Two of the Failures Were' Expected,
but the Third Was n Surprise.
NEW TORK, May 5. In two cases the fail
ures today were fully expected, but the third
beanie as something of a surprise. There was
heavy liquidation on the- Stock Exchange
when they were announced, but the effective
support offered the general market checked
the Indiscriminate liquidation and Induced more
sober reflections. There is no doubt much dis
trust was felt for the fabric of cedlts gen
erally, owing to the ignorance of the extent
to which the collapse of the Webb-Meyer
stocks had Involved others. The development
in these stocks themselves was recognised to
be not of first importance. The collapse of
their prices naturally reduced the basis of
credits which had been acquired on the ficti
tious and manipulative valuation, but it did
not appear thAt the local money market had
ben used In taking out these credits, iNelther
hJ the dazzling-rise a the nrices for these

securities attracted any great speculative
following. "The trouble was thus localized
within a comparatively small circle of Im
mediate participants In the speculation.
This was soon demonstrated by the move
ment of the general market and the absence
of financial trouble in other quarters. There
was the fear this -morning that the results
must be faced of similar operations of other
pools in various specialties, and even of
manipulative advances In standard railway
stocks; but the readiness with which offer
ings were absorbed quieted the nervous ex
citement and Induced some buying back of
stocks by hasty sellers. In fact, the day's net
losses are found to be quite Insignificant as
a rule, and not a few important stocks Sosed
higher than Saturday.
Influence of the Crops.
The reports ,of copious rains in the South
west and the effective breaking of the drouth
conditions which have kept awake anxiety re
garding the crops, was a material aid to the
recovery. The persistent upward course of
Louisville & Kashvlllc was a sustaining In
fluence. .Rumors were renewed of a combina
tion of this road with the Chicago. Indianap
olis & Louisville. The prospect of a strike on
the part of the anthracite miners and a
stringency of the money market will amply ac
count for a repression of speculation. As a
I matter of fact, the active liquidation of the
first hour accounted for the early one-nan oi
the day's total dealings. Money loaned as
high as 20 per cent, and receded to 6 per cent
only after tho principal demand had . been
met. There can be no doubt the discrimina
tion against the collateral and the unfavor
able disposition developed among money
lenders toward the recent Indiscriminate ten
dency of the speculation were factors In the
money stringency. The squeezlng-out pro
cess along this line Is viewed with satis
faction. The knowledge that credits are very
liberally expanded at present and that the
rather meager cash' reverses are subject to
heavy demands has caused real anxiety t6
be felt from the reckless speculation indulged
In In somo quarters.
Some of the speculative bonds were weak
under forced liquidation, but the market re
covered and became irregular In sympathy with
stocks. Total sales, (4,030,000. United States
bonds were all unchanged on the last call.

The markets were quiet today, and Inclined
to be dulL Funds weakened on the announce
ment of a new $2,500,000 Indian 3 per cent
loan. There was very little local business In
the American department, but the tone was
heavy on the possibility of a strike In the
coal region and the stock brokerage failures In
New York. That quarter sold Eries. Readings,
Union Pacific and Atchison a full point down,
while Canadian Pacific lost 2. Money was

Chicago "Wheat Declines Under Good
Crop Xevrs.
CHICAGO, May 5. Bears started In to dom
inate wheat at the 'sound of the opening gong.
Bearish news was at hand in good array.
Cables were lower, receipts wore improv
ing, but greatest of all factors was the heavy
rains that had come to the relief of Kansas
and Nebraska. Estimates of the Kansas
wheat yield that had. been as low as 25.000,000
but a week ago were raised today by con
servative people to 50.000,000. St. Louis and
Kansas City sold heavily. July wheat opened
4c lower, at 75U3754c, touched 75c and
then slumped to 74H374c There was a
large short Interest in wheat, and on the
decline offerings were absorbed. Prices for
July rallied to 75c, but at the close was weak,
l&c lower, at 7475c.
Corn ruled weak on the Influence of rains
and the depression In wheat. July closed i
c lower, at G0i600c. Rains had a weak
ening effect In oats, and under the Influence of
the breaks In other grains declined steadily.
July closed ie lower, at 354c Steady hog
prices at the yard held, prices In provisions
from slumping in the pit. The close was
about steady. July pork was a shade lower,
and lard and ribs 24c down.

ket for today was steady, with spot closing at
$2S 23Q28 30, which Is a slight recession in
values. Business was slow. At London prices
fell off 2s Cd for spot, and 5s for futures,
with spot at 130 10s, and futures at 123
12s 6d.
Copper was somewhat Irregular here, but
closed with prices generally a shade better,
with standard spot to August at $11611 25;
Lake spot. $11 75012; electrolytic, $11 624
11 75; and casting $11 5011 75. The London
market was 2s Cd higher, with spot and futures
at 32 178 6d.
Lead ruled steady and unchanged here at
$4 124. and London Is 3d lower, at 11 123 Cd.
