Tho Jobbing trade had another successful
Week of It, with an immense volume of, busl
BM8 passing, especially in merchandise lines.
In produce transactions the activity -was ,less
even. This was particularly the case with
fruits, as it is betwoexgseasotwr in thlB line, and
a busy day is frequently followed by a quiet
one. Saturday being.: a-Jewish. holiday, a num
ber of the grocery and- commission houses were
closed, and Front street in the afternoon had
a deserted look. ;
The principal item of Interest in the' produce
line was the announcement from the- East that
cranberries had advanced $1 per barrel. The
rise has not affected the' Portland -market yet.
Peaches have been In good supply, and receipts
or grapes have been heavy, not only from can
lorala, but from the East as well. Oregon
grapes from around Forest Grove are on tho
market Tomatoes havo been coming in pretty
strong, and have not cleanedup very well.
Tho poultry- market was oversuppll'ed most of
tho week, and moro or le3S will be carried over
for this week's opening. Prices are down to a.
reasonable basis, but even at that it is noccs
sary often to shade to make sales. Eggs con
tlnued firm during the week, advancing to 27c
for fancy ranch, storage selling at 22&24c
Butter and cheese were both strong.
The hop market was unusually' active and
Arm durlj? the week, and there was no let. up
la trading Saturday, between COO and COO bales
being sold on the closing day at 22c and 23c.
Growers are anxious to sell at the ruling prices.
There were no new developments in Eastern or
foreign advices Saturday.
Prices in the grocery lino are generally up
ward. Beans advanced twice in the week.
Whites now belmr Quoted at 4Uc. Canned fruits
are stronfr under a Rood demand. "With the
exception of peaches and pears, stocks, are pret
ty well cleaned out of first hands, and on many
lines prices have been withdrawn. . All grades
apricots except standards are very scarce.
The European demand for apricots has been
much heavier' than was expected. Tomatoes
are4trong. Tho pack in California will be
large, but the shortage in the East Is heavy-
,s&s it looks now, all canned vegetables will hold
strong throughout the season. Tho Mains corn
crop is only about one-third the normal, and
nearly every other heavy-producing canned
vegetables state reports oshortage.
Meat prices ruled steady, with a good move
-ment Side meats are away up. .and other pro
visions are strong. Lard showed a decline.
The week closed with a fairly active wheat
market, exporters quoting the prices give below
as the proper figures for exporting" prices. At
the Bame time, wheat has sold at ait advance
over the exporters' quotations.

crop report, together with weakness in corn.
Markets in the Northwest however, were
strong, and with good buying orders from that
source, -commission houses turned active "buy

side, and shorts covered freely; December
opened Uc lower, at 6!l08e, advanced
steadily to 70?4c. where it closed with a gain
of 9ic.
Corn was active. The opening wao easy on
bearish statistics, but predictions of rain caused
a firmer feeling. December closed strong, a

SOats opened weak, with general liquidation
by longs, influenced by the large increase lri tho
crop as shown by theGovernmerit report Which
Indicated the crop would be the largest on rec
ord. December closed c lower, at 31

Provisions were steady, with higher prices for
hogs and light receipts at the yards. January
