THE MOANING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1901. 11 COMMERCIAL AND The principal movement among the Front street commission-houses yesterday -was the distribution of a considerable quantity of pro duce brought In on the California steamer ar riving Thursday evening. Among other Items of Interest In this department was the arrival of a small consignment of new potatoes. They were not very attractive In appearance, but the price was attractive, as they were held at Cc per pound. Eggs were very weak, and Fales of Oregon stock were generally made at 27',c. Becclpts are very heavy, and the demand Is only moderate. Poultry was not very plentiful, but not enough time has elapsed since ChrUt mas to create a demand of any consequence. The grain markets were steady, with very lit tle business reported. There Is nothing new In groceries, and the further decline which was expected In sugar has not yet materialized. Bank Clcnrlnfra. One or two small lots changed hands, but the most of the holder serin Imbued with the belief that higher prices will be obtainable later In tho heason. The foreign market woke up from Its protracted holiday without any wild disposition to follow the recent bulge In this country, and the best that futures could do was to close c hlghnr than on Tuesday. BnaincHH "Was Strong: and Active In Prominent Securities. NEW YORK. Dec 27. Today's stock market was strong and active throughout. The activity and strength, however, were mainly in a few prominent stocks In fact, there was active realizing all day, and when belated borrowers on call found the money rate rising sharply over their demand, the movement to realize be came general. The top level of prices was considerably reduced, and as a consequence the market showed no disposition to rally, closing dull and steady at the reaction. The highly speculative Industrials were the conspicuous features of the market all day, with Sugar still in the forefront, but with a consid- FINANCIAL NEWS erable revlva' of speculation In Amalgamated Copper. Sugar wavered In the early market, after opening a fraction higher, and touched 111 before the support in the stock became effective. It was lifted to 117. and closed at 115. a net gain of 34 on the day and a net I033 of since Saturday. The week's cam paign In the stock by the bears waa thus pret ty conclusively demonstrated to be a failure. The price of refined sugar was advanced by all of the companies today, and there were confident predictions that the duties on crudo EUgar would be reduced. Similarly hopeful views were expressed regarding the copper In dustry, and Amalgamated Copper, with the dividend off, advanced to 71, and closed a point lower, which Is equal to a net gain of 2. The speculation also continued active In Manhattan, and that stock rose an extreme 2 points, hut shows a net gain of only &. In the railroad list the principal activity continued to center In 'he coalers and in the transcon tinental group. There were indications of proflt-taking In some of the coalers, the Read ings being the only one of the group to make a gain. Atchison exhibited the greatest strength on the favorable showing of net earn ings for November. The annual report of Union Pacific caused some realizing In the stock, but It rallied well. The buying In the general list seemed to come from large In terests, and orders were executed by Individual brokers in large amounts. There was some evidence of investment demand among hlgh crade stocks. The bond market was active and strong. To tal sales, par value. $3,500,000.
