CHICAGO. Aug. 28. Bright weather gen-er-a'.y
was the bearish factor In the grains to-
i day "Wheat remained weak, and was active
only In spots. With lower cables and weatner
the best that could be desired, there -was a
i gcd amount of long selling early, and prices
txjk turns. There -was constant talk of a big
jn-r.-eir.ent of Spring -wheat soon and good pros
pers for better grading. Active threshing or
the new -wheat -was reported under -way.
FcZIawlng weeks of adverse -weather, the
sar.shlne turned all the crowd to the bearlsn
view, and ston-loss selling orders tame out.
After the break, however, there was good buy
ing at times. In general, the aspect of the
! -wheat market Indicated that the big longs
I -wanted to get out of the market before it
fiund a lower level, and the support -was
largely by those -who covered for a profit.
September started c lower, at lOft&iOtaC,
lipped to 60c and closed -weak ana wai
lower, at G9Ti70c.
Corn felt the effects of fine -weather, low ca-
.ties and rather freer offerings. The crowd
, turned uniformly bearish, and September was
at one time 2c lower. Almost every one In
tv.e pit had stuff for sale. There -was a late
rath on fairly cood buying, but the close -was
-weak, with September lc lower, at 5Gc
Cats ruled strong after an early dip. Janort
covering and good buying "by cereal concerns
put a arm tone In the pit. September closed

WEST CALLS FOR MONEY
200,000 TO COME FROM,TfEW YORK
TO SAX FRAXCISCO.
Stocks Make a Slight Rally, hat the
Market Is "Without Animation
Flurry In Colorado Fuel.
NEW YORK, Aug. 25. There was consid
erable further contraction of active stocks In
the stock market today, and the anlmatlon
whlch had been shown on the previous days
of this week was lacking. The speculatlva
disappointment caused by yesterday's reduction
of the dividend on Reading first preferred, and
the anxiety and the continued depletion of
banking reserves, due to the interior demand
for currency, were responsible for the pausa
in the speculative activity. It was apparent
that some cbarp loisrs were Incurred by the
plunging In Reading yesterday before the divi
dend reduction was announced and In Atchison
on the day before, previous to the report of
the shrinkage In July net earnings. There was
some further selling in these stocks today, and
Illinois Central reacted sharply from yester
day's show of strength. After the pressure
to eell by dtsgusteti holders on margins had
relaxed, prices were pushed up here and there,
with a rather sustaining effect on the rest of
the market. No stocks of the first grade were
concerned In this movement, which was con
fined to minor railroad stocks and to some
rarely active specialties, notably the gas stocks
and tho express stocks. Talk of consolidation
accompanied the rise in both cases.
. The strong rlso la Sloss-Sheffleld was un
explained. The upward movement In Canadian
Pacific seemed to be due to reports of the
company's land grant bonds. The Toledo, St.
Louis & Western stocks and the Wisconsin
Central Railroad stocks, and the St Joseph &
Grand Island stocks enjoyed the benefit of tho
revival of old rumors of absorption by stronger
Interests. Colorado Fuel's early break on tho
proclamation of renewed hostilities between
the contending interests In the property waa
followed by a violent recovery and again by
reaction. The undertone of the market was
decidedly Improved after the early pressure re
laxed, but there was no disposition toward tho
revival of enthusiasm with which stocks have
recently been bought. The Improved feeling
was partly due to the report in the country
of the measures In contemplation of the relief
of the financial situation. A report was formu
lated that the large banks were concerting
measures to provide, by purchase or borrow
ing, a sufficient Increase In holdings of Gov
ernment bonds to enable them to expand their
note circulation to a substantial degree. It Is
hoped that bank notes can be shipped to tho
Interior to moet the demand for circulation,
and thus afford protection to the reserves of
lawful money with the banks. The deposits
at the Subtreasury for transfer to the Interior
today amounted to $400,000. of which $200,000
was for New Orleans and $200,000 for San
Francisco.
The bond market was less active today and
irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,600,000.
United States old 4s advanced per cent on
tho last call.

