Fair Shape
NEW YORK. Alttr.' 22. (Special.)
Buyers are disposed. to regard sockey'e
aalmon at U 25,. jr. o. b., on the basis -for
tails, as too high. The buying Is light.
Large Jobbers are refusing confirmations
on all gradcavhere, but packers' repre
sentatives report trade In the Middle Went
as taking hold on talis and flats In fair
shape, Spot cockeye advanced to $L 25;
talis to fl S5, and flats to 924. halves,
early in the week, but the upward move
ment -was mainly 'bn large speculative
purchases. The supply of flats, halves,
is good, but the Jobbing demand is only
fair. The high sockeye basis-affect
, chiefly the new Alaska talis, in which a
liberal interest is shown at 93c, f. q. U.
Outside packers are not offering here.
Spot Alaska Is quoted at C. 101 15, talis.
Interest in the Columbia JRIver pack is
fair, but at this moment no special inter
est Is shown. Packers, through their rep
resentatives here, are not disposed to cut
the prices named at the opening. Spot
moves slowlv at SI 50. tails? SI fift flats.
quarters is that no important business
is probable in sockeye futures until spot
is more closely cleaned up. It is ad
mitted, however, that with a small sock
eye pack and the fact that the same is
largely taken care of, present prices are"
not unreasonable.

OregonHomatoes were offered at from 40c to

table use. There was some demand for toma
toes for catsup purposes, but only a few boxes
were at hand, and It Is not probable that there
will be any supply until the local and neigh
boring gardeners send their produce to tho
market. Peaches were very scarce, but a large
quantity Is due In a few days. California is
now about out of tho market, and the Oregon
stock will bring good prices. Some late va
rieties 6f strawberries and cherries came in
during the morning, and they disappeared al
most ai soon as they were displayed. Canta

Another Excellent Influence Was the
Good SHpport Accorded Colorado
Fafcl Sloney Is Easier.
NEW YORK, Aug. 22. Today's stock mar
ket rallied from yesterday's depression, and
closed materially higher than last night. There
was a considerable contraction In the volume
of the -trading, and it was not until late In
the day that the disturbance to .sentiment
caused by yesterday's break In prices seemed
entirely overcome. This was partly due to
the evidence of continued liquidation In Colo
rado Fuel, which, it was feared, was creating
a necessity to unload stocks elsewhere In the
market. The appearance of -support In that,
stock, and its rally to more than a point over
last night, was an Important factor n reas
suring sentiment, and Its effect was. empha
sized by the renewed strength In, Lonlsvllle &
Nashville, which was supposed to be rele
gated. In -a speculative way, to the move
ment In Colorado Fuel.
The pojnts of strength in the early , part of
the day -were somewhat scattered, and might
be attributed to special causes. In the. lato
dealings ihe strength became more general,
and the market broadened out under the Im
mediate Influence of a 2-polnt rise In Southern
Pacific. The explanation of the strength In
this, stock was not obvious, beyond the fact
that the speculative leader who has made
this stock a favorite of lato years Is now due
to arrive from Europe. Ontario i& Western
contlued its advance, with a rumor that It
-was being sought by the Canadian Pacific for
a connecting link with New York City, thus
supplementing rumors of the Canadian pa
cific's purpose to enter Chicago, which were
subsequently denied.
The firmness of Western Union continued to
excite remark and conjecture as to a possible
combination of telegraph interests. When
Colorado Fuel made Its recovery there, was
a fairly general advance among the Independ
ent Iron and steel companies, from which the
United States Steel stocks wero conspicuous
exceptions, the movements of the latter being
restrleted to narrow fractions.
Tho grangers. Pacifies and Sonthwesterns
quite generally participated In the late move
ment In Southern Pacific The reaction in the
wheat market helped this movement. Yester
day's flurry In September corn, while without
any bearing on the coming crop. Is significant
of the very small movement of the tag-end of
last year's crop, which has- been reflected In
late returns of gross earnings of railroads In
the com territory.
The freedom from flurry in the money mar
ket, with the demand for. loans to carry over
until Monday, had a reassuring, effect, and
aroused hopes that the bank statement tomor
row would show a strengthened condition. If
this proves to be the case, it must be by
reason of loan contraction by - transfers of
credits to the trust companies and to foreign
lenders. The Interior currency movement
seems still to be slightly In faYor of New
York. The advancing quotations for Govern
ment bonds are believed to be due to the ex
pectation that the Treasury may take early
steps for the relief of the money market,
either by Increasing deposits with the banks
or by redemption of bonds.
United Slates bonds were Arm in .sympathy
with stocks. Total sales; par value, $1,370,000.
United States bonds, refunding 2s, the pld 4s
and the 3s advanced U per cent on the last
call.

BULLS UNLOAD CORN
SEPTEMBER AGAIX COSIES IX FOR
HEAVY SPECULATION.
Galas Arc Lost Before the Closing-,
Which Is at the Opening Flgrare
Wheat and Oats Down.
CHICAGO. Aug. 22. Heavy buying orders
for corn from St. Louis shorts were easily
filled,- bjg longs competing with each other to
unload. This willingness on the part of the
bulls to sell at fancy prices, however, did1 not
prevent an excited and much higher opening.
September corn started Hlc up. at 57K.65SC,
and with wide fluctuations jumped to 59c
Here big quantities came out and soon 1,000,-
000 bushels or more had been turned over to
the shorts. This broke prices badly. Septem
ber touched 65Hc Every bid or solo mado a
Quick change of Vitflc In the market price.
September trading throughout the entire ses
sion was sensational. Influential houses had
December for sale, but the early advances In
September sustained the latter month. , Con
ditions that usually rule the ptt were hardly
considered. Near the close September rallied
and December fell off, September closing
steady and unchanged at 67c, and December
o down, at 42c. Receipts wero only 23
cars, six of contract grade.
Except that the wjeather map was almost per
fect, most of tho early news In wheat favored
buyers. Cables were strong on the reports of
frosts and dry weather a Argentina. Re
ceipts wero small. Above all, shorts were
frightened, both at tho advance In wheat and
the tumult In tho corn pit. St. Louis was
heavily short and wanted over 1,000.000 bush
els. The result was an excited opening, with
September KQc to TtSlc higher, at 71?S0
72Hc. After the rush of buying orders was
over, brokers let go freely, the crowd followed,
and prices broke to 70c. One of the factors
was the falling oft In the cash demand, with
Minneapolis and cash premiums off 2Uc from
yesterday's figures. Much of tho early heavy
selling was by a prominent elevator concern
ttfat has had September options congested for
some time. After the whlpsawlng process had
shaken out many of the tailers, there was a
fair rally. September, however, closed rather
weak, Hc down, at 71jSc
Selling for a leading bull caused weakness
In oats. Even the great strength early In
wheat and corn had little effect and after a
little spurt prices fell back. September closed
weak; llHc down, at 33c.
