CHICAGO, June 20. From the outset wheat
was Dullish. Liverpool made good advances,
and Paris, In addition to yesterday's strength,
showed Increases of lHlc Foreign markets
were extremely nervou over the prospect of
short crops in consequence of wet weather. At
home, rains fell continuously, and more were
predicted generally. Advices from Nebraska
stated that the ground was In such a soaked
condition that tho farmers did not attempt
cutting grain. Further than this, grain that
had been cut in other states was damp, and
would not grade contract. Shorts covered free
ly and business was more active In wheat
than for a long time. July opened 3c

Apathetic .Conditions Asraln Prevail,
and Dealings Are Light.
NEW YORK, June 20. The speculative liqui
dation which broke prices yesterday was no
longer in evidence today, but the market
slipped back Into & rather apathetic condition,
the dealings dropping well below 500,000 shakes
J again. Of tbls total, A large proportion was
concentrated In & few leading stocks, notably
United 3tates Steel. Missouri Pacific, St. Paul
and tho Wabash stocks. The evidence In sup
port for United States Steel was an effective
Influence In steadying the market, as yesterday's
sharp break In that stock had an unsettling
sentiment on the whole market. There was
evidence of re-buylng of .stocks by the large
Interests which liquidated yesterday and the
day before. Thts served to relieve a latent
feeling that the recent bull movement kad been
& preliminary to a prolonged hear campaign.
Today's strength was restricted to a few points,
and was not very well sustained, the closing
being dull and heavy. The Southwestern and
St. Paul absorbed a Urge share of the strength.
St. Louis & Southwestern preferred rose nearly
3 points, and a slightly greater rise In Chicago
& Eastern Illinois gave rise to a report that
the latter road was to bo purchased by the
former. The movement In the Western roads
was not accounted for by the crop news, which
was rather unfavorable as to grain. The coal
ers were rather neglected, and moved in a
narrow and irregular way.
Reports by the banks of a gain In the inte
rior currency movement up to Thursday night
of over $3,000,000 gave rise to the hope of n
favorable bank statement tomorrow. More at
tention was given to the sterling market, which
advanced an additional fraction, London selling
stocks here freely. The Bank of England
gained nearly $3,000,000 in gold yesterday,
which ts a reassuring development for tho
whole financial world, in view of the heavy
semi-annual requirement of that institution.
It is a notable fact that the Government' sur
plus revenue Is still under $4,000,000 for this
month, compared with nearly $11,000,000 for
the same period In June, and reports from
Washington indicate that the Treasury author
ities hardly expect the year's surplus to reach
the estimated flgurt of $90,000,000. With 10
days remaining of the fiscal year, the surplus
Is still below $SO,000,000. The rains In the
West, which are delaying the harvesting of
grain, promise also to postpone the demand on
New Tork for money to move the crops.
There was an active demand for some of the
Southwestern railroad bonds. The market gen
erally was lrresrular. Total sales. S3.035.V00.
United States coupon 4s declined i on tho last
call.
Closing: Stock Quotations.

CHICAGO, June 20. Provisions showed
marked and independent strength all day. The
hog market started out strong, but gradually
eased off. A Slight dip followed the steady
close of ;the hog market, but tho end of the
session showed prices almost at the top. The
best figures of the year were made today.
July pork closed 12c up, lard 10c up and ribs

CrOii Prospects In All Section Con
tinue FlattcrlnK Trade in the '
Eaat 1 3Iore Quiet.
NEW YORK, June 2a R. G. Dun &
Co.'s weekly review of trade tomorrow
will say:
Trade at the East is more quiet, owing to
the advancing season, and the bad effect of
prolonged labor controversies Is being felt In
certain lines. Reports from the Interior and
the far West nre more encouraging, bountiful
harvests being expected, while the light stocks
carried crfet from the previous season assure
profitable prices.
Tha belt Indications of continued prosperlty
!s the fact that quotations do not recede, even
in the lines where at present there is only a
modrate degree of activity. Railway earnings
thus far reported for June increased 3.9 per
cent over 1900. f
Uncertainty regarding their ability to secure
"pig Iron at reasonable prices Is making pro
ducers of steel cautious In accepting contracts
that call for delivery at even remote dates.
Quiet conditions prevail In footwear markets.
A stronger silver market has revived pur
chases for export to China. Supplemental buy
ing of woolens Is also limited. Shoe shops In
New England have more orders, yet most fac
tories operate only part of the time, and some
aro entirely Idle. Leather is dull and foreign
dry hides weaker.
Lock of rain ln the Eouthwest Is the only
seriously unfavorable crop Indication of tha
week, while exceptionally encouraging reports
are received from most points Domestic grain
makes ccod progress, but bad news has been
received f ron abroad, artd the xjutlook la favor
able for largo exports.
Failures for the week number 194 .in the
United States, against 193 last year, and 19 In
Canada, against 14 a year ago.
