The local wheat market was such a tame af
fair yesterday that it showed no reflection of
tho weakness in the East, and prices were
nominally unchanged. The charter of the only
disengaged ship In the river, with a cargo al
ready provided for her, has had a tendency to
lessen the opportunities for new business, and
matters are Inclined to drift until there is an
improvement in the foreign market that will
warrant higher prices. The comparatively
small amount of wheat still held in the in
terior is in the hands of parties who are finan
cially able to hold It for an indefinite period
if the price does not suit them, and the In
difference with which they treat present quota
tions would indicate that they are not suited.
Despite the small amount of tonnage in sight
for immediate loading, freights are still drag
ging, distant tonnage showing a decline of
nearly 2s within the past month.

Dull and Listless Say, After a Slight
Advance.
CHICAGO, May 23. It was a dull day In
wheat until shortly before the close. Early in
the day there was some strength on cables
and light receipts. Price changes, however,
were very small most of the morning. July
opened a shatfe higher to unchanged at 740
74C, and sold up to 74&a After this slight ad
vance the market hung dull and listless. There
were numerous bearish incentives, but tho
bears were not Inclined early to do much With
them. Argentine shipments were liberally In
creased. The crop prospects were exception
ally good. In the last hour of business the
bears took advantage of the apparent lack of
energy in the wheat market and put on pres
sure. Liquidation brought out some stop-loss
orders; there was no export support, and prices
slumped to a weak close, July 52ic down,
at 73U073&C
Corn ruled the strongest of the pita until
wheat broke. The small receipts were bullish
in their effect, and country offerings were
small. But crop prospects were too good to
give the market any decided bullish snap.
Wheat had a weakening effect as the market
grew dull. July closed weak, -H0Kc lower,
at Blftc
Oats were the center of more interest than
for several days past. The general tone most
of the day was strong, but trade was light,
and the weakness in other grains worktd
against the early advance. July closed steady

Provisions had top narrow a mairket to allow
of the general liquidation that was forced by
longs unloading. The close was weak. July
pork closed 12tfc lower, lard and ribs, &37Kc
lower.

Linseed Stocks Rose on Rumors of a
Combination.
NEW YORK. May 23. Today's stock mar
ket was dull to the point of stagnation. The
prices In London Induced an Improvement at
the opening here, but It was lost through mere
inanimation. Until the last hour there was
hardly enough motive power to show any di
rection in the movement with tho exeention
of ome special stocks. There was aulte a
demand for the National Lead stocks, due to
the expectation that the company would bene
fit from a proposed, combination in an allied
branch of the trade. Tie American Linseed
stocks rose on rumors of a combination of the
vegetable oil interests. The firmness of Amal
gamated, Anaconda and Smelting was dhe to
the conUnued reports or the widening demand
for raw copper, both here and abroad. The
improvement in the copper trade is an in
fluence extending far beyond the stocks Imme
diately affected. The allegation Is made that
the recent heavy exports of copper are going
abroad, in part, at least as stocks art to get
the benefit ot the cheaper money rates over
there for holding purposes. There was a re
newal of the recent strength in Canadian Pa.
clfic. but when the advance reached 1& it
halted. Pacific Mail's 2-polnt rise was un
explained. The George Fuller siocks made
wide advances, and the New York public utll
lilts and Colorado Fuel developed late-strength.

gain by the banks on the Interior movement

Bankers are generally agreed that there has
bcenj). further heavy contraction of loans and
reduction of deposit liabilities. It will be seen
that the promise is for an extremely favorable
bank statement. Tho response la the stock
market was very moderate. Possibly this was
due to the fact that the Inward movement of
currency has been checked. New York ex
change at Chicago fell back today to near par,
compared with 00c premium early In the weak.
There was transferred today through the Sub
treasury $200,000 to New Orleans, following
the like amount transferred yesterday. There
was a call today for a 25 per cent installment
of cash on subscriptions to the steamship
merger syndicate, which calls for $12,500,000,
of which aboutG0 per cent Is payable in New
York. The transaction did not cause a ripple
today in the local money market. The deter
mined, waiting attitude of the market seems
to be due tc the uncertainty of the coal strike
and to the approach of the critical period ot
the corn crop. The latter Is receiving more
and more attention every day, and is destined
to have a greater influence on speculation than
any other one factor. Definite news Is also
awaited of the result of the Boer peace confer
ence. Confidence Is growing that there will be
a favorable outcome.
The bond market was dull, but firm. Total
salts, $2,200,000. United States bonds were all
unchanged on the last call.

A WAITER'S CRIME.
Mnrdercd His Wife Because She Was
' Slow in Preparing a Meal.
CHICAGO. May 23. Angered because
sufficient haste was not made with his
evening meal, Frederick Eberhart last
night shot his wife, Mary, four times at
their home, killing her instantly. Before
committing the crime Ebernart had
barred all the doors of the house and nls
wife fell dead apparently while trying to
make her escape by tho front way. The
police broke in the door and overpowered
Eberhart, who attempted to use his re
volver on them. Eberhart is a waiter, S3
years old. Mrs. Eberhart was four years
his Junior-.
Burglars Ran Dorrs'.
NEW YORK, May 23. In a wild chase
after burglars through Harlem streets
early today. 41 shots were fired. One bur
glar, Walter White, was shot in the tem
ple and instantly Wiled. The robbers,
three In number, were, discovered leaving
the store of an optician at 2038 Third ave
nue, by a watchman. He followed them
until he found a policeman, Then the
pursuit was on and the robbers began
shooting. The officer returned the fire. A.
few blocks further along one of the bur
glars fell. By this time id policemen had
joined In the chase, and a constant lire
was kept up on the remaining robbers,
who apparently had exhausted their .am
munition. At Fifth avenue they were
surrounded, and after being clubbed and
beaten they surrendered. Several bun
dles of valuables which they had stolen
were found In the street, where the bur
glars droppd them. None of the police-'
men were Injured In the flghL
Murderers Execateil.
WASHINGTON, May 23. Elijah Chap
man, colored, was hanged here today for
the murder of Ida Simmons, with whom
he had been living. Chapman returned
home drunk last New Year's day, and
after a. quarrel with the woman, plunged
a knife Into her heart.
BOONEVILLE, Mo., May 23. Charles
Reeves, alias "Spinner," was hanged here
today for the murder of his wife, Febru
ary 24. Twenty-five Missouri Sheriffs at
tended the execution.

CHICAGO, May 23. Eustln A. Batchel
der has been arrested charged with be
ing the leader of a gang of counterfeiters.
When the detectives broke Into his room
at 2S7 West Randolph street they found
about $3000 In spurious coins, composed
principally of 510 and $5 gold pieces. The
police say that Batchelder had a number
of confederates and that they have done
a great deal of counterfeiting In tho last
few months. Letters found in Batchel
der's room Indicate that he is the son of
a prominent resident of Jonesboro. Va.

PITTSBURG, May 23, Joseph Pearson,
a horse Jockey, was shot and killed by
his wife, Louise, at the latter's home In
Esplenborough, last night He was"h the
aqt of braining her with a hatched when
she fired point blank at his head. Mrs.
Pearson Is held pending the Coroner's
verdict.
