A landslide In wheat In the East vras about
the only feature of Interest in the market
situation yesterday, and, as the weakness In
the East did not affect the local market to
any appreciable extent. It was not seriously
regarded here. Produce receipts, as usual on
Monday, were of moderate proportions, and
prices showed but little change since Satur
day. There seems to be a wide difference of
opinion regarding eggs. Some dealers declare
their Inability to get over 20 cents, while
others sold all day yesterday at 22V& cents.
The outside demand Is slackening again, and
as receipts are Increasing, prices will un
doubtedly recede by the close of the week.
Potatoes are still weak. In sympathy with a
poor market In San Francisco.. Onions are
holding their own, and some dealers are pre
dicting an advance. The street was falrlx
well cleaned up on California produce, but the
steamer arriving last evening has a plentiful
supply, which will be on the market this
morning. Veal and pork were well cleaned
up Saturday, but, as the demand Is always
light early In the week, prices show no change.
Oats and barley have not shared In the weak
ness in wheat, and both are still commanding
good prices, selling at high figures.

The local wheat market was steady yester
day, in spite of a slump In the East, and,
while Fome of the exporters were indifferent
about quoting over G5 cents for Walla Walla,
It was still possible to secure 00 cents for
the cereal, and there were the usual reports
of even higher prices being paid at Interior
jpolnts. Some exporters seem to think that
the bottom has been reached on freights, and
yesterday two vessels were reported fixed, one
at 23s fld on spot at this port, and the other
at 2Gs3d, to arrive on Puget Sound. "While
this is slightly higher than the last previous
charter In this port, other ships are reported
to be willing to accept 25 shillings. Three
direngaged ships have arrived within the past
4S hours, and, as a number of other are due,
there Is but little strength in the situation.
Another, cargo finished loading yesterday, and
this, with one exception, will be the last for
the month.

Speculation "Was Qalet, Except In
Smaller Railroads.
NEW TORK, Feb. 24. The stock market
sank back again Into the professional traders'
hands today, and there was no Important
movement, except In a few stocks of smaller
railroads, not allied to any of the great sys
tems, and in some minor industrials. The de-

cllncs established for American stocks In Lon
don since the close hero on Friday afternoon
had to be faced at the opening. This caused
a lower level at first than on last Friday,
but prices were at no time down to the
London parity, and they soon began to re
cover. In spite of selling- on arbitrage on Lon
don account at the advance.
The confidence that the Supreme Court would
refuse Jurisdiction in Minnesota's suit against
the Northern Securities Company, which has
been firmly held in Washington for three
weeks, was unimpaired this morning, and
the traders did some of their buying on that
basis. The announcement of the decision by
the court failed to attract any outside de
mand, and the efforts of the traders to take
their profits caused a reaction In the market
and an easy closing. The decision of the Ad
ministration to push the case against the
Northern Securities Company deprived the other
suit of much of its Importance, but the fact
remains that one' possible course 6f proced
ure against the company Is closed by this
decision, and a step thus achieved toward the
establishment of the company's status. It is
generally felt that all possible courses of pro
cedure will have to be met In the same way.
The professionals who were on the bull side
today exchanged assurances that the Admin
istration's suit against the company might
bo regarded as In the nature of a friendly
process to establish the true standing of that
company under the law. and the visit to Wash
ington of some of the principal financiers In
terested was regarded as a favoring factor for
the outcome of the case. This sort of argu
ment was not so convincing but that the
professional traders kept keenly alert to
each other's movements, and when Important
selling to realize developed all turned to th
selling side.
The largest dealings wero In stocks which
moved under Individual Influences. In sugar
the Influence was disappointment over the
measure agreed upon by the ways and meant
committee regarding the duty on Cuban sugar.
Amalgamated Copper was affected by tho re
ported sale to It of a mine and the removal of
threatened litigation. Tennessee Coal was a
feature at an extreme advance of 3V4 on ru
mors of a resumption of dividends. Dealings
In Southern Pacific continued large, but the
movement In the stock was small.
Foreign exchange continued to advance to
day. Influenced by London's selling of securi
ties here and the small supply of commercial
exchange, bills, but the local money market
continued easy.
The bond market showed some degree of
firmness, but business was not large, except
In the Wabash debentures. Total sales, pur
-alue. $3,490,000. United States 3s. coupon, de
clined & and the registered 3s advanced 4. on
the last call.

Stocks were quietly steady today, pending
the settlement, save In the case of South Af
rican shares, which opened firm and then
sagged. The public is out of the market,
and Insiders are holding off, thinking that the
weak .element has not yet been shaken out.
The American department opened weak, but
the bull faction rallied prices when New York
came as a buyer, particularly of Union Pa

Prices Relapsed Under a WelKht of
Bearish Inflaences.
CHICAGO, Feb. 24. Everything In wheat
was bearish from the very start. Cables were
lower, receipts were improved, and the weath
er gave promise of sunshine for some time to
come. Crops were reported In excellent condi
tion. Estimates of grain receipts for tomor
row were treble what they were today. The
world's shipments were also very heavy. As a
result, liquidation was heavy and continuous.
The foreign demand was still very light, and
the demand from stock feeders was becoming
lighter because of the good weather. May
opened "4c lower, at 77c to 77c, and
dropped to 76c Covering on the break stead
ied things for a while, and when a decrease
in the visible supply of 1.021,000 bushels was
posted the market strengthened a bit. Jus;
before the close, however, the general feeltng
that wheat was too plentiful swept over the
floor, and, with hardly a struggle. May dropped
another cent, to 75c. May closed very weak,
l;4c lower, at 75H075c
Com again suffered from Increased country
offerings and a decreased demand from West
ern feeders. Cables were lower, the South
western markets were very weak, 'and fair
weather was universal in the country most
needing It. May started about c down, at
GOiic, In company with wheat, and hardly
paused until It had struck 59039Uc Tho
weakening of Ihe holding sentiment on the
part of the farmers was reflected In the pit
with a higher Intensity, and liquidation of
speculative holding went on at an enormous
