COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL NEWS
It was a bad day for woolgrowers and dairy
men la the local market yesterday, but Quite
favorable for potato growers. A sensational
drop of 2c per pound In the Eastern -wool mar
ket, due to the strike, was reflected In the local
market, some buyers remaining out altogether,
wnlla others put out quotations In keeping with
ilw -decline In the East- The extent of the
trouble cannot be determined at present, but
xintll there la an adjustment, prices will suffer.
The butter market, which was decidedly "wob
bly" at 20c on Monday, lost Its balance yes
terday, and tumbled to 17c for best cream
ery, and some sales were made as low as 10c
Hecelpts were very heavy, and some dealers
are predicting still lower prices. Potatoes were
wearing again yesterday, and as high as $1 75
$or cental was paid for some fancy stock, al
though this figure was more than some deal
ers would pay. and the bulk of the sales were
wade around ?1 50 and $1 G3. Receipts are In
creasing again and, from present appearances
the next steamer will take out a much heavier
consignment than went forward on the last one.
Poultry was very scarce yesterday, and It Is a
continual "scrap" among retailers to secure
enough to meet their demands. Some choice
1802 Springs sold at ?6 per dozen, and old
chickens were In demand from $5 50 to $7 per
3oxen. Eggs were 6teady at unchanged prices.
Mew potatoes were slightly lower, at 3c per
pound. A carload of bananas arrived yesterday,
some or them being a little too ripe for ship
ping, but In. good condition for the hawkers.
Groceries show but -little change. Beans are
firmer, but not quotably higher. Lard and pro
visions are higher.

PORTLAND MARKETS.
Grain, Flonr, Etc.
The Eastern wheat market steadied up a lit
tle yesterday, and this, together with a fairly
good tone to the cables, kept the local market
steady, but quotations are still to a consider
able extent nominal. The wheat is pretty well
cleaned out of most sections, and those who
are still holding demand fancy figures. The
big lot mentioned In The Oregontan's news
columns as sold by W. H. Babcock was all
choice blucstem. and was divided up among
half a dozen buyers at Tacoma. The price
paid was C7He, and is said to be about lc above
the export value, based on 25s ships, which
are not available Just at present, except for
big carriers. No new transactions are reported
In freights, even new-crop ships being neg
lected again. "Weather conditions are quite
favorable east of the mountains, but In the
Valley nearly all prospects of getting In any
Spring grain have vanished, and the acreage
of that variety will be about the smallest it
has been at any time In the past 10 years.

STEW YORK STOCK MARKET.
Strong Evidence of a Diminishing
Speculative Interest.
NEW YORK. April 20. The movement of
prices was confined and Irregular throughout
the day, and there was evldcnco of & diminish
ing speculative interest. The wide movements
in high-priced stocks continued a feature, but
the Influence of the advances was Impaired by
some equally notable relapse in stocks where
attempts were made to take profits. A case
In point was that of New York, New Haven &
Hartford, which fell violently 0 points on an
attempt to market a small amount of stocks
because of the emphatic disclaimers from both
Pennsylvanlan and New York Central author
ities of the rumors of purchase of control.
There was a late rally of .several points In the
stock. New York Central and Pennsylvania
also quieted down from their recent activity
and strength. In fact, there was xery little
show of strength throughout the Eastern rail
road field.
The session of the Joint committee of oper
ators and miners todlscuss disputed points In
the anthracite field was a 'repressive influence
on all coalers. The decrease reported In Read
ing surplus earnings for March was an un
favorable influence. The very heavy decrease
In net earnings of the Southern Railway for
March was certainly not a stimulating In
fluence, although It was accounted for largely
by the notable Increase In operating expenses.
The Western railroads, on the other hand,
were benefited by the crop news, and by the
weekly crop bulletin of the weather report,
which was considered very favorable, not only
regarding the condition of Winter wheat, but
as to the progress made In seeding corn and
Spring wheat. The grain-carrying railroads
also were helped by the special strength of the
Northwestern stocks, which rose 10 and 5,
respectively. Rock Island gained an extreme
5?4. but lost over 2 points of It. The strength
of the Wabash stocks, and of the Wheeling &
Lake Erie stocks was evidently due to the ap
parent certainty that the bid of the syndicato
representing the Gould Interest for the West
ern Maryland will be accepted.
The Industrials were marked by quite as
great Irregularity as the railroads, and changes
there were constant and variable A further
advance In the foreign market and a drop In
the rate of sterling t Parts, both contributed
to narrow the margin still remaining from the
gold export point. The money market, how-i
ever, was still undlsturoed.
The bond market maintained a firm tone to
day. Total sales, $3,770,000. United States
bonds were all unchanged on the last call.
Closing Stoclc Quotations.

