tfHE MORNING OREGOftlAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1902. 15 BREWERS DON'T BUY But Are Expected in Hop Market Ne'xt .Month. GROWERS LOOK FOR ADVANCE Fcvr Transaction in the Market Now Last Snle Reported Averaged 1IG Cents Trade in Ulier Lines. Hops are considered good property, for those who can hold them. The--market at' the mo ment Is quoid weak by the majority of the trado. and there is certainly 111113 doing, but j,cop!e who have studied the situation are Arm ly convinced that prices will go up after the first of the year. They may advance before then, but the indication are rather toward a '-.i-r.p of a cent or two some time between mw and the holiday?. It Is usual for the mar ket to ." back a pes Just before Christmas on fr? selling by growers, and the same course jr?y be followed this year, though the farmers arc net fo much in need of ready money as they have. been in some previous years. At nny rate the promise is for better movement after the turn of the year. Brewers have been J-oll'ng oIT. many of them declaring they have cr.""'Th hops to carry them over. This is taken vlh a grain of salt by well-informed growers, who. rely on the Government's figures of a grrat increase in the beer output, who will buy heavi'.y In January if they find that prices have not drorped back to the figures ruling in the early irt of the season. Among the recent hop sales reported is L. B. Saunders' lot of 53 bales at Buttevllie. They w re taken by Llllenthal's agent at 25c and IC-iC, the entire lot averaging 26c The Polk County Itemlzer says there are now few unsold hops in the vicinity of Dallas. W. r Craven has 56 bales; George Eoweclirte. SO; Fcnton & TJncr. 27. At RIckreall, Fred Ko Fcr. Samuel Orr and Judge Burch still hold their crops. Henry Clanfleld has 1GS bales at Eall-tcn and 107 on the Luckiamute. II. F. Bldwcll, of North Yamhill, writes to deny the report tha he has sold his hops to Mr. Oppenhelmcr-at 25&C, nor has he offered jto dispose of his crop at this price. The Pacific Rural Press says it is estimated that four-fifths of the hop crop in California has been sold. POUTLAXD MARKETS. Grain, Flour, Peed, Etc. The notable early strength In today's stock market was appar ently due to a resumption of activity on the part of some of the recently -passive specula tive pools. The eo-called Western contingent, was credited with large transactions. The op erators on the bull side professed to have ad vance Information of the contents of the Pres ident's message. Either their information or the Judgment of lta effect was at fault, accord ing to the action of the market after the pub lication of the message. The market lacked all power of resistance to the selling movement from that time forward, and the aelllns pres- sure gained In force until near the close, which was dull and heavy. The cneck to th9 recent upward course of the spaculatlon In the local tractions had a depressing effect on the general market. Another chilling Influence was the-Indication of renewed trouble In the money market, con tained in a flurry in the call rate to 1 per cent.
