BID DROP IN CORN
Now There Is Talk of an End-of-JuIy
Corner.
ENTIRE CROWD STARTS TO SELL
Generous Supply Movlns Ent Prob
ably the CnnKC of Slump Wheat
Opens Firm, but Declines Stead
ily Throughout the Dny.
It Is believed the July comer la corn
will be dealt a bard blow today by the
Chicago Board of Trade, -which -will act
on the petition for a "marginal price"
for the cereal. A slump of CV5 cent
was recorded yesterday.

CHICAGO, July 14. A heavy movement In
corn held the attention of grain speculators
today, and brought slumps all round. July
corn continued ts display of psTOtechnlcs of
last week, althbugh today It looked like the
falling stick Instead of the rocket's flight.
Everything on 'change was bearish, but in the
general decline the thudding drop of pc In
July corn was most complete, and caused talk
of an end of tho com corner.
The bulls tried to give several reasons
for the decline. Probably the true causd was
that com. In generous supply. Is moving toward
Chicago at a rapid rate. Ever since the talk
In July options, elevators and cash handlers
have been busy making contract grade corn
with their utmost energy. Today, the bulls had
to face receipts of 472 cars, 110 of which wero
contract. In addition to this, private elevators
made and put out 207 cars and 110,000 bushels,
a total of over 500,000 bushels of contract stuff.
The fair weather of the last few days was Just
the sort to help in grading, and with the re
ported estimates of 845 cars for tomorrow,
which will probably be augmented to over 1000
cars by srlvato houses, the crowd, led by .the
elevator people, sold to a man. There was also
a disposition to believe that the board of di
rectors would stipulated a marginal price for
corn, so that both longs and shorts could be
called heavily. If such action Is taken by the
board tomorrow, it is believed It will work
against the corner.
September corn closed weak, c lower, at

"Wheat ruled weak after a momentary firm
ness at the opening on prospects of rain. Ca
bles were lower In Liverpool, Paris was closed
and receipts showed heavy percentage of new
wheat. The visible'! supply increased 686,000
bushels, against a decrease of over 2,000,000
bushels last year. These influences, together
with those attendant upon the corn break, off
cet a few showers la several "Western States.
Tho crowd began selling freely, and September
wheat, which opened a shade lower to Ql4c
higher, at 73H&73&.C, declined steadily as the
session advanced.
Oats had something of a set-back today as a
result of free offerings by farmers of the new
oats In order to take advantago of higher
r:!"es. September closed weak, l4l$4c down,
at 32H.c

BIG BULLS AGAIN ACTIVE
PICK OX ST. PAUL AS LEADER AND
CAUSE NOTABLE RISE.
Mass of Securities Remains Singu
larly Unresponsive Industrials
Also Have Weak Points.
NEW YORK. July14. The speculative oper
ators in favofof higher prices for stocks took
hold of the market with renewed vlror today,
centering their campaign in St. Paul. That
stock has always been peculiarly effective as
a leader, owing- to Its representative character
among the Western lines, and tho large floating
supply in the market. Its notable rise today,
therefore, had some sympathetic effect on stocks
of its own class. The mass of securities, how
ever, remained slnrularly unresponsive to the
aggressive strength of St. Paul, and even
sagged In soots from torpid demand. In the
early market, the effect of the St. Paul move
ment was Interfered with by the obvious proflt
taklr.g going on in Missouri Pacific and the
suspicion thus aroused, that the St. Paul ma
nipulation was expressly designed to facilitate
this profit-taking. There were also weak spots
among the Industrials. The declines from Sat
urday's level reached a point in Missouri Pa
cific Sugar and Amalgamated. Atchison re
sponded early to the St. Paul rise, and followed
It closely' throughout the day, but It was not
until late that Union Pacific, and still later
when Southern Pacific came Into the move
ment. The St. Louis Southwestern stocks and
Illinois Central were also conspicuous.
A reference to the day's sales list will show
that the stocks specified made up the principal
portion of the day's market. As each stock,
was successively brought forward Into the
movement, the buying took on large propor
tions. Blocks of 1000 to 6000 shares were dealt
In freely In all the active stocks. The closing
was easy and mostly unchanged, with a few
slight losses. An effort was made to advance
Reading, but It was not pursued. The favor
able bank statement on Saturday was urged
as an evidence of the easing conditions In the
money market, but money rates were not ap
preciably easier here, and foreign advanced a
fraction. The market closed rather irregular,
but with the grangers at the top level.
The bond market was more irregular even
than stocks, and was without conspicuous fea
ture. Total sales, $4,247,000, United States
refunding 2s declined , and the 3s and old
and new 4s U per cent on call today.

adopted, but discovered later that a reso
