Liberal produce receipts and a fairly steady
market In most lines marked the beginning of
another week. It was feared that the ship
ment of 6300 sacks of potatoes on the last
California steamer -would affect the San Fran
cisco market adversely, but no weakness was
shown yesterday. The steamer has not yet
reached San Francisco, but the effect of the
arrival of the potatoes has been discounted, as
every dealer In the Bay City at all Interested
In the matter has been advised as to the
amount of stock that will be dumped on the
market on her arrival. A carload of very
line bananas came In yesterday too ripe to
Icecp well but In fine condition for Immediate
use. The egg market held steady, with re
ceipts a little more 'moderate than on the
closing days of last week. Dealers are divided
in their opinion as to the future of the market,
but none of them looks for very much strength
In prices. Poultry was all cleaned out of the
market last Saturday, and good prices aro al
most certain to prevail this week. Butter was
very Arm for the best grades. There was no
change In the grocery markets, but sugar con
tinues In a very unsettled condition, and fur
ther declines arc not Improbable, as there Is
more In the oountry than Is needed.

Grain, Flour, Etc.
The Eastern markets threw off a considerable
portion of the gain of last week, and bearish
statistics gave wheat a bad das 'all round, ex
cept in Europe. In the Portland market the
ruling quotations were around 65c and 6514c
for Walla Walla, but as usual there was very
little selling. Shipowners are still holding off.
and will not accept rates that exporters could
pay, and work new business. Twenty-flve shil
lings Is obtainable, and a small ship might be
fixed for a shade more, but it would be almost
an Impossibility to charter three ships, even at
25s, so long as there is so little wheat selling.
Reports from the Interior show the damage to
the growing crop to be slightly overestimated,
and with anything like favorable weather for
re-seeding the possibilities for much of a
shortage In the output from this source are
very remote. The flour trade Is easier, and a
few of the mills in the interior have already
commenced to shorten sail on account of the
poor demand for flour, 'and the difficulty In se
curing wheat at a reasonable figure.

Belated Borrowers Ran Up Money
Rate by Their Competition.
NEW YORK, March 10. Efforts were made
to contest the Influence of the Saturday bank
statement, during the early hours of today's
stock market, but late in the day belated bor-

rowers ran up the money rate by their bidding
against each other, and predictions were heard
from the best authorities that money would
rule higher In the Immediate future. The dis
aster to the British arms In South Africa, had
a strong sentimental effect, although the direct
influence was restrained by the fact that the
London stock market was closed when the
news was received. Traders here sold stocks
on the supposition that the news will Induce
some liquidation for London account, and also
may affect the money market by accentuating
tho pressure for gold In London.
Reports by accepted authorities that tho
condlUon of Winter wheat was not promising
was also a bearish influence Tho wholo mar
ket gave way and closed active and weak,
with a large number of leading stocks from
1 to 214 points lower than Saturday's closing
price There were many assurances put forth
this morning, apparently In concert, that noth
ing was to be feared from the money market.
In spite of the low stage of tho reserves. The
principal burden of these arguments was to
the effect that a large proportion of the pres
ent large, loans of the New Tork clearing
house banks are to railroad and Industrial syn
dicates, made up of the most prominent capi
talists. The point Is also made that sufficient
account has not been taken of the great ex
pansion in, capital and surplus of the banks,
and exaggerated account taken of the small
Increase in cash reserves. These arguments
evidently had some force, but they were not
sufficient to dissuade the small speculator from
selling out stocks when ho saw the Index finger
of the money rate pointing to higher figures.
Tho principal feature of today's market was
the renewal of the upward movement in Colo
rado Southern stocks and large buying of Mex
ican Central and Mexican National securities.
In tho bond market tho feature was the buy
ing of Mexican Central firsts income and
Standard Rope & Twine 6s. Otherwise, tho
market was quiet and irregular. Total sales,
$3,855,000. United States bonds were un
changed on tho last calL

Tho stock starket wm Idle and dull through-
out the session. The capture of a Boer maga
zine of arms and ammunition was counteracted
by the disquieting news about the health Of
Cecil Rhodes, and hints that trouble is brew
ing between Russia and Japan. Kaffirs were
very flat after the close of business In the
street on the announcement In tho House of
Commons that tho Boers had captured General
Methuen, 400 men and four guns. Consols
dropped 14 to fH on the exchange, but the
capture of Methuen at that time was only
rumored.
American stocks did not really open till
New Tork came slightly harder.
Gold to the amount of 219,000 arrived from
Holland on Saturday, and 25,000 additional
today.

CHICAGO. March 10. At the start In the
wheat pit there was a goodly array of bullish
arguments; cables were firm; continued dry
weather was reported in the Winter wheat
belt; crops were light, and commission-houses
had good buying orders.
Coarse grains wero Improved and aided in
tho upturn. Under these influences May opened
9s54c up, at 781477c and advanced to
78c. On the advance numerous longs who
had bought early last week sold for profits.
Prices steadied for some time abound 78c, but
when reports arrived of rfhowers In some local
ities of Kansas and Nebraska, the prop under
wheat gavo way, selling became general and
somewhat heavy, and prices declined. There
was much speculation as to what tho Govern
ment report of grain In farmers' hands would
state. May closed weak, c lower, at 77c
Corn was influenced chiefly by wheat, ruling
firm at the outset and sagging off on nearlsh
news, though not to such an extent as wheat.

were noted In the tin market here and abroad.
There was a substantial gain over tho prices
last quoted here, while the gain at London
amounted to 15s, closing spot there at 115 15s
and futures at 112 5s. The local quotation
was 2640284c for spot, with March quoted at
25K0284C, and April at 254025c
Copper was steady here, with Lake un
changed at 12C124c; electrolytic and casting
at 12012c The London market for copper
was 12s 6d lower, closing with spot at 54 2s M
and futures at 64.
Lead was steady but quiet at New York, with
4c quoted. London was Is 3d lower, at 11
fa 2d. Spelter was dull and unchanged at
$4 22404 27. London closed unchanged at
17 15s.
Iron was steady but unchanged at New York.
Pig Iron warrants were nominal. No. 1 foun
dry Northern. $18019; No. 1 foundry Southern,
$17 50018; No. 1 foundry soft. $17 50018. The
English markets were a shade lower. Glasgow

Cruelty Charges Overdrawn.
CHICAGO. March 10. Reports of In
creasing cruelty among American troops
In dealing with Filipinos are discounte
nanced by General E. S. Otis, who de
clares that an American soldier is not ca
pable of the brutality -which has been ac-
credited to him, sayvs the Tribune. "Re
venge was not wreaked upon Filipinos by
United States troops while I was in the
Islands," said General Otis. "That was
not the spirit of the troops. . Whenever
occasional cases of cruelty came to tho
ears of officers, rigid investigations were
made and adequate punishment given.
There Is less trouble with the natives as
time wears on, and I am certain that the
reports of cruelty are overdrawn."
Anaconda Company Bays Claim.
BUTTE. Mont. March 10. It Is report
ed that the Anaconda Company has ac
quired the Denier claim of T. M. Hod
gens and Mns. Lulu Largey. The Denier
Is situated between the Midnight. Boston
and Montana property, and the Nnppa,
a claim owned by the Anaconda Company.
The deed has not been filed for record, but
the price paid for the property Is said to
be about $75,000.
