strawberries Is at an end. and the oniy re
ceipts yesterday were of Oregon stock. Sup
plies were not heavy enough to affect prices,
and the best stock still sold at 10c and 12
per pound, although the latter price was gen
erally shaded, Tho only change of Importanco
In groceries yesterday was a 60c decline In
Arbuckle coffee The other brands of package
coffees have not yet followed suit, but will
undoubtedly do so. Sugar is In excellent de
mand, there being a marked Increase In the
Quantities sold since June 1, as compared with
a month earlier. In produce, there Is still con
siderable strength In butter and eggs, and
strictly first-class candled stock Is selling at
18c Pork and veal failed to show any recov
ery from tho weakness of last week, and both
are a trifle unsteady at quotations. Potatoes
are weak for old stock, and It Is expected that
the receipts of new potatoes due on the steam
er late last evening win tell a shade under
the prices at which the last previous consign
ment was held. Tho wool market is active,
but there Is no advance noted in prices.

Fine "Weather Causes Drop in "Wheat
In the East-
CHICAGO, June 0. Wheat was depressed by
the fine weather more than by anything else.
For several days tho short Interest had bfen
much worried over the prospects of damage to
Winter wheat, by & wet harvest. In conse
quence, there was -considerable covering, and
the bulls bought recently to a fair extent
Today, all this was changed when the weather
map showed clear weather prevailing generally.
The Southwestern markets were weak at the
start, St. Louis being down He and selling
here on the weather. Tho local crowd was
very bearish at the start, and July opened
e?0Tsc down, at 71?4e to 719J071HC and
soon tumbled to Tiyfcc. Tho cessation of a
demand from shorts eliminated tho otherwise
bullish influences that might have been ex
pected from a decrease of 2.640,000 bushels In
the on-passage stuff, and of 2,512,000 bushels
In the visible supply. Even some talk of ex
porting new stuff and a fair show of strength
at New York on the French demand at weak
ened prices had no effect. ."Wheat was very
heavy and seemed unable to help Itself, and as
no support came to Its aid, the close was weak,

30,000 pounds of electrolytic copper for June
delivery was sold at 12.30c the qtioted range
at the closing being 12.25012.30c with casting
at 12012ftc; Lake at 12.35012.00c and stand
ard spot to September, at 11.70011.90c Thus
the geheral market for copper was a shade bet
ter than last quoted. The London market
closed 6s net higher, and spot at 54 20s, and
futures at 54 12s Gd.
Tin at London was 6s net lower, with spot
at 132 and futures at 128 10s, The local
market had an average gain of 25 points. Spot
closed at $30 30030 40.
The lead market ruled steady at New York,
spot being quoted at 4ftc London lead was
unchanged, at 11 7s 6d.
Spelter continued more or less nominal at
4ftc London gained 2s Gd, advancing to 18
12s Od.
Locally iron was without change, with trade

NEW YORK. Juno 0. The dullness of tho
trading In stocks was unrelieved today, but
the Inertia of prices was not quite so absolute.
There was a scattering distribution of buying
orders during ther early trading, which lifted
prices slightly. The demand Subsequently died
away, but tho higher level of prices was pret
ty well maintained during the rest of the day.
News of weather conditions favorable to all
of the crops seemed to be the cause of the
buying, which was most prominent In Atchi
son. That stock and St. Paul were moved
up a point. Vague rumors were current all
day of a. coming settlement pf the coal strike,
and operators in stocks professed, satisfaction
over the small effect of the soft coalminers
strike. The public statement made on behalf
of the anthracite operators, declaring them
selves satisfied with the success attained In
preventing damage to the mines by flooding,
was also cited by buyers of stocks.
The presence in the city of the United States
Commissioner of Labor and the interest in
the strike thus manifested on behalf of tho
President :rtra variously regarded. The ques
tion of the statutory power of the President to
actively intervene, however, seemed to afford
most satisfaction to those Interested tat stocks.
Reading's gain reached a point. The rise of
lft in Hocking Valley was apparently duo to
the fact that the labor trouble lias not affected
its territory. Sugar had the benefit of a rlso
in the price of refined product, and of hopes of
an agreement on Cuban reciprocity at Wash
ington. Tho raising of the dividend rate of
the Chicago, Minneapolis & Northwestern kin
dled hopes ct increases in other stocks. The
market never showed tho slightest animation
but such sluggish advances as took place were
due to these causos.
The money market showed a hardening ten
dency, rates for tlmo money loans advancing
to 4ft per cent. Money-lenders expressed the
belief that call loan rates will shortly advance
The money situation Is obviously an Important
repressive Influence on speculation. So also
Is the question of the ultimate effect of the
ending of the Boer War. There has always
been a question of the share of the effect pro
duced upon the industrial reaction in England
and Europe by the Boer War and the cutting
off of South African gold and the new compe
tition of the United States, respectively. There
Is also the question now whether the stimula
tion of the peace news is to be diverted, from
the United States lno a revival of English and
Continental industry. The substantial basis
reached there Jy a long process of liquidation
favors such an assumption, but the Immense
undeveloped field stilt remaining In this coun
try must be borno In mind, as was strikingly
shown by our continued heavy borrowing from
foreigners, even while our own wealth has
been increasing. The field for new develop
ment in tho older countries Is naturally much
more restricted, but the question of possible
withdrawal of foreign credits from the United
States as a result of the ending of tho Boer
War Is an open one. and la attentively con
sidered In American financial circles. The
bond market was dulL Total sales, $1,215,000.
United States registered declined ft, and the 2s,
coupon, the 3s and the 6s ft per cent on the

PORTLAND.-June 9. (To the Editor.)
In yesterday's Oregonlan you stated that
an Improvement In telegraphy was need
ed. While you aro talking of the disadvan
tages of the Western Union, I think it
would be proper to speak in behalf of the
Postal Telegraph Cable Company.
I will admit that the Western Union
does not spend more than a fortune on
Improvements each year, but I think the
Postal spends considerable money for the
extension of its lines, etc
If you will think for a moment where
the offlces of the Postal are situated you
will find them In the best buildings of
the city.
It is not only this city, but every city
of the system-
As to Improvements, 10 years ago you
enter the "battery-room, and you would
have found from. 5000 to 6000 cups of bat
teries. Now you enter the operating
room of the Postal, and you will find six
dynamos that gives the power of all those
batteries.
As to the rates, they are being lowered
as fast as possible. In yesterday's Ore
gonlan a notice of reduction of rates was
given.
And I think our friend Dr. -Pupln can
not say that of the Postal which ho said
of the Western Union, that they are not
making Improvements.
