day, the dominating Influence was the rain

already soaked country. September wheat. In
"which option the bulk of trade -was transacted
in the wheat pit. opened Tsi5sC higher, at

the clamor of a rain-scared crowd of shorts.
Although not needed for the purpose, a de
crease of 3,725,000 bushels In the quantity
afloat, and a report that France would have
to do some steep Importing of wheat owing
to prospective late European harvests, .acted
as auxiliary Influences In sustaining prices.
On the other hand, there were two considera
tions, lower Liverpool cables, and the" feeling
'that the rain must Anally cease. Trade was
heavy during the first hour, but the price did
net ret outsido the opening range, nor did it
during the remainder of the session, when the
volume of transactions decreased. The close
was strong, September lUc up, at 73c
Corn was excited, and the feeling was nerv
ous, but prices exhibited a buoyancy which
refused to be dulled, even when the manipu
lators of the July delivery dumped September
Into the pit In imposing quantities. July corn
startl'd beholders by Jumping to 72c the
highest price In 10 years. A deal In the Sep
tember option enlivened the opening hour. The
manipulators of July began selling September,
but the representative of an influential house
stood close and nonchalantly absorbed
everything offered. The excessive rainfall
caused much fear of irreparable damage to the
crop, and made an Interruption of the move
nt nt and a deterioration In the grading al
most certain. While Interest in July was
keen, owing to Its high price, the biggest part
of the trade was In September. There was
naturally much profit-taking on the upturn,
but generally commission houses wero on the
buying side. Indicating that the country is
getting on the long side of the market. July
sold between 70c and 72c, and closed strong,
2 over Saturday, at 7214c. September closed
lUIc up, at C3c
Oats contributed their share to the bull ex
citement, prices advancing sharply on unre
strained buying by almost all Interests. The
weather, of course, was the influence. July
closed l?ic up, September lUlc up.

The European market emerged from a pro
tracted holiday without much of a show of
strength, and, finding no encouragement from
abroad, local exporters were not Inclined to
advanco their limits on wheat. Now that the
business for the old season has ended, J ex
porters are In no special hurry to rush matters
until wheat Is offering more freely. The sea
son ended with about 1,000.000 bushels on spot
at tidewater, Portland and Pujet Sound, and
this is sufficient for any immediate require
ments, in fact mora than enough to load all
of the ships that will bo due within the next
SO days. Freights wer In much the same
condition as wheat yesterday, no transactions
coming to light. The outlook for much busi
ness for a few weeks, at least. Is not bright.

Butter continues to clean up so rapidly that
some dealers have advanced prices to 45c, but
it Is selling only in flmited quantities at that
figure. The Valley is full of buyers from Pu
get Sound cities, and they are paying pretty
full figures for all of the choice stock they 1
can secure, and this has stiffened the Portland
market a little. Some dealers were holding
ergs at 20c yesterday, but most of the sales
were made around 19c Poultry has firmed up
In response to the Fourth-of-July demand,
and quotations are higher all round, with
everything that Is received finding buyers
without difficulty. Nothing was carried over
Saturday, and the market is In better shape
than it has been at any time this season.

day were somo very fine hothouse cucumbers,
which sold at fljper dozen. Strawberries are
still In fairly good supply, but prices are Arm.
Raspberries are coming in more freely, and
prices are easier. The country demand for
bananas Is pretty liberal, and the large cur
plus is cleaning up a little better than It was
last week.

reflected tho recent prevailing tendency of
speculative sentiment to lay greatest stress
upon encouraging developments, and to Ignore
what appears to be unfavorable with an In
visible cheerfulness. The money market be
camo quite active today, and call loan rates
ran up to 7 per cent under the Influence of
the month-end demand for funds. This had
the effect of curtailing operations In stocks to
some extent, but forced no appreciable liquida
tion. The special stocks which have been
chosen as leaders of the market by tho specu
lative party, which has made itself the guard
Jan of values, showed points of strength at
various times during the day. The course of
the grain markets showed a feellngof consid
erable anxiety as to the effect of the heavy
storms upon the grain crops, but aside from
St. Paul, no railroad stock was much affected
by this development. On the other band, the
favorable effect of the rains on the cotton crop
found a favorable response- in" some of the cot
toarf.rrying roads, notably Texas & Pacific
and Southern Railway. The coalers also re
sponded to the expression of confidence on the
part of the operators that the coal strike is
disintegrating There is a belief in the finan
cial interest that the coal operators have
been deferring active steps toward a resump
tion of mining until after the Fourth of July
holidays. In the belief that the holiday period
might aggravate a tendency to disorder.
A buoyant recovery from the recent depres
sion In Colorado Fuel was attributed to ma
nipulation Or to a struggle for control among
disaffected Insiders. Sugar also made an un
explained rise, but tho industrials generally
were heavy. United States Steel stocks
dropped bock a fraction. Overcapitalization,
insufficient provision for working capital, and
exorbitant allowances to merger syndicates,
and the continually developing necessity for
bond Issues by the industrial combinations are
subjects under constant discussion In Wall
street. The immunity of stock 'values from
barm on account of the flurries in the home
market is attributed to the fact that the
large speculative interests have provided them
selves with time loans over this period of July
settlements. Tho rise In money rates In Lon
don today caused an advance In sterling ex
change at Paris, and thus relieved the pres
sure upon New Tork. The market closed al
most Inanimate and steady.
There was an active market for Burlington
Joint 4s. In connection with the closing up of
the syndicate. Tho understanding that the
syndicate .holdings were disposed of In connec
tlo with a settlement made the, bond market
strong. Otherwise, the market was quiet and
