THE MORNING OREGONIAK. FKIIMY, JUNE 6, 1902.
COMMERCIAL AND
About the only change of Importance In lo
cal market quotations yesterday was a decline
of 10c per 100 In the price of su:ar, this Bet
ting the figure back to $4 25 per ICO. where It
was before the last advance was made. The
decline yesterday was not due to any change
In the general situation, and Is effective only
In this city and Immediate vicinity. It was
made by local dealers as a protection against
the competition of San Francisco merchant,
who had been cutting In on this field. Wheth
er the Callfornlans will permit matters to re
main undisturbed or not. Is undecided, but the
sugar market, both locally and Nationally,
seemed to be rather unsteady. There was con
tinued firmness in eggs and butter yesterday,
and the supply of poultry has not yet over
taken the demand. Potatoes were still weak
for old stock, and even new were net moving
any too freely at 2c per pound. The wool
market Is a little more active, and culte a
number of sales are being made at Eastern
Oregon points. There has been but little Im
provement In price, but the figures paid seem
to bo fairly satlstactory to growers. The
Eastern wool market Is thus reported by the
New York Journal of Commerce, under date
of June 2:
"Business transacted In tho wool market dur
ing the past week has asalti been very light.
and little buying dlni jtltlon shown py manu-
I iacturers. In some Instances, however, more
Inquiries have been reported, though sales have
not displayed a corresponding activity. Gen
eral Inquiries have been made for pulled wools,
but prices offered to holders are too far from
their ideas to permit of sales being made. The
fact that stocks are small has given additional
8trngtlf to holders refusals to make conces
sions, knowing that his present stock cannot
bo replaced at today's prices. Many wool deal
ers express the opinion that manufacturers are
making Inquiries end asking concessions sim
ply to find out the strength of the market;
when this has been accomplished to their lik
ing orders are booked for.
"Texas wools have been In somewhat better
request during the week, both Fall and Spring
wools being taken. A Spring Callahan clip is
reported to have been moved at private terms.
On foreign and carpet wools little In the way
of change can be noted. Demand has been
limited, and sales reported are of decidedly
moderate proportions."

and the unsatisfactory condition of affairs In
Europe and the East prevented exporters from
putting forth any strenuous efforts to secure
the cereal. Quotations are nominal at 65&c

latter variety except In a email way for mill
ing purposes in the Valley. Spot stocks of
wheat are slowly accumulating, and there Is
enough In port to load a ship or two. If any
thing was available at a reasonable figure.
There has been such a differential In favor of
new-crop ships that owners arc not Inclined
to fix near-by vesseels at rates warranted by
the wheat market, most of them preferring to
hold their ships over until new-crop wheat Is
available. In this they are In a fair way to
make a mistake, as the fixture of the Herzogln

tial will shrink by new-crop ships declining
in value, Instead of near-by tonnsge appre

"Wheat . Sbovra Strength In Enat at
Flrat, Bat Slumps Toward Last.
CHICAGO. June 5. As a result of the ex
cessive rains Southwest over a large portion
of the Winter-wheat country, commission
houses had good buying order at the opening.
There was still out a good-sized short interest,
and both the leading elevator Interests and
the corn bull crowd supported the pit. These
Influences were too much for the unresponsive
cables. Export business was poor, and ship
ping sales hero were nil. With shorts covering
freely at the start, July made opening sales at
a shade lower to JiOKc higher, at 71i072He.
and after some wavering touched 72Hc The
wet weather was working against improvement
In the Spring country, but, despite this In
fluence and the good show of corn strength,
the early buyers were satisfied with small
profits. There seemed to be nq faith on the
bull side after the early bulge, and general
liquidation brought a sharp slump for July
down to 71U071?ic The outside interests are
very small In the market at present, and trad
ers feel that this Is partlj the reason for the
liquidation of the buying crowd. There was a
partial recovery toward the end of the session,
but July closed weak c down, at 710719c
Corn speculators were Inclined to a bearish
view of the market, but prices acted against
them. Considerable strength was shown most
of the session, although much of the advance
was lost when wheat broke. July closed firm,

SIXTEEX FURNACES ARE BANKED.
Strike of Iron "Workers Reduces Gen
eral Oatpnt 8 Per Cent.
CLEVELAND, June C The fton Tradn Re
view says: '
The strike of blast furnace workers In the
Mahoning and Shenango Valleys came on 4une
1, according to promise, and is practically
confined to the merchant furnaces. Sixteen
furnaces are banked, and two others have
taken this opportunity to make repairs. The
dally capacity of the 18 furnaces Is about 4100
tons, or 8 per cent of the total pig Iron pro
duction shown In the May statistics. Two
merchant furnaces in the Mahoning Valley
are still In operation. As yet the Steel Corpo-:
ration furnaces in tho valleys are active, as
Is the Sharon Steel Company's stack at South
Sharon, Pa.
The strike has not affected the Pittsburg
district. The companies whose men have gono
out have taken no steps In the matter, and
there will be no collective handling of tho
trouble. In a few cases a 10 per cent Increase
has been offered, but not accepted. The de
mand tor elght-bour shifts cannot be met. since
the supply of men is not more than adequate
under the 12-hour regime. It Is not improbable
that work will be resumed at some of the fur
naces within a week at some advance. In the
Buffalo district, a 10 per cent .advance was
given voluntarily last month, and this may be
the basis of adjustment in the valleys. The
United States Steel Corporation, which has
been receiving Iron from more than half the
Idle furnaces, will have its steel works output
curtailed by so much, and the strike will have
its effect also in shortening the raw material
supply of other steels works, as well as of
mills and foundries.
The anthracite strike has had no serious ef
fect on the Iron industry as yet, though several
Pennsylvania furnaces bsve had to bank from
time to time because coke shipments were not
sufficient.
The pig Iron sales of the week have Included
123,000 tons of Bessemer to various "Independ
ent" steel companies, deliveries running from
October 1 to April 1. For the most part. $20
at furnace was paid, but for some of the Iron
$20 50 and as high as $21. The Steel Corpora
tion Is expected to buy 16,000 tens for delivery
In the second quarter of 1003, but the negotia
tions will not be put through until tho furnace
strlko is over.
Purchases of basic Iron has been made, Vir
ginia basic being sold at $21 15 delivered Pitts
burg. The freight is $1 60.

