THE MOgNING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 1&02... s
13
COMMERCIAL AND
Bad weather and the last dnr of the month
combined to make yesterday a rather dull Fri
day, and business in most liner ta of email
proportions. Delayed m trains from the -couth
have Interfered with receipts of produce, and
In some lines the street was almost bare yes
terday. Sweet potatoes are very scarce, and a
carload which was started north two days ago
has been ordered back to San Francisco on ac
count of the blockade. Poultry was very firm
yesterday, and eggs were correspondingly
weak. Some sales were made as low as 18Hc.
arid but few were attempting to secure more
than 19c. The weather held back wagon re
ceipts of potatoes, but the river steamers all
brought In the usual liberal consignments, and
the market shows no sign of recovery Onions
have strengthened up a little on an Improve
ment In the -shipping demand, but the market
Is by no means active. Grocery markets shared
In the ease In other directions, which Is always
bo pronounced on the last day of the month,
and no changes were noted.

PORTLAND MARKETS.
Grata, Flottr, Etc
The Eastern wheat market firmed up a little
yesterday, and tho foreign market held steady.
In the Portland market there were no transac
tions of consequence reported, all of the sales
that were to be made on account of "March
taxes having apparently been taken care of.
Walla Walla was quoted around 60c, but it was
generally admitted that little or nothing could
be moved at that figure. Tho freight situation
remains unchanged. Twenty-five shillings can
be secured, but owners are again holding for
higher rates. Another disengaged ship arrived
In yesterday, but as she has not been offering.
It Is not known what her owners intend to do
with her. Nitrate freights are stiffening up to
-such an extent that some of the disengaged
vessels are making an effort to secure lumber
freights down to the west coast at very low
rates, in preference to accepting wheat char
ters at present figures.

NEW YORK STOCK MARKET.
Forecast at Bank Statement Drags
' Prices Down.
NEW YORK, Feb. 28. The forecast fo the
bank statement the prospect of additional
heavy requirements upon New York bank re
servesovercame the market today and dragged
prices downr The decjlne toward the latter
part of the trading showed more consistency
than any previous movement during the week.
Prices of all classes of stocks were alike af
fected, bot! the minor specialties, among which
FINANCIAL NEWS
there had been some show of strength earlier
in the day, and the leading standard stocks,
which had lain lnrt until the selling move
ment began. The liquidation was not urgent,
and showed no signs of being forced, but it was
evident that It was thought best to be prepared
for contingencies In tho money market and take
In all sail possible.
The preliminary figures of the week's cash
movement, as usually published on Friday,
which Include the known movement of money
up to Thursday night, indicate that the banks
have lost nearly $0,000,000 in cash during the
week. The exports of -gold called for exactly
$3,513,823. The routine Subtreasury operations
took $2,893.1,4. The regular export movement
to the Interior was In favw of New Tork to
the extent of over .$1,000,000, and today there
was deposited at the Bubtreasury $500,000 for
transfer to Chicago, which would about wipe
out the earlier gains by the banks.
The loan item remains in the usual obscurity,
but there has been no Important stock market
liquidation. Syndicate subscriptions to the glu
cose and starch combination havp-fceen called,
and there is a possibility that the gold exports
represent the paying off of foreign obligations
on their transfer to local banks, as was the
case with the last gold that went out. There
Is no hope, therefore, of anything but a very
weak bank return tomorrow.
Beyond the persistent firmness of the foreign
exchange, indications are that further gold will
go out by export next week. The first deposit
at the Subtreasury for transfer to the West Is
generally anticipated as the turning movement
-of currency away from New Toric again to
meet the usual Spring requirements in the in
terior. The request to the Treasury authorities
for permission to deposit gold in ""New Tork
to be drawn on at San Francisco foreshadows a
further .movement, which promises to reach
nearly $10,000,000, and which Is connected with
syrittlcato payments for street railway proper
ties. With surplus reserves of the banks, last
Saturday already down to the modest showing
of $12,450,050, the outlook ceems somewhat
formidable for speculators on margins who are
dependent upon the call loan market for ac
commodation with which to carry their hold
ings. The day's net losses run over a point'
for some of the Important stocks.
The bond market was dull. Total sales,
$3,230,000. United States bonds were un
changed. Closing: Stqck Quotations.

Baltimore, has practically closed a deal for

An Advance in All the Pits of Chi
cago, With Corn In the Lead.
CHICAGO, Feb. 28. Corn was again active
and steady, and led in the -advance that marked
all pjt trading. Cables, small wheatacceptanccs
over-night, and some fair early buying started
bullish sentiment again. To this was ndded
the Influence of the heavy rains in tho West,
which, it was argued, would further embarrass
the country movement. Commission trade was
in good volume. Cash people reported Liverpool
markets out of line and too low. There was
heavy selling of long stuff as the market ad
vanced by local people who bought a few days
ago. May closed strong, o higher, at 02
062c
AVheat opened less active and lower today, but
soon began to feel the strength In corn and
oats, and ruled very firm. Cables were disap
pointing, and early offerings were met with
low prices. The general rains and liberal
Northwest receipts were additional bearish fac
tors. Bears began short selling at the outset.
The general business was not large, but St.
Louis began turning strong and the "crop
klllcr" again talked of damage in Kansas and
Oklahoma. Statistical papers made favorable
reports of the crop condition, but traders who
had sold short became frightened when they
saw the spurts in corn and oats and covered.
All told, the wheat market was nervous. May
opened c lower tq unchanged at 7676c
