The principal business coming before
the Grand Lodge will be the matter of
extension that is, measures for continu
ing the Increase in membership. On this
, point Grand Master Workman Hogue
snakes the following recommendations:
"The fact that we have found it so
difficult to obtain suitable deputies has
caused me to devote much more time and
energy to the work than I could really
afford. A supervising deputy, as recom
imended in that report, is in my opinion
a necessity from this time forward, if wo
are to maintain the proud position we now
hold. Such a man, continued from year to
year, would become more valuable as
time passes. This year I have traveled
thousands of miles and written hundreds
of letters in search of men In the local
J lodges who would do the- work. This
information, and especially the acquaint
ance, I cannot pass on to my successor,
-however willing nay, anxious I may be
to do so."
There will also be the annual election
of officers. William Smith, a prominent
attorney of Baker City, being grand fore
Xnan, is in the regular line of promotion,
and will doubtless be elected grand mas.

At this session the Grand Lodge will also
let a contract for publishing a 10-page
paper for three years. It is to be printed

J. H. Zane, a well-known and prominent
member of Fidelity Lodge, Portland, pres
ent publisher of the A. O. U. W. Reporter,
and Frank Davey, of Salem, are the most
prominent bidders for this publication.
This Grand Lodge may have an added
Interest in the presence of Webb McNabb,
supreme master workman, of Gaylord,
Kan. It was announced at the session of
the Supreme Lodge that he would return
to Portland and attend the session of the
Oregon Grand Lodge.
Mrs. Wllda Belknap is the grand chief
of honor of the Degree of Honor, the
auxiliary of the A. O. U. W-, and Mrs.
Ollle Stephens is grand recorder.

ASTORIA. Or.. July 13. The County
Physician and Sheriff of Wahkiakum
County, Washington, yesterday afternoon
visited the -points along the river that
have been under quarantine for some
weeks on account of smallpox. They
found all the cases that have existed near
Pillar Rock convalescent, and the quaran
tine will be raised Friday. At Hodges,
near Harrington 'Point, there are several
new casets and the quarantine will be
maintained for seme time.
J. T. Lee. of Warrenton, has accepted
the position of principal of the public
school at Skagway, Alaska. Professor Lee
Is one of the most successful teachers In
thla vicinity, and for four years was Su
perintendent of Public Instruction in this
county.

Helman drove some good miles, but that
man of complacency does not believe In
urging for a mark except when there Is a
prize In sight. Bradford, Smith and Til
den all had their trotters and pacers out.
They made from 2:20 to 2:2?, and L. Zim
merman's Louis Z. has run In the same
time. Conditions for records were splen
did, for the track was In fine condition.
But no attempts at marks were made.
Zephyr, who won In a Jog a stake at
Cincinnati In 2:13. is a son of Zombro,
who is owned by George Beckers, who Is
now in Portland. Zephyr, who Is only 4
years old, has been entered for the big
M. & M. stake Tuesday, and Mr. Beckers
declares that she will carry off the J10.000
stake as easily as the $2000 prize won at
Cincinnati. Mr. Beckers haa purchased a
half-brother to Zephyr. Lord Kitchener,
who will soon arrive from Los Angeles.
Kitchener Is a large black stallion, and he
has worked a mile In 2:20. He may be

Jeffries Now In Oakland. '
SAN FRANCISCO. July 13.-James J.
Jeffries left his training quarters at Har
bin Springs this morning and came to
Oakland, where he will finish his prepara
tions for the big fight. All along the
route the champion was enthusiastically
greeted by the scores of friends he has
made since taking up training In Lake
County. Everj' one wished the big fellow
luck and appealed to him. to return again.
Jeffries was much pleased" at his- reception.
The Jeffries party arrived at Oakland at
5:30 P. M. and went Immediately to the

Cuba, arrived here at noon today, and
was met at the St. Nicholas Hotel during
the afternoon and evening by many of
his old neighbors. He will go to his
former home at Hamilton Tuesday, After
spending a week or more here attending to
hlo personal affairs, he will join his fam
ily In Western New York. This Is the
first visit of Mr. Rathbone to his home
since the recent trials in Havana, and he
was received by many friends whose calls
presented the appearance of a reception.
To all inquiries of newspaper men. Mr.
Rathbone replied that he had nothing fur
ther to say regarding Cuban affairs; that
he had sent his petition to Congress tor
a full Investigation, and pending, action
on that petition he would not discuss any
phase of the Cuban situation.

by his brother, the next In succession to
