The expla nation agreed upon was that the nego- f tiatlons were on foot to secure large hold ings at private agreement, and that the bidding up of the stock represents efforts j to puc the prices to prohibitive figures on the part of insiders who oppose a change of control. That policy was suc cessfully pursued some time since In the case of Delaware .& Hudson, and that stock showed some sympathy today with the Lackawanna' movement. The coalers otherwise were rather quiet. The strength of the Wabash and Mis souri Pacific and Southwesterns general ly was related to the Xackawanna move ment, as the supposed efforts to control the latter are in the interest of that group. There was some large buying, both of "Union Pacific and Southern Pa cific, accompanied by rumors that a fur ther large holding of Southern Pacific had been secured, and would be applied as collateral for the Union Pacific con vertible bond issue, in addition to securi ties formerly .held. The strength of A.tch ison, which sold on the dividend, was attributed to the April showing, or net earnings. The Tobacco stocks fell some what to the background later In the day, but they were active and continued to dlan Pacific. 105J4; "Union Pacific preferred, 50; Northern Pacific preferred, K&; Grand Trunk, 11; Anaconda, 9. Trade in the corn pit was confined al most exclusively to the local accounts. A covering movement was induced by the marked Improvement in the cash demand and by the wheat strength. July closed firm, He higher, at 44c. The oats market showed more life than did either wheat or corn and ruled firm on a good demand. July closed steady and unchanged at 2828c. GUILTY OF COUNTERFEITING German Paper Printed, a Picture of -abutted States Ten Dollar Bill. CHICAGO.. May 2S. American currency laws"have been violated by a German newspaper and should Its editor appear in, Chicago 'he would "be promptly arrested by.Captdln Thomas I. Porter, of the United States Secret Service. The specific charge is the, making of a- half-tone plc ture of a 510 bill. One of the pictures cut from a copy of the Berliner Tageblatt was confiscated by Captain Porter yes- terday-t It was turned over to him by a reporter. t The circumstances leading up to his ac tion were unusual. They had their origin In the publication several weeks ago of an interview with Director of the Mint Roberts. This Interview was copied by the Berlin newspaper, which In an edition Illustrated the article by a half-tone pic ture of a 510 bill. The reproduction was so perfect that when cut from the news paper and held up with only the plofured side showing It wejuld deceive many. It might be even passed as currency on re cently arrived emigrants or ignorant for eigners, say the Government officers. A. copy of that issue of the Berliner Tageblatt was purchased from a-local agency dealing In periodicals. "I'll take charge of that," said Captain Porter, when he was shown the picture. "Every counterfeit bill Is wanted at Wash ington. If there are any more copies of that paper to be found in Chicago I will confiscate them. Any one who circulates the coplesMs committing a felony, though unknowingly. It would not be well to let It be generally known what good repro ductions of money certificates can be made by half-tone uhotography. Of course, so long'as the Berlin editor stays out of the United States he Is Immune from punishment, but if he comes within the jurisdiction of Federal courts it would be "my duty to arrest hlnu" AT THE HOTELS. This man, who at one time became Sergeant of my troop, told me that he spent his life hurrying from one fight to another, and when there was no fighting worth the name going on In the pacific world, he was In the habit of taking a little house In Wales, wherein the read ing of Welsh history and the drinking of sparkling burgundy constituted his fa vorite pastimes. I frequently had dis cussions with him on some abstruse his torical point, and I became more and more astonished at the appalling pro fundity of the man's erudition. One day I remarked that Wales had not yet found her historian, and my Sergeant replied: "No; and there are only three men alive capable of writing- It." "1 think I know two of them," I answered. "One Is my old tutor, O. M. Edwards, of Lincoln Col lege. Oxford, and another Is Professor Rhys." "You are perfectly right," re plied my Sergeant: "and the third Is my self." Philadelphia North American, Senator Quay, having got all he wants, or at least all he thinks he can get away with, announces that his "connection with the serious labors and responsibili ties of active politics" ceased when he took his seat In the Senate last January, and he gives this pledge to the people of Pennsylvania: "I will never again be a candidate for nor accept any official position." When Mr. Quay fulfills his promise to order his Legislature to pass a good bal lot reform bill It will be time enough to consider gravely whether or not he has any Intention of keeping this latest pledge.
