IS THE MORNING OEEGONIAN, SAT1?BDAY, JULY 19, 1902. i - m f M .7i n, . STAMPEDE IN OATS . Number of Shorts Caught in a Pretty Tight Box. RAIN MAIN CAUSE OF TROUBLE Jnlr Slake a Gain of Nearly Six Cents Rush .of Enylnff Orders Cnnac a Good Advance . - in Wheat. CHICAGO. July 18. There -was great excite ment In grains today. In point of spectacular display and phenomenal advances, oats July In partloular held tho center of the stage. The causr, of tho stampede was the simple situation of a goodly number of shorts caught in a pret ty tight trap. The unfortunates saw no other way out than to climb out at a high point, and In consequence fought to save themselves. The rain was the cause of most of the trouble. From points near this market where the grain Is jellow. reports camo In that whole fields were down and badly twisted. Receipts were only S7 cars. 25 of contract grade. Of these arrivals, only seven cars were new stuff, and these seven showed no contract grades. There was a bis trade in oats, notwithstanding the fact that offerings were scarce. The opening of business was wild. July (new) started Sc h!g"r. at 55c and touched 564c before a re action set In. September opened iyic up. at SSgSSc. and easy touched 33Tc After the first rush to coven there was a lull, and prices el'ppcd back. Just before the close, however, July (now) was given a severe turn, and closed exalted anS strong. 5c up. at 57Uc Septem ber closed strong, lc advanced, at 304c Wheat had a rush of buying orders to push prices' up at the opening, and a very strong market ensued. Houses with Southwestern connections were among the best buyers. July was In special demand, and was bid up excited ly until 78c was reached, a gain of 3e over yesterday's close. Shorts were badly scared. There Were several bearish Influences at work, but little or no effect was felt from them. Sep tember wheat opened c to iSc up, at 72$i72c. and sold at 72c Profit-taking on the advance brought a reaction, but the close was firm for September, with c gain, at 72V4 72c. July closed strong, 2ftc higher, at 77c, The chief bull Ineentlves were the rain and the remarkable shortage of contract-grade stuff In the new receipts. Corn, after an early spurt, lapsed into dull ness, and fluctuated narrowly. Receipts of contract grade were materially cut down to day. Selling on the bulge brought a reaction, and there was little unusual about the market the rest of the day. July closed firm. &C up, at 66c. September closed firm. The mills, when In the market, are forced to pay much higher prices to secure lots of any consequence. BOOM IN STOCKS STILL ON LARGE . .SPECULATORS CONTINUE THEIR- CAMPAIGN. : Expect Good Crops to Cnnse General Bnyins: and Thus Afford a Chance for Llanidnjion. NEW TORK. Jcfy 18. Today was 'another animated day in the stock market, with ttie aggregate sales over 1.000,000 shares. The strength and variety of the market had no new developments to account for them, but the large capital which has embarked upon the project of putting up prices and inviting an outside following pursued Its operations with appar ently unabated confidence. These operators are apparently firm in the conviction that the pub lic sentiment of the country has arrived at that stage of confidence In the success of the year's crop, the continued prosperity of all lines of Industry and the sufficiency of the money re sources of the country, that tho example of a vigorous upward movement of slocks Is all that Is needed to Induce them to come Into tho market and buy stocks freely and boldly, thus affording a medium for the liquidation of tho holdings which tho capitalists are taking on In the rise. jg The leaders of today's market were Pennsyl vania and affiliated railroads. Southern Rail way was brought Into the movement In a way to mako It appear tha closer relations than those now existing might be in prospect be tween the two properties. The apparent de termination of tho coalmtners convention not to declare for a general strike was given as a reason for the aggressive buying of Pennsyl vania and all tho seaboard roads and coal carriers. It is no new thing in Wall street that, with thp approaching dissolution of the voting trust, as Is now in control of Reading, there Is a large absorption of a stock with a view to con trolling the board of directors. No authorita tive Information on the subject was forthcom ing today. The accompanying advance of New Tork Central was held to signify an acquies cence la the new control on the part of the Vandcrbllt Interests. The banks have apparently gained cash this week to- the extent of over $4,000,000, of which $1,622,000 was on Eubtreamry operation and tho rest by direct receipts by express rom the Interior, showing the temporary nature of last week's unseasonable demand from the Interior. New Yorkexcbange at Chicago rose to a pre mium of 15c Tha grangers did not bhare fully In the day's strength, but they were by no means depressed. In SRlte of the unwelcome rains In the crop regions and one or two un favorable weekly reports of earnings. The speculation in bonds was active Total sales, par value, $3,266,000. The pen of Alexandre Dumas never pic tured a more thrllllns battle against odds or more hairbreadth escapes than the newspaper reports of the escape of the convict Tracy from a Montana prison. If he were anything but a low desperado the public would be compelled to give vent to a gasp of admiration for the extraor dinary and successful daring which he has shown at every stage in his flight. If he were an Italian he would divide with Musaolino the popular devotion and with him be nominated to the chamber whoso laws he defied. Tracy's escape has been marked by all the features of wild romance. He slipped through lines of ambushed pursuers; slept in their midst: abandoned land for water, and took to land again to compel an un willing family to supply him with food and clothing, and then, with a captive at the oars, set out on the ocean in a cockle shell craft. The population has been hos tile to the murderer, and tho alarm has been given wherever he has made his identity known in search of food. If he escapes and In an undeveloped country ho well may for a time it will be through his own efforts. Thero has been no de generate popular sympathy with the crim inal such as prevented ilussolino's cap ture forvmany years. The Sheriff has had no trouble in securing a posse. Tracy will be brought to bay in the course of time and punished for his crime. The only thing that is to be feared Is that the angered people of the state may take the law into their -own hands If Tracy is caught alive, and string him to a tree. - RECREATIOS.