ket looked tired of waiting for peace In South
Africa, and the holiday on Thursday was not
without Influence. American shares were quiet,
hardened slightly early, and advanced more
rapidly on New York's support of St. Paul.
Atchison and Union Pacific accompanied by
good crop news. Grand Trunks were very
strong on the excellent revenue statement.
Canadian Pacific hung back on Its statement,
which was regarded as disappointing.
Silver Is flat at 23d per ounce on American
pressure to sell, with no Eastern support.
England is beginning to understand that the
ocean trust Is not an acquisition of British

Professional Buying In Wheat at
Chicago Advances Prices Sllshtly.
CHICAGO, April 29. Wheat was firm and
higher at the opening. Liverpool cables did not
show a decided response to the break here yes
terday. Receipts were still small, and Kansas
was still sending in reports of her crop condi
tion. Both the Northwest and Southwest con
tradicted the report that farmers' deliveries
were more liberal, and said wheat was as hard
to buy from first hands as at any time. Re
ports from North Dakota said this condition
covered much of the field. On the other hand,
rains were copious in most of the Ohio "Valley.
There was a little spurt of buying at the start,
but. as on yesterday, this turned to a selling
pressure later, and early gains were lost. Pro
fessionals, however, continued to buy In the
dull market, and prices reacted slightly. July
opened c higher to unchanged, at 75075.

Fair buying by the most prominent bull In
terests supported corn today. Trade, however,
was dull. July closed firm, 3c up, at 63
C03e.
Oats received no assistance from corn or
wheat. The recent heavy rains were deemed
beneficial to the sown oats .and receipts were
much more liberal than of late. July closed
weak, c lower, at 36c.

OFFICIAL CROP REPORT.
"Winter Wheat Makes Good Progress
on the Pacific Coast.
WASHINGTON, April 29. The Weather Bu
reau's weekly summary of crop conditions con
tains the -following:
Much-needed and generally abundant rains
fell over a large part of the Missouri, Upper
Mississippi and Lower Ohio Valleys, but condi
tions of drouth have continued In the Upper
Ohio "Valley. Middle Atlantic States and over
the Southeastern Rocky Mountain slope. Rain
Is now very generally needed over the greater
part of the Southern States. A heavy snow
storm Interfered with farm work in Montana,
the Dakotas and Minnesota during the early
part of the week, and the high and drying
winds of the latter part. In the Central Val
leys and Middles States were detrimental. The
temperature conditions in the Southern States
and in the Northern districts east of the Mis
sissippi were 'cry favorable, but the week
was too cool for favorable growth In the Rocky
Mountain and North Pacific Coast States. On
the Pacific Coast, Winter wheat has made fa
vorable progress. A heavy crop is promised
In California, north Of Tehachlpl. The fruit
outlook continues promising, except fdf peaches
in portlchs of the central valleys.

Dreyfns Admitted His Gnllt.
CHICAGO, April 23. Alleged secrets of
tile Bteytua caae Were confided to Uni
versity of Chicago students by Hughes
Leroux. The French lecturer declared
that Captain Dreyfus admitted guilt at
the time he was pardoned.
"Captain Dreyfus not only was guilty of
conspiracy against the French Govern
ment, hilt he confessed to a number of
charges and asiced fof mercy when sign
ing a petition for a pardon," was the
statement with which the French lawyer
and lecturer astonished his audience.
"That Dreyfus actually admitted his
guilt Is not generally known, even by peo
ple who endeavored to follow the case
closely in all its phases."
M. Deroux explained to the students
that his knowledge of the case came
largely from the fact that he was asked
by friends of Captain Dreyfus to take up
the defense of the prisoner.
