THE MORNING OBEGONIAlrf, TUESDAY APRIL 8. 1902.

COMMERCIAL AND
The commission-house portion of Front street
was the liveliest section in the wholesale dis
trict yesterday. The California steamer arriv
ing Saturday evening brought a large consign
ment of vegetables and fruit, and this stock
was Increased by heavy arrivals by rail yes
terday morning, A carload of bananas also
arrived yesterday, most of them In excellent
condition. The distribution of all this truck
made the street a pretty lively place, in spite
of the Inclemency of the weather. There were
but few changes In prices since Saturday. The
advance in sugar on Saturday was strictly a
local affair, and accordingly had no bearing on
the question at issue regarding the price of
sugar. No further changes are announced, and
local dealers state that none will occur until
they are made at headquarters. Eggs are hold
ing steady, with enough going Into cold storage
to prevent prices going any lower. Butter is
coming in very freely, and prices are main
tained with some difficulty. One firm received
orders yesterday for shipments to be made to
Japan, Alaska and Mexico, and if this outside
trade could be sufficiently developed, the largo
Increase In output may be taken care of with
out very low prices. The local hop market was
strong on new-crop contracts, with nothing
doing in old crop. Ad,vlces from the East re
port a pretty stiff market, the New "Fork Jour
nal of Commerce, under date of April 2, having
the following:
A decidedly strong tone dominated the mar
ket, especially for state hops. It was reported
by some that never within the history of the
present generation of the hop trade has the
s'o-k of hops remaining in growers hands been
co small. According to some reports, within
the past few days, local dealers have been
good buyers up the state, paying .full prices,
and have purchased at least 500 bales; this buy
Irg has appeared to be, at least In part, in
anticipation of further buying by exporters.
There also was a report In circulation to the
effect that some dealers have endeavored to con
tract for 1002 state hops at 15c, but that they
have met v.ltb. only Indifferent success. The
cle of the market was firm, with choice
grades of state quoted at IS18Hc, and some
dealers naming as high as 19a"

PORTLAND MARKETS.
Grain. Floor. Etc.
The wheat market was disturbed by conflict
ing emotions yesterday. There was a fairly
heavy decrease In the American visible, and
some strength in foreign cables, but world's
shipments and quantities on passage are still
abnormally heavy for the time of year, and
the East sagged, with Coast markets showing
the usual bond of sympathy. The close showed
a slight improvement in New York and Chi
cago, but there was nothing doing locally, and
quotations remain nominal and unchanged. No
rales are reported, and until some ships are
chartered, there will be no inducement or ob
ject for the purchase of wheat, as it is too
firmly held to admit of buyers getting hold of
It at prices which make it a good speculative
commodity. Another cargo of California barley
reached Portland Sunday, and the local demand
seems to bo of sufficient proportions to keep
prices quite firm. Crop prospects continue very
bright, the only complaint now heard being
from the Valley, where there Is so much rain
that It is Interfering with Spring plowing.

NEW YORK STOCK MARKET.
Lessened Money Supply Counteracted
CpTvanl Tendency ot Last Week.
"NEW YORK. April i7. The upward move
ment of stocks, which had attained some head
way during the latter part of last week, did
not prosper today, in face of the rapidly con
tracting supplies in the' money market. The
stocks which were made the leaders of Lost
week's movement were the chief sufferers from
the selling. The total volume of dealings fell
considerably below the 1.000.000-share mark
touched on Friday, with considerably more of
the total made up of St. Paul, Louisville &
Nashville and Union Pacific. The selling cost
St. Paul 2. Louisville & Nashville 1 and
Union Pacific .
This course of events naturally detracted
somewhat from conjectures as to the source of
the heavy demand for these stocks and the
community of Interest and merger project
which might be aimed at. Wall street's sus
picion of last week that the movement was a
speculative maneuver to invite a following in
the general market was strengthened. The ab
rupt reaction In these stocks as a result of the
developments in the money market was chiefly
remarkable from the fact that those develop
ments were generally admitted to be Impend
ing last week.
The answer made to thU- was the abundance
of capital in the West would relieve the situation
and would give free scopo to the buying of
stoks. But when the call money rate shot up
to 7 per cent this afternoon, the highest point
of the season, this assurance did not avail to
prevent throwing over of large account of
stock. All portions of the list were affected,
and today's losses run quite generally from 1 to
2, and over that in exceptional cases. Amalga
mated Copper Ignored the general tendency of
the market, as it did when the market was
going up, and rose at -the last of the day to
4 over last week. Other firm spots were in
the local tractions, some of the express stocks,
Westinghouse Electric, Chicago &. Alton, the
Wisconsin Central stocks and the Duluth, South
Shore and Atlantic stocks.
The action of the day's grain markets gae
some Intimation that last week's stock-market
assumptions of the safety of the Winter -wheat
crop were somewhat premature. But the flurry
in the money market was the- overshadowing
Influence, and the market 'closed actlte and
easy, and generally at the lowest.
A few of the newer bond Issues were ad
vanced, but the general tendency was slightly
easier in sympathy with stocks. Total sales,
par value, $4,540,000. United States bonds were
all unchanged on the last call.
Closing: Stock Quotations.

Chicago Wheat Started Out Bullish,
bnt Closed 3-Sc Down.
CHICAGO, April 7. At the outset there were J
numerous bullish Influences at work In the
wheat pit. Cables were steady, and the mar
ket was also helped by a big drop In tempera
ture. The Kansas state report was the early
bull factor. This estimate, which Saturday
was reported at 74. was corrected today to a
condition of only 70, as compared with 105 a
year ago. The report also showed a loss of
400,000 In the acreage from last year, and a
possible decrease In the yield of 30.000.000
bushels. Other states had been sending In
lower estimates, and these Influenced an upturn
In prices. May wheat opened K)is up, at
7171Hc Shorts covered, there was some
good buying and prices held firm for some time.
A Chicago paper printed an exhaustive report
of crop condItl9nsvhlch, In spite of the dam
ages In the Southwest, promised about the
.same crop as last year. This factor, together
with large weekly shipments and a smaller
decrease In the visible supply of 1,000,000 bush
els less than had been expected, wore away
the edge of the bullish enthusiasm, and wheat
began to weaken. Corn, which had some fair
early support, also turned weak and helped
push wheat backward. May wheat declined to
70709tc but the bulls turned In again to the
support of tho market. Shorts covered again,
and there was a good rally. May closing Arm,
-74c higher, at 7171Xc
Corn ruled weak again. At the opening the
pit crop loaded up pretty well with long .stuff,
and when wheat eased they tried to sell, but
found nobody wanted It at the high prices.
May closed weak, Vic down, at 6768c
There was little Interest In oats. May closed
c&sy, c down, at 42Uc.
Provisions fluctuated widely again on manip
ulation. The opening prices were higher on
the better hog market and the grain strength.
Liquidation soon set In. .however. and carried
all prices downward. May pork closed 5c low
er, lard 12VSc down, and ribs 12V4c lower.
