There was an attempt on the part of an eiemenc of professional op-e-rati.-s ti awaken some speculative interest In the market this morning, but the general dlsj)OfItion was to acquiesce in dullness and neglect, after Yesterday's disapiwlntlng cx; tat:jn of a decision In the Northprn Secutjties case It I the general opinion in the finan cial distrlst that any pronounced activity must await the delaye-d decision In this case, or some ctrlknyi new development in general conditions. The professional e-lement. which attempted to contest this obvious tendency this morning, was making v.ery moderate progress when the announcement came of engagements of gold for export Thursday to the amount of 53,750,- i FINANCIAL NEWS 000. The market then immediately flattened out. the greater art of the gains being lost, and was neglected and lethargic for the rest of the day. The day's small business was largely congested In Amalgamated Copper, Southern Pacific. Sugar and Metropolitan. The dealings otherwise, even In the great trans continental and Pacific railroads and In United States Steel were of quite insignificant propor tions. Amalgamated Copper was weak on the sharp break In the London copper market, and on the first reaction for copper In the local metal maiket since the market turned upward. The Mrength of Sugar was bused on the recent argument of a probable remission of sugar du ties from Cuba. The operations in Southern Pacific were largely in the hands of the specu lative pool In the stock. Metropolitan Street Railway recovered sharply from yesterday's depression, on the assurance from W. C. Whit ney that his coming retirement from business would not involve the liquidation of his hold ings. There were some wide movements among Ws prominent stocks. The engagement of gold for exjort has been only a slightly hardening In fluence on the money market, but the doubt as to the extent to which the movement may reach caued some uneasiness over the outlook. It Is believed that last week's large loan ex pansion represented the shifting of obligations due to foreign creditors to the local banks, and that the gold outgo Is In the payment of loans. The declaration of a 520 dividend on Standard Oil. the same as for the first quarter of last year and the j-ear before, was regarded as of some significance, as It was feared that the recent fail In the price of oil would lead to a reduction of the dividend. The market closed dull and heavy, the tone being somewhat ac centuated by the report of the rejection of peace overtures by the British Government, Business in bonds was quit" well distributed. The wool market hero pre sents few new features this week. The de mand Is moderate, while values are held on a very firm basis. Manufacturers are taking a fair amount of wool from time to time at full prices, but there is an absence of speculative feeling. Owing to the heavy sales of wool last Fall, together with the steady picking up of good lots, there Is considerable shrinkage ln the available supply of good territory wools, and a buyer now has a poorer choice from which to make his selections. Vnlues hold firm nt about 4345e. clean, being a fair basis for fine medium wools. The scoured basis for fine territory wools Is about 47(f?4Sc. while f-ome fancy lots are calling for 50c: medium territory wools are quoted at 3S-g40c, with choice lines at 42c London AV00I Auctions.
