Plenty of Lour Stuff on the UlnrUet and Little Demand. CHICAGO, Jan. 2. Wheat ruled quiet and lower, with a good deal of long stuff on tho market and but little demand. Northwest re ceipts wero much In excess of those of the cor responding time last year. Advices from Ar gentina reported favorable harvesting weather, and a report was current that offerings of wheat from Russia were more liberal on ru mors of the speedy reopening of navigation on the Danube. Offerings continued very free dur ing the entire session, and the- market declined, gradually closing easy. May opened 4c lower, at 70JJc and sold between 75U0"5Kc and 7Gis0 76Uc closing c lower, at 75-fsC Tho corn market was rather dull, but firm ness prevailed at the start on unfavorable weather In tho West. Large estimated receipts for tomorrow were a bear factor. May closed lie lower, at 42c Oats were quiet and easy, the weakness In wheat being the principal depressing factor. The close was easy, with May lower, at 33C Tho chief feature in the provision market was tho marked gain In January pork, caused by active covering by shorts, which resulted In an advance of from 2502714c to 50C2'4c at the opening, sales being made at $17 7501S. The close was eas3 with January pork 350'371t.c higher, at $17 1)3. May pork was 714c lower, at $10 30; lard. 1012Hc lower, at $0 400 3 4-14. and ribs down 7Hc at $S 57f?S 00. Stiffening of Call Rnte Led to Gen cral Scllincr Hcndlnr SJiares Vigorously Advanced. NEW YORK, Jan. Z The trading on the Stock Exchange started with great animation this morning, and something like a bulge In prices. Buyers of Tuesday and Wednesday took advantage of the rise to secure their profits. Prices ran off under this process, and the market became dull. The advance was re newed again at ome points, but the snap scorned to be taken out of the market, and a fairly general selling movement developed In the afternoon, when call money rates stiffened to 15 per cent. Reading was vigorously ad vanced to above CO, and served to steady prices, but the .selling was renewed before the close, which was highly Irregular. Sugar ran off a point below Wednesday. The opening call loan rate of 10 per cent revealed a stiff demand for funds, but caused no uneasiness. Other devel opments pointed to a relaxed condition In the loan "market, and sterling exchange made- a sharp break, with the cessation of the demand for cables to meet the ycaV-end settlement In London, which was a feature last week. The London market showed Its usual prompt re sponse to the turn of the year, and money and discounts made added declines under the abundant offerings in the market. This was accepted as a hopeful Indication of a light de mand for tho future upon New York. Prelim inary figures of the week's currency movement, which runs up to Wednesday night, indicate that the banks have gained more than $2,200, 000 on the regular express movement with tho Interior, while the Subtreasury has taken from the banks $1,429,000, this Indicating a net gain of about $1,909,000 for the banks. The week's grain exports were disappointing, whllo the Imports of dry goods at New York nwe In value several hundred thousand dollars over those of last week, and exceeded those of this week last year by over $600,000, thus explain ing the large customs collections of tfie week. The stiffening of the call loan rate late In the day Indicates that there will be the usual delay In the return of funds to the channels of the New York money market, following a dis bursement period. Today's statement of the Reading's earnings for November proved disappointing, and the late advance In this stock was unexplained. Other statements of November earnings showed gross increases more than wiped out by Incorporating eexpenses. Louis ville and St. Paul, however, showed moderate net gains remaining. But these stocks were rather more affected by realizing than others. The announcement of the profit-sharing plan of the United States Steel Corporation caused a sharp rise in the preferred stock. Amalga mated Copper continued to advance on the rise in copper, but reacted sharply. Brooklyn Tran sit was somewhat depressed, and affected tho other local tractions. Missouri Pacific selling, ex-dlvidcnd, was notably strong and helped the Southwesterns generally. The early firmness in the bond market gave way to an irregular tono In sympathy with f "f," o.Tota! nles' par va,ue- 3.3oD;ooo. last call. " Were aU uncbanaed "a the Nctt Yorlc Stonk Market. Perhaps the most notable features are the strength of prices of staples as the year opens and the hopefulness as to the outlook for next Spring and Summer trade One unfavorable feature Is the con tinued shortage of anthracite coal In the East Reports of increased trade In 1902 over 1001 continue to come from nearly all Northern. Eastern. Southwestern and Pacific Coast points. Examples of this are given In the case of Kan sas City, which, despite the corn crop shortage of last year and the Winter wheat crop short age of this year, shows a net gain In all trade over 1901. The same report comes from St, Louis. Chicago reports Jobbers having more orders on their books than in previous years; that 3,000.000 tons of pig Iron was made or handled in that district during the year, and that Chicago banks hold 8 per .cent more of deposits, while loans are 14.5 per cent more than at the beginning of 1902. The outlook for 1903 on the Pacific Coast Is almost unanlmous lv favorable. The largest business ever done was transacted at Portland. Or., last year, and San Francisco reports the conditions of grow ing crops excellent. Nearly all lines of trade show gains for 1002 over 1001, at New York the majority ranging from 5 to 10 per cent. Woolen goods retain their good condition, and raw and manufactured materials have closed the week at the highest prices, with machinery well employed. Eastern shoe manufacturers have still something to do to fill Winter orders, and already some are being Importuned for prompter delivery of Spring goods. The leath er trades are quiet, with some selling at cut prices of old or undesirable grades reported from Boston. Aside from this prices are flrm-1- held, and there Is even some talk of further advances In sole leather. Wheat. Including flour, exports for the week ending January 1. aggregate 3,330,296 bushels, against 4.S1S.471 bushels In this week a year ago.