Developments la Lafeor 'World tke
Most EeetlTe Factor la the
Werkaess.
NEW YORK, June 8. There was mora busi
ness In stocks today than on any" day of the
week. The Increased-activity was a result of
additional pressure to selL The disposition to
sell was not confined to any one. portion of
the list, and was quite evenly distributed
among the usually prominent stocks. The sell
ing was not urgent, but waa persistent, and
gained in volume towards the latter part of
tho day. Probably the most effective factor
in the weakness of the market was a general
feeling of anxiety over the developments In
tho labor world. The high tension to which
feeling has been raised In the anthracite re
gion, as shown by tho boycott measures and
the public demonstrations by friends of the
strikers, caused uneasiness, which was Inten
sified by the example of the violence in the
Chicago teamsters' strike
In the ranks of the operators and the finan
cial powers In the commercial Industry, there
was some feeling manifested over the step
taken by the New York Board of Trade -and
Transportation in sending a petition to the
President to Intervene and take measures to'.
effect a settlement of the questions In dis
pute. The report from Washlngtbn that the
suggestion was under consideration by -the
Chief Executive did not tend to reassure hold'
era of the stocks of coal-carrying roads, and
they sought to lighten their holdings. Reports
that strikers in tho valley Iron foundries wert
prepared to resume work, as pointed out In
this connection, had rather a depressing In?
fluence.than otherwise.
The Lake frelghthandlers strike and the
deal to curtail ore deliveries also received new
consideration. The reports of continued "heavy
orders for all grades of iron products for de
livery far into the future did not avail to re
lieve the heaviness of the United States SteeL
stocks and other iron Aid steel stocks. The
selling cf the grangers seemed to. be due, to
some extent, to 'reports of too abundant rains
in the Southwest, and also to the falling back
In the figures of receipts of corn. Tho late
reaction In tho grain markets, after early
strength, did not change the weak tone of the
grangers. Chicago & Northwestern was marked
up 2 points on the announcement of the long
heralded extra dividend on tho stock, but halt
of the gain was lost. Hocking Valley reflect
ed disappointment over the declaration of only
tho former dividend rate. The large proflt
taklng in Canadian Pacific &t a total reaction
of 4 points, bad a sympathetic effect on tha
whole list. Amalgamated Copper was depressed
by the weakness of the market for raw copper.
and was not affected by a trade circular point
ing out great improvement In the trade.
The continued rise in sterling exchange gave
rise to some apprehension that exchango had
started towards the gold export point on ac
count of the easier tone of the money market.
The approach of the crop-moving period is con
stantly narrowing the time before interior de
mands for currency will begin lo deplete the
supply of funds available for speculative use.
The combined effect of various Items of de
pression was a dribble of realizing all day,
which carried prices downward until the close,
which was easy, at the lowest.
Active liquidation of the Central of Georgia
income bonds had a depressing effect upon the
bond market. Total sales, $2,970,000. United
States bonds were all unchanged on the last
call.

Forelx Financial New.
NEW YORK, June 5. The Commercial Ad
vertiser's London financial cablegram says:'
There was a narrow buvlns of stocks today
r and a modified continuance of the bull liquida
tions. Consols revived and were at one time
80 1-18, closing at 90&. Americans were life
less, opening heavy.
New York sold a few Atchisons, Union Pacific
and Southern Railroad, causing H-potnt drops.
Canadian Pacific dropped sharply to 1334 on
American unloading. London will close at 1
P. M., Instead of 2 P. .M.. on Saturday, after
August 16.
Sale of Sheepskins at London.
LONDON, June 5. A sale of sheepskins was
held here today, at which 4254 skins were of
fered, nearly all of which were sold. There
was an average attendance present, who bid
for long-stapled merinos and fine crossbreds,
which sold freely at an average of 5 per cent.
Shorter grades were dearer. Long and coarse
stock sold at occasionally cheaper prices.
Cnlcnero Provisions.
CHICAGO, Juno 5. Provisions were weak.
There was a marked change In front by the
packers who have been buying of late, and
when they appeared as sellers prices, broke.. An
easy hog market was a bearish incentive. July
pork closed 26c lower, and ribs 7c lower.
