SC. and there is some Interest still shown In detective stock around a clean cost of a third of a dollar, al though no sizable business has been done. Stocks of California, both on the Pacific Coast and at the Eastern seaboard are unusually small for this time of the year. The Reporter quotes Oregon wools at Eastern seaboard markets as follows: Eastern staple, 18810c per pound; Eastern Oregon choice cloth ing. 15916c; do average. 13814c; do heavy, 1213c; Valley Oregon. No. 1, 20821c: do No. 2. 20321c; do No. 3. 10020c; do lambs; 103170. COUNTRY PRODUCE The cool weather has had the effect of shutting off some of the sup plies from the interior, and as a consequence, poultry and eggs have been scarcer this week. Poultry prices were firmly maintained, mixed coops and hens selling a shade better. Eggs were quoted generally at 25c. and firm at that, though freer receipts yesterday tended to weak en the market. Oregon creamery butter is scarce and stiff at 3032!4c. A car of Eastern butter arrived a few days ago, and another car is. due. High prices In California have prevented dealers from bringing any butter up from that state. FRUITS AND VEGETABLES There has been a scarcity of all kinds of California vege tables, except cabbage, but the market will be relieved today by the arrival of a carlot of cel ery from. Los Angeles. A car of sweet pota toes will alio arrive today. The latter are quoted firm and higher. Potatoes and onions are dull. Oranges and apples constitute the bulk of the fruit now In market. The local supply of apples Is smaller than It has been at any time since the season opened, but there Is plenty of stock still in the country. The market is steady, with an improved demand for the cheaper grades. GROCERIES, MEATS. ETC Grocery Job bers report a fairly good business, with bright prospects for a large Spring trade. No Im portant changes have -taken place during the week except an advance of 10c a pound in nutmegs. Most of the 'articles on the staple list are firm. Tho trade In live and dressed meats has been steady. Mutton and hogs are firm and some what higher. Provisions are unchanged. . PORTLAND MAIIKDT8. . Grain. I'lour, Etc. MOVEMENT LARGE OPERATIONS IX READING OX XEW YOnit MARKET. Stock Advances OTer Two Points Rumors of Union Pacific and Ilock Island Merger. NEW YORK, Feb. 4.' Yesterday's level of activity In stocks was pretty well maintained today, and there was evidence ot considerable strength In the market. The operations seemed to be confined still to professional hands, but the leadership was aggressive and better or ganized than for some time past, and there was evidence of the control of large resources by those operations. It Was the theory of the board-room operators that the action of the market was largely due to the foregathering, of a number of well-known stock, operators at a Southern resort abundantly supplied with special wire service. Included In the gathering is the operator whose name has been associated with the principal stock market sensations for many months past. Whatever the source of the buying, the move ment was snotty and irregular, and the earlier movements were not well maintained. The op erations In Reading were on a growing scale during the day, and It became easily the leader ot the market in the lata dealings, with a rise of over two points' above last night. There was no news to explain the movement beyond the heavy earnings stated to be accumulating in the treasuries of all the coal-carrying rail roads. Announcement was made today ot sev eral postponed steamship sailings on account of delay In securing coal. This was accepted as Illustrating the universal pressure for this product. Whatever the advantage ot such a condition to the coal-carrying roads, it was not considered favorable to the industrial situa tion at large. Semi-official confirmation was given to the as sertion that the Union Pacific and Rock Island had been brought together In some sort of an agreement assuring mutual advantage by Inter change ot business. Nothing definite could be learned ot the scope ot the agreement, but the report was accepted with satisfaction as a sub stantial step in a community ot Interest plan. The publication of this report was probably the cause of the revived rumors that the pro posed merger of the Gould railroad properties was almost ready for announcement. The stocks of various companies affected by these rumors were not among the speculative lead ers or tno oay. There was an opening spurt la ltocic island, but the stock fell back almost Immediately, and was more steady for the rest ot the day. -Union Paclflo was firm, but not active, ana Southern Pacific rose a point In toe late aeanngs. The rise in St. Paul was supposed to be traceable to the same sources as thar In Reading. The strength In Erie com mon was only moderate, but the preferred stocks, especially the second -preferred, made better advances. Amalgamated Copper con tinued to advance on account of the better sentiment In the copper trade. Yesterday's sudden movement In the United States Steel stocks was not followed up today, and those stocks were Inclined to drag. This fact and the failure of the Rock Island stocks to retain their opening gains threw the market Into a condition of hesitation and uncertainty, but the rise in Reading and gains by miscellaneous assortment of minor stocks had a somewhat reassuring effect. Money continued easy. Tho ciubikk was quiet ana steady. .uonas were steadr. Total rales as its nnn United States 2s declined U Ti f rant nn th lu. cs.il. CLOSING STOCK LIST. s?