MINE IS SOLD BY SHERIFF
BAISLEY-ELKIIORX Ifr PUT UP FOR
A 5000 JUDGMENT.
Indications Are That the Baker
County Property "Will Resume
Operations In a Short Time.
BAKER CITY. Or.. Auc. 2S. (Special.)
The Baisley-EIkhorn mine -was sold yes
terday by Sheriff Brown to satisfy a $5000
Judgment against the Eastern Gold Mining
Compejiy, the owners of the property, ana
in favor of tb,e Hellner Commercial Com
pany. It -was bid in by u. a. jonns, an
attorney of this city, for 54000. Tho sale
was made subject to a mortgage for $30,
000. and another judgment for about $4000.
There la considerable speculation aa to
the meaning of the purchase made by air.
Johns. He will say nothing about bis in
vestment, but it Is generally believed -e
is acting for Charles M. Hays, formerly
president of the Bonanza Mining Company,
vrho has been trying for Beverar-v montns
to gel hold of the Baisley-EIkhorn. In
addition to the morUnse and the two
Judgments,, there are a number of other
claims and attachments lor wages ana
supp'les, amounting to about ?20,000, which
Mr. liays has taken up at CO cents on the
dollar.
There Is a well-defined rumor that the
Armstrong faction of the Eastern stock
holder!, of the mine, as opposed to the
Norwltch people, stand ready to pay oft
the mortgages. Judgments and Hens
against the property and assume control
of the mine. There is little doubt from
the moves that aro being made that the
mine will soon be in operation again.

NEW YORK. Aug. 2S. The Commercial Ad
vertiser's London financial cablegram says:
Business on the stock exchange today was
restricted but firm. Consols dropped to 94 7-16.
and then rallied to 94 11-16 on reduction in tho
speculative "position, although the account Is
still large. Americans were very narrow, with
a tendency to see-saw. They opened heavy
on tho cut In Reading Railroad dividend. The
action of the directors is criticised severely
here. The old scandals in connection with
the road were recalled, and the market sagged
until the afternoon, when It rallied on New
York support, and the report that the United
States Government intended to buy more bonds.
The close was steady. Canadian Pacific was
buoyant, going to 145 on repayment of land
grant bonds.

IRO.V TRADE IS QUIET.
Anthracite Coal Strike Is Proving a
Most Depressing: Influence.
CLEVELAND. Aug. 2S. The Iron Trade Re
view this week says:
Comparative quietness has come Into the iron
trade. The coke supply has Improved slightly
In some spots, but, with other consumers the
liability to sudden stoppage Is as great as at
any time last week. It Is evident that there
can be no increase In the supply of domestic
pig Iron. The tendency in foundry iron Is up
ward, and the movement Is more marked be
cause of tho refusal of some producers, par
ticularly Southern, to quote for any delivery
in 1903. Meantime. 1S Birmingham Is tho
usual quotation for No. 2, although there have
been sales as high as $20.
Northern furnaces have been beset tho past
week by foundry customers, to whom the
banking of a furnace moans tho suspension
of melting. The effect of the anthracite strike
is cumulative, and It may be months before
It ceases to be felt In tho Iron Industry. In
the Pittsburg district. It Is reported that tho
producers of Virginia basic Iron have made
tenders of Iron for shipment late this year at
$21 50321 75, and for the future at $20 CO
20 75. Foreign Iron, bestemer, foundry and
.basic Is coming In at an Increasing rate, and
quotations for Mlddlesboro iron at Atlantic
seaboard are as low as $19, duty paid, for No.
3. Cargo lots of Mlddlesboro Iron have been
offered at $21 a ton. Pittsburg.
The decline In foreign steel has led to wait
ing by. some buyers. German billets can be
bought at $30, duty paid, as against $32 and
$33 for domestic steel. Some rail tonnage Is
still being placed, the- mills booking about 50.
000 tons the past week. Including an order
from the Wabash Railroad for 25,000 tons. Jn
the Chicago district quite a number of struc
tural orders are pending, and some German
material has been placed In that market, and
an Eastern shipbuilding company has placed
a good order for plates and shapes abroad.
One large plate mill is sold ahead to the middle
of 1003.
