CHICAGO, Jan. 27.-Lower cables and re
ceipts that -were considered heavy, especially In
the Southwest, caused a weak opening In -wheat
and local longs unloaded freely. There was a
temporary rally shortly after the start, brought
about by buying by the leading long, and May
sold up to SlS2c, after opening c to
Sc lower, at Sltt&Slc The support was
or.;y momentary, however, and when It was
learned that the chief long Interest was selling
through brokers, there was a wild scramble to
secure profits, and the price broke sharply, tho
law point being reached at 7Sc. Covering by
Charts late In the day caused a slight rally,
but the close was weak and 2&c lower, at
7Dc Tho news was generally bearish, with
the falling oil in" the export demand the prin
cipal Influence.
The volume of business was something enor
mous, it being reported that the leading bull,
J. Ogclcn Armour, disposed of anywhere from
7.000,000 to 15,000,000 bushels, while commis
sion houses -were also heavy sellers. The in
ference was that Armour -was endeavoring to
ebake out the smaller traders, and from the
erpcarance of the market today, it would seem
that te had been successful. The line which
was held by this leading house was purchased
at from 75c up, and estimating his profits at
4c per bushel, which is a conservative figure,
the net profits on the deal, as shown by today's
ealcs, would amount to about $000,000.
Corn was remarkably firm early, considering
the wealniess in wheat, and it was rumored
that the same firm that unloaded the big line
of wheat had taken on a largo line of corn,
later. when wheat started on its last down
ward course, the offerings became very liberal,
and a weak feeling developed, and May closed
54e lower, at 44c
There was only a light trade in oats, and the
-market Fympatblzed with other grains. May
closed USjic lower, at 303 c..
Provisions ruled dull and easier, the liberal
receipts of hogs and lower prices at the yards
contributing to the early weakness, whllo sell
ing by packers added to the decline. Tho close
was weak, with May. pork 22c lower, lard
down, and ribs oft 10c

have not advanced yet. Local stocks are de
creasing, as the bad roads prevent many farm
ers from reaching market.

NEW YORK, Jan. 27. Yesterday's improve
ment in speculative sentiment seemd to be
maintained today, but the trading was at such
a low' ebb of activity that It was futile to try
to measure the significance of the changes. It
is clear that some of the professional traders
sold stocks on Saturday, and bought back yes
terday when they found their fears of an out
break of trouble over the Venezuelan situation
bad not been realized. Today's sales of stocks
were little changed from yesterday. In a few
cases there was buying pf stocks on the
strength of sDecIal developments, but this de
mand did not follow a rise in prices far. and
had very little sympathetic effect upon the gen
eral list.
The firmness of tho coalers was based upon
the report of net earnings of New Jersey Cen
tral for December, showing an Increase over
those of last December of $612,000. Confident
predictions were made that the forthcoming
December roport of Erie would show even bet
ter results. On the other hand, the Atchison's
December reports showed all but $7011 of the
Increase In gross earnings taken by tho en
larged expense account. The rise In American
Smelting was based upon assertions of the very
large current earnings and a heavy surplus
accumulation. Louisville roso on the rumor
that it would benefit In a largely Increased
degree hereafter from the earnings of the Nash
ville, Chattanooga & St. Louis. Amalgamated
was bought on reports of tho acquisition by
the company of mines In Scandinavia and on
the rise in the prlco of copper In London. A
number of low-priced railroad stocks were lift
ed. 1
It has been urged that prices of dividend
paying stocks are at a level where the Invest
ment return Is less attractive than for other
uses of capital. Apparently, the traders are
led to conclude that with stocks thatay no
dividend his objection to higher prices may not"
apply. These are fair examples of the In
fluences which were allowed to affect the mar
ket. Manhattan was under pressure of realiz
ing by those who had bought the stocks for the
privilege of subscribing to the stocks, the right
for which came off for the stock today.
The rise In the money and exchange markets
was without appreciable change. Yesterday's
decline In export buying of wheat as a result
of the higher price was a subject of comment,
and there was keen Interest to learn whether
today's reaction In wheat would lead to renewal
of tho export demand. The character of the
early advanco in stocks was dellned by the
readiness of tho traders to realize. The selling
of tho last hour was a proclamation of weari
ness with tho attempt to get prices up. The
market closed dull and heavy.
The bond market was moderately active, and.
the movemont of prices was Irregular. Total
sales, par value, $2,210,000. United States
bonds wero unchanged on tho last call.

BLAMES THE GOVERNMENT
"Get Coal' Convention Calls for
Action Against Trusts.
WASHINGTON. Jan. 27. The "Get coal"
convention called at a recent meeting In
Detroit assembled here today; A little
less" than tv score delegates fr8m a
number of large cities were present and
the keynoto of the addresses was criticism
of Federal officials for not enforcing the
anti-trust laws against those responsible
for the shortage. ,
The convention at Its evening- session,
adopted a series of resolutions calling for
remedial action by tho proper officers of
the Government. These resolutions are
prefaced by a preliminary statement and
long series of declarations.
Adjournment was taken subject to tho
call of the chairman.
Mob Holds "Up Coal Train.
CHICAGO, Jan. 27. A mob of nearly
500 men, women and boys held up a Chi
cago & Northwestern coal train at Web
ster avenue, on the Wisconsin division,
and carried away the contents of five
cars before dispersed by the police.
Women- led the attack, uncoupling the
cars and intimidating the train crew.
For- three hours traffic was suspended
while the mob increased to more than 1000
persons. j

CHICAGO, Jan. 27. The City of Chicago
today began supplying coal to those who
are willing to pay for tho fuel they want,
but who cannot pay the exorbitant prices
demanded by the dealers.

SEATTLE, Wash., Jan. 27. Tho grand
jury today examined witnesses qn the
subjects of gambling privileges granted
the Clancy Bros. Jacob Furth, president
of the Puget Sound National Bank, was
a witness. It is s'ald he was wanted to
testify what persons deposited the money
for gambling protection paid through his
bank -to Frank Clancy.
